Chapter Meeting

April 25 and 26, 2008 Victoria, B.C.

Bob Tangney, Chair The chapter held its annual meeting April 26-27, 2008 in Victoria, British Columbia at the University of Victoria. There were three presentations on Sheet Music Collections in the Northwest: Terry Horner spoke of the British Columbia Sheet Music Project, its progress, use, and completion. Bob Tangney presented an overview and update on the KOMO Sheet Music Collection at the Seattle Public Library, a collection of over 26,000 pieces of piano/vocal sheet music and band arrangements of popular songs from the 1920s-1950s. And Rebecca Belford and Leslie Bennett gave a presentation on the University of Oregon Historic Sheet Music collection and described the process of getting the material digitally available. The collection includes the Oregon Music Collection and the Women Composers Collection. Also, Susan Lewis Hammond, a music professor at the University of Victoria, gave an interesting presentation entitled “Toward a Bibliography of Italian Secular Song, 1490-1640,” which spoke on the process of creating a bibliography and the multitude of options the bibliographer must decide upon. We then were led on a fun tour of the University of Victoriaʼs new music library by its music librarian Bill Blair. We finished the day with a lovely dinner at Swanʼs Bistro…and a few of us lingered after in the bar! What?!

NEWS FROM THE MEMBERSHIP

Bob Tangney

With John Brower's departure (he moved to Houston, became a branch manager at Houston Public and, most importantly, got married to Mary Du Mont, a Rice University music librarian!), his full-time music librarian position opened up at Seattle Public and I was fortunate enough to get the job! Though I've been at Seattle Public since 1998, it has always been on a part-time basis but as of September I've been full-time and loving it! On a music-related (but not library-related) note, my wife, Deeji Killian, and I direct the Sparkling Choir of Love and we will be touring Europe with about half of our group this coming May. If you happen to be in Tuscany or Provence at that time please come and see us!

Judy Tsou

I have been invited to join the editorial board of Journal of the Society of American Music; I will also continue to serve on the board of the Journal of American Musicological Society. I am also a contributing editor for the second edition of the New Grove Dictionary of American Music, where articles in my area have now been commissioned. I hope to see the first articles appear in the online Grove (Oxford Music Online) by the end of 2009.

Kirsten Walsh

I was able to combine the MLA meeting in Newport last February with a quick visit to Halifax, where my older daughter now lives and plays with Symphony Nova Scotia. Terry and I had a busy spring preparing to host our CAML (Canadian Association of Music Libraries) colleagues here during the 2008 Congress of the Humanities, which brought an estimated 8,000 people to UBC in early June. Iʼve become the Vice-President/President-Elect

of CAML, and am looking forward to being more actively involved with CAML for a while. This summer I was fortunate to go on an amazing voyage in the Norwegian Arctic, aboard an ice-rated Russian research ship leased by a US adventure travel company. Along with my sister and brother-in-law, who was trip leader, we boarded the ship in Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen Island, and spent 11 days circumnavigating the Svalbard archipelago. Every day brought new adventures as we zodiaced amongst icebergs and landed at points of interest to explore the flora and fauna. Highlights included polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes, walrus, huge seabird colonies nesting on cliffs, and exquisite miniature wildflowers. We got up to 80ʼ 33” north before the fast ice stopped us, and saw the solar eclipse from that vantage point. Back to work reality…it has been a busy fall term (arenʼt they all?). I was pleased to be able to revive a student concert series which is hosted by the Library. The concerts take place in the Dodson Room of the Barber Learning Centre roughly once a month.

Terry Horner Library assistant, Dana Harrison joined the UBC Music Library staff this summer, replacing Thom Geise who worked at UBC for about 35 years. Dana is a real asset to the library and is quick to find errors in cuttering we have made in the past! Dana is one of two copy cataloguers and is also assisting with reference. In the spring, she will be trained in ordering. As Kirsten mentioned, it has been a very busy fall. Training Dana, I have found we really need to have a good training manual which is under development, We are undergoing a database clean-up at this very moment, a very welcome and much-needed job. We look forward to getting all those additional cross-references in our catalogue, but donʼt look forward to a potentially large manual clean-up. CAML met with CUMS once again this year in Vancouver at the 2008 Congress which was extremely successful and a chance to show off

our second phase of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. From day one, it is difficult to find a seat in this welcoming and warm addition to the library system. My penchant for weekends away took me to Vancouver Island a few times, Cortes Island and Portland this fall. Two trips to Cortes resulted in finding many pounds of chanterelle mushrooms. A southern winter vacation would be welcome, but it looks like I will be looking after local relatives instead. My goal is to make 1,000 chocolates over the holiday, beating last yearʼs count of 783. I will be in Chicago for MLA, so will count that as my ʻwinterʼ vacation! I am in the process of applying for digitization grant to expand my sheet music collection and redesign the present web site. I will feature BC composers of sheet music which would include works not necessarily about BC. I did receive monies for digitization from our Music Library sale fund, a very welcome gift indeed. Hope to see some of you at MLA this year.

New Librarian at the University of Washington

Verletta kern Verletta Kern joined the Music Library at the University of Washington as Music Research Services Librarian on September 1, 2008. Verletta came to UW from the University of Redlands where she was the Electronic Services Librarian for four years. Her duties there also included music liaison. Verletta received her B.A. in Music from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and received an M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, where she also interned at the Music Library. She also received a M.M. degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of Redlands. At UW, she will be in charge of selecting sound and video recordings, answering reference inquiries and library information instruction. She will also be in charge of gifts and preservation of our collection. You will all be able to meet Verletta at our next chapter meeting.

NEWSLETTER EDITOR MESSAGE Hello everyone! Thanks again for the submissions this year. As our numbers dwindle, so does the size of our newsletter! I look forward to our meeting next year in Seattle. Hopefully we can inspire more to join our small but quaint chapter.
