What is APNIC?
• Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for theAsia Pacific region– One of five RIRs currently operating around
the world– Non-profit, membership organisation– Responsible for distributing Internet resources
throughout the AP region

• Goal for 2008: Full support for IPv6– Mostly done or well underway by now
• Resource services– Improve support for IPv6 requests and request
management– DNS (ip6.arpa) management
• Online services and connectivity– DNS servers, websites, MyAPNIC etc– Dual stacks– Better IPv6 connectivity
• Communications– Training, Information, ‘Promotion’…

IPv6 Program• This position is established in the Communications Area to
coordinate APNIC communications activities relating toIPv6:
– Conduct research to identify national regulatory or policy frameworkmodels that most effectively facilitate the transition from IPv4 to IPv6.
– Field research to identify commonly asked technical and businessmanagement questions faced by ISPs who are deploying IPv6 andestablish best current practices.
– Develop reports and materials to disseminate to various audiences(regulatory and policy, ISP business managers, ISP technical managersand network engineers).
– Conduct research to determine best current practices related to usage ofvarious transition mechanisms.
– Collect statistics of IPv6 deployment.

• 1 January 2007– 2-byte AS numbers continue to be assigned– 4-byte AS numbers assigned if requested
• 1 January 2009– 4-byte AS numbers assigned– 2-byte AS numbers assigned if requested
• 1 January 2010– Distinction between 2 and 4-byte AS numbers
ceased– AS assignments from undifferentiated 4-byte
