PORTS OF CALL
Sydney, Australia: First came the Aborigines, 50,000 years ago; then 759 British convicts, followed by a wave of military settlers known as the Rum Corps. The result: Sydney's bold, egalitarian charm. History, opera, opals and koalas are all here.
Nouméa, New-Caledonia: This country's capital covers a peninsula on the largest island, the cigar-shaped Grand Terre. Thanks to the happenstance of history and geography, Nouméa is a mix of France and tropical beaches.
Easo, Lifou, New-Caledonia: The island is an ancient makatea - a fossilized coral atoll raised high above sea level. Whalers were the first Westerners to visit this Melanesian paradise - though greedy traders lured by the island's aromatic sandalwood trees soon followed. Today's visitors are drawn to the island's spectacular scenery, which ranges from dense tropical forest to dramatic cliffs.
Port Vila, Vanuatu: Explore the capital city of Vanuatu and enter the magical and mysterious world of ancient Melanesia at Ekasup Cultural Village or visit The Secret Gardens in Mele - showcasing Vanuatu's magnificent flora.
Dravuni Island, Fiji: Known for its pristine beaches and fine weather, Dravuni Island is a veritable tropical paradise.
Do not hesitate to grab a snorkel and head for the pristine beaches, or walk into the charming villages and meet the locals.
Lautoka, Fiji: Welcome to paradise - white sand, clear turquoise waters and 50 luxuriant acres of orchids at the late Raymond Burr's Garden of the Sleeping Giant.
Kuto, Ile des Pins: Named by Captain James Cook in 1774, archaeological excavations on the island have revealed settlements dating back 4000 years. While there, explore the limestone cave known as Devil’s Grotto or just marvel at the island’s unspoiled beauty.
Melbourne, Australia: A genteel city of Victorian buildings, verdant parks and a vibrant multicultural heart full of galleries, restaurants, fashionable boutiques. Melbourne has been named the planet's most livable city.
Hobart, Australia: The capital of Tasmania, Hobart is dominated by the breathtaking Mount Wellington. You may want to stroll the harbour side docks to browse artist studios, visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. Nearby, you can sample the famous wines of Coal River Valley or view the magnificent cliffs of Port Arthur.
Milford Sound, New Zealand: Nothing can prepare you for the majesty of Milford Sound, star of Fiordland National Park. New vistas mesmerize at each turn - towering Mitre Peak, plunging waterfalls, bottlenose and dusky dolphins, fur seals and Fiordland crested penguins.
Port Chalmers (Dunedin), New Zealand: The very word “Dunedin” comes from the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, Dùn Èideann. Similarities to Scotland’s capital do not end there, though the two cities are as geographically distant from one another as they can be.
Akaroa (Christchurch), New Zealand: Akaroa is a historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. Feel free to explore the village and enjoy colonial architecture, art galleries, shopping and cafés.
Picton, New-Zealand: Set in the upper reaches of Queen Charlotte Sound, Picton is a gateway to the largest grape-growing and wine-producing region of New Zealand.
Wellington, New Zealand: New Zealand's friendly capital city features gaily painted old wooden houses and a red cable car that takes you up to the Wellington Botanic Gardens and a fine view of the harbour. A must-see is the engaging Te Papa Tongarewa Museum.
Napier, New Zealand: A city of vision, rebuilt in the striking, clean style of art deco after a devastating earthquake in 1931 and reinvented as a centre for gourmet food and wines. Take in all this marvelous city has to offer.
Tauranga (Rotorua), New Zealand: Site of fierce Maori wars, Tauranga today is a peaceful city in the heart of kiwifruit-growing country. Farther afield: Rotorua, with its spouting geysers and bubbling mud pools, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and nocturnal kiwi houses.
Auckland, New Zealand: This is one of the loveliest cities in the world, and according to many surveys, one of its most livable. Many of the old volcanoes that formed the terrain of the beautiful area are now grassy, hilly parks. Climb Mount Eden, North Head, or One Tree Hill and look toward the water. You will see why it is called the City of Sails!
