Not confirming all buried utilities before excavating can lead to negative outcomes including service disruptions, fines, or even death. Protection against potential damage to underground infrastructure during drilling or excavation activities.

Utility damage can lead to accidents and disruptions that can run into millions of dollars.

Benefits of using Subsurface Utility Locating Purdue University published a report titled:

Cost Savings on Highway Projects Utilizing Subsurface Utility Engineering.

The Purdue researchers studied 71 projects in North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, and Virginia. The projects involved a mix of interstate, arterial, and collector roads in urban, suburban, and rural settings.

Two broad categories of savings emerged -- quantifiable and qualitative savings. The Purdue study quantified a total of $4.62 in avoided costs for every $1.00 spent on SUE.

The greatest savings came from avoiding utility relocations and reducing delay claims.

Electro Magnetic Utility LocatingThe RD4000 & RD8000 10 watt Transmitter and Electro-Magnetic Receiver is used to locate and confirm all conductive utilities such as: water lines, electrical lines, natural gas lines, telecommunication lines (cable tv, telephone, fiber-optic with trace wire), veeder-root lines and sign & area light electrical lines.

Electro Magnetic equipment is also used to send a frequency signal using a transmitter to put a signal PCL’s traceable rodders so that we can pinpoint the depth and direction of non conductive drain lines, sewer lines, water lines, and electrical & telecommunication ducts.

Ground Penetrating RadarThe GSSI Utility Scan Ground Penetrating Radar unit with 400 Hz antenna is used to locate and confirm conductive utilities, and to locate non-conductive utilities and unknown anomalies. Excellent for locating shallow sewer & drain lines and fiberglass piping such as product lines, vent lines, and fuel lines.

This equipment can an also locate and confirm Underground Storage Tanks, buried well heads, and irrigation lines as well as detect non-conductive fire water lines if they are not buried too deep.

Magnetometer Well LocatingThe Schonstedt GA-52Cx Magnetic Locator detects underground iron and steel objects such as buried metallic pipeline, metal anomalies, conductive utilities, Underground Storage Tanks, buried oil wells and buried metal monitoring well lids.

GIS & AutoCad (Mapping)Advantages of mapping subsurface utilities include:

The Digital gathering of Geophysical Data allows for integration with other historical, graphical, or analytical data. A high quality, large format printable figure can include utility depth and direction as well as other specified information gathered in the field.

Collected Geophysical Data is also made available as GPS Points and ArcGIS Shapefiles, as well as AutoCAD and Google compatible formats. A secure online package features interactive in-field viewing and updating/editing of utility attributes.

Ground Penetrating Radar (Concrete Scanning)Concrete ground penetrating radar scanning provides the ideal technique for concrete evaluation because it has the highest resolution of any subsurface imaging non-invasive method. It is also much safer than other methods, such as x-ray technology.

By using ground penetrating radar equipment you can accurately locate and/or delineate rebar, tension cables, grade beams, conduits, voids and slab thickness.

Electromagnetic InductionUsing Electromagnetic Induction locating equipment conductive utilities are located by inducing a radio frequency (RF) signal from a transmitter directly (direct connect) onto a conductive utility. The dedicated radio frequency signal is then picked up by a hand held radio frequency (RF) receiver to locate the depth & direction of the conductive utilities. These include: copper, metal, galvanized, and steel water lines, gas lines, petroleum lines & product lines. Electromagnetic Induction locating equipment can also be used to locate the depth & direction of energized utilities such as electrical lines, tele-communication lines, and fiber optic lines by inducing a radio frequency (RF) from the transmitter using a inductive clamp method.

Truck Mounted CCTVA CCTV video pipe inspection is performed using a remotely operated robotic camera crawler that is launched from our CCTV camera truck directly into the pipe. Our video pipeline inspections are able to identify cracks, breaks, sags, and offset fittings in sewer lines, water lines, electrical ducts, and storm drain pipes. Digital media of the inspection, and a generated written report is provided to the customer on the spot. We can inspect lines from 6”inches to 10’ feet in diameter.

Video Pipe InspectionsUsing CCTV video pipe inspection equipment is a cost effective way to confirm the condition and location of sewer lines, storm drain pipes and conduits. Knowing where Sewer line damage is used to be a matter of educated guesswork. We can not only video the integrity of the pipe, we can video record the inspection and locate the depth, size and direction of all sewer laterals, storm drain pipes, electrical and telecommunication conduits.

Additional Services

Vacuum ExcavationVacuum Excavation (potholing) is a service Pacific Coast Locators, Inc. provides when the horizontal & vertical location of existing utilities or structures needs to be positively identified. This service is most commonly used when a contractor is going to be trenching or excavating and needs to make sure that there are no potential conflicts with underground utilities & structures before excavating. Seeing is believing! Saving lives, time, and money.

Electronic Leak DetectionWhen a pressurized water pipe develops a leak the water flows from the leak into the surrounding soil at high speed which causes the pipe material to vibrate at the exit point. The vibration or high pitch sound is transmitted by the pipe. This high pitched noise called structure borne can be heard using electronic leak detection equipment, such as sensitive microphone and ultrasound technology which can pinpoint the exact location of a high pressure water leak.

CCTV Down Hole Monitoring VideoThe CCTV Video Camera is lowered in the well and can determine the condition or damage of the well casing. Using CCTV Video camera technology we can also determine whether the screen intervals are damaged or blocked. A recording will be provided to the client on site.

EquipmentGround Penetrating Radar (GPR)

This equipment gives us the ability to collect and process the depth, direction and diameter of conductive and non-conductive underground utilities so that we can deliver accurate information to our clients.

RD4000Designed for rapid and precise locating, the RD4000 10 watt transmitter and receiver is used to confirm the location of buried conductive utilities. This is accomplished by the induction of radio frequencies on the target line - power, gas, water, telecommunication, and all other conductive utilities.

RD8000The RD8000 10 watt transmitter and receiver locates buried conductive utilities including power, gas, water, telecommunication, and other conductive utilities. It also has bluetooth capabilities for GPS mapping of all located utilities on-site.

PCM PlusThe PCM Plus Pipeline Current Mapper 150 watt transmitter and receiver is used to locate and identify the position and depth of pipeline over long distances. It is able to locate from one connection for up to 19 miles. It is also used for cable fault locating and for locating cathodic protection lines.

Truck Mounted CCTV Crawler CameraThe all-in-one production camera truck unit can complete CCTV video inspections of sewer and storm drain mains and laterals as well as inspect the joint sealing of main lines and laterals.

Vacuum Excavation TruckVacuum Excavation technologies utilize high velocity air to expand and break up soil. The soil and rock is then removed from the hole using a powerful vacuum which insures the safe removal of soils around buried utilities.

Safety

Our goal is to send each of our employees home safely every day. Our daily process usually includes a safety tailgate meeting before completing our subsurface utility investigation. A strong safety culture also depends

on a competent workforce which is why we reinforce safety regularly. We are involved with the contractors we work with including Chevron and Shell and attend yearly events such as global safety days which help to help strengthen our safety culture. Our commitment to goal zero is a firm one, and we are proud of our safety awards.
