Danksy puik speurwerk van die polisie is twee ver-meende diewe aangekeer en gesteelde items van Orle-ansvale Primêr in ’n japtrap teruggevind.

Die gort was behoorlik gaar nadat Orleansvale PrimêrSaterdagnag deurgeloop het onder diewe.

Die skoolhoof, Elmo Cairncross, is deur hul sekerheids-maatskappy gebel wat hom in kennis gestel het dat by dieskool ingebreek is.

“Ek was in Mosselbaai toe ek die tyding kry. Ons beheer-raadsvoorsitter het verdere inspeksie gedoen.

“Met sy aankoms by Orleansvale was die stoorkamer sedak en plafon oopgebreek. Die boewe het daarin geslaag omdie alarmstelsel te ontkoppel. Papiere het oral rondgelê soosdie boewe baljaar het. Hulle het ook die sekerheidshek uitsy staalkosyn gebreek om toegang tot die finansiële beamptese kantoor te verkry.”

Volgens Cairncross het die diewe ’n staal-liasseerkabinetoopgebreek en ’n onbekende hoeveelheid kontant gesteel.Skryfbehoeftes, rekenaars, koper, kruideniersware en ge-reedskap is ook alles weggedra.

“Die boewe het toe ’n klaskamer se staal-diefwering afge-haal en verskeie persoonlike items van onderwysers ge-steel.

“Dit is skokkend dat ons gemeenskap in Chicago gesteeldegoedere van die diewe kan koop. Hulle kinders maak ookgebruik van die skool as leersentrum en hulle breek dieskool af.”

Maar danksy ouers van Rietbok-woonstelle, wat inligtingoor die vermeende diewe bekend gemaak het, het twee flinkespeurders van Paarl-Oos-polisie, ao. Anthony Sauls enkonst. Grant Williams, verskeie items teruggevind.

Cairncross het die gemeenskap van Chicago gevra omhande te vat en eienaarskap van die skool te neem om so-doende sulke diefstalle te fnuik. “Ons skool, wat nie skool-geld hef nie, word finansieel swaar getref deur inbrake, watbeteken onvoorsiene uitgawes vir herstelwerk styg. Hierdiegelde kan eerder aan leermateriaal, ensovoorts, spandeerword.”

Paarl-Oos-polisie wil ook die publiek waarsku om nie ge-steelde goedere te koop nie.

Persone wat in die besit van gesteelde goedere betrapword, sal in hegtenis geneem word.

Die verdagtes het Woensdag 25 Februarie in die Paarl-landdroshof verskyn op aanklagte van huisbraak en dief-stal.* Thousands of rands worth of damage was caused to Or-

Paarl helicopterman’swings clippedA man from Paarl appeared inthe Belville CommercialCrimes Court on Friday on acharge of fraud to the value ofmillions of rands through theirregular sale of helicopters.

Barend “Barry” Oberholzer(31),wholivesontheluxuryValde Vie estate outside Paarl, fa-ces two charges of fraud, one ofcontravention of the Compa-nies Act, one of contraventionof the Financial Advisory andIntermediary Services Act anda related violation of the Pre-vention of Organised CrimeAct.

Oberholzer made the headlines in 2013 when, accordingto Die Burger, he acknowledged that in 2008 he headed afrontcompanywhosuppliedAmericanmanufacturedhel-icopters and spare parts to Iraq.

According to reports, he was not prosecuted after hereached an agreement with the FBI to provide them withinformation..

In the case at the Belville Commercial Crimes Court,thestateclaims inAugust2010Oberholzersealedanagree-ment with a couple to sell them a helicopter through hiscompany, 360 Aviation (Pty) Ltd. At that time there wereapparently three civil actions against Oberholzer in con-nection with outstanding payments totaling R246 991.

It was agreed in the sale contract that Oberholzer wouldsell the couple a 2008 Robinson 44 Raven 2 helicopter atthe cost of R3,1 million.

The couple paid the amount, but instead of receivinga Raven 2, as agreed upon, Oberhozer handed them a 2007Raven 1 helicopter. The helicopter also had 400 flyinghours on the clock, opposed to the 17 flying hours that theoriginal helicopter was suppose to have had.

Oberholzer then agreed that he would refund the coupleoncehesoldthesecondhelicopter,buttheywereapparent-ly never reimbursed.

The state argues that Oberholzer paid these monies intoa trustaccount tomaintainhis lavish lifestyle.Thesecondfraud charge relates to a deposit for a helicopter that Ober-holzer apparently had not paid back.

The case was postponed until 23 March.

le na die plaas Fraaigelegen op die R301 nabyBoschenmeer haas toe ’n brand tussen bosse,naby die pad, uitgebreek het.Geen strukture of lewens is bedreig nie, en

dit is nie seker hoe die brande ontstaan hetnie.Inwoners vanMaylaan,VanWyksvlei,was

egter nie so gelukkig nie toe ’n brandVrydag-middag 18 informele strukture in die nood-kamp verwoes het. Altesaam 100 mense isweens die brand dakloos gelaat maar nie-mand is beseer nie.DiemunisipalebestuurdervandieDraken-

Arboretum still not a safe place to beLISE BEYERS

Young criminals are still targeting leisureseekers in the Paarl Arboretum.This is evident after a family was attacked

in the tree park on the embankment of theBerg River.On Saturday the couple took their dog for

a walk in the Arboretum. They walkedthrough the railway tunnel and just a littlefurther, when they encountered a group of10 to 15 young men.“We turned around as it did not look safe.

They then started chasing us and about fiveof thembrokeawayfromthebiggroup, tryingto cut us off on the side path.“They were shouting to each other to run.

We ran and managed to get through the tun-nel where they stopped chasing us.“The public needs to know how unsafe the

Arboretum is. No security was in sight.”This tree park, which is very popular

amongstnature lovers,has throughtheyearsbecome a haven for criminals. Many peoplehave been attacked and robbed there, somesustaining severe injuries.And although the municipality has prom-

ised to improvesecurity, attacksonmembersof the public continue to occur.Municipal Manager Johann Mettler was

distressed to hear about the narrow escapethe visitors to the Arboretum had.“We do our best, with very limited resour-

ces, to make our public open spaces as safeas possible for the enjoyment of all the resi-dents of Drakenstein. The entrance to theAr-

boretum is uncontrolled and access controlis unhindered.This aspectmaybe somethingto consider in an effort to increase the safetyof users in the future.“The Mayor has already requested an in-

vestigation into the financial viability andimplications of a security camera(s) and/orother measures of security in the Arbore-tum.”Mettler added that thepublic shouldbevig-

ilant when entering the area.“The size of the park makes it difficult to

patrol onaneffectiveandefficient basis.Dur-ing weekends, there are two security guardspatrolling the area on bicycles. Municipallawenforcementand theSAPSalsopatrol thearea during the week, albeit intermittently.At every entrance there is a notice boardwhichindicatestheemergencynumberof thesecurity company.”In case of emergency the public can also

call the 24-hour number 086 144 4492 or theSAPS on 10111.“The Arboretum is a wonderful public

spacewhich is enjoyed by our entire commu-nity.Wewill dowhat is reasonablynecessaryto make the experience an enjoyable one.”

The Paarl Arboretum is very popularamongst nature lovers, but has now be-come a haven for criminals.

Threeyears after theDrakensteinMunicipalitypurchased the Ikhwezi Community Centre (for-merly Vlakkeland manor house) in MbekweniforR550000aftertheIkhweziTrustwasliquidat-ed, the property still stands dilapidated.Themunicipality bought the community cen-

trewith the purpose of establishing a skills cen-treforthegreaterDrakensteincommunity. Mu-nicipalmanager, JohannMettler, said the liqui-dation and transfer of the assets of Ikhwei wasa lengthy process.In the interim, the municipality has adver-

tised forqualifiedorganisationsorEFTcollegesto submit proposals for the management of thecentre.“The purpose of the centre is to train unem-

ployed and skilled persons with skills requiredby employers in the area, and so to encouragelocal job creation. The trainingwill focus on ac-creditedSETAcourseswitha focuson technicaltrading skills, construction, culinary arts, andeducation and training.”Initially, about 50 students peryearwill be ac-

commodated. Prospective students can choosebetween courses in lathe operation, welding,agro-economics construction, plumbing, chefcourses, thehospitality industry and child care.In July 2014, the council appointed a service

provider which will manage the centre. They

havealsoupgradedtheinfrastructureof thecen-tre and fenced the premises with electric fen-cing.The municipality is currently working on

plans to develop the centre.“This is a step towards our strategic objective

to invest in individuals and in organizationsacross our communities so that we can begin tostrengthen the economic foundation of our soci-ety and stimulate economic empowerment.“It is a very exciting development that could

have a big impact on our society.”Mettler could, however, not give any indica-

tionwhenIkhweziwillonceagainbeupandrun-ning.

Circle confusion formotorists inPaarlThe paint on the new ar-rows at the two major traf-fic circles in Paarl wasbarely dry,when socialme-dia sites where floodedwith comments on this newdevelopment.

The Drakenstein Munici-pality had recently informedthe public of the new rules atthe traffic circles. Thenewar-rows in the roadwere paintedon Monday and Tuesday.On TuesdayPaarl Post had

already received several com-plaints about the arrows frommembers of the public whoare concerned that the newrules will confuse motoristseven more.Some local driving schools

were not even aware of the changes that wereimplemented by the municipality.According to a driving school instructor

who wishes to remain anonymous, someonetold her about the changes, but she said that

she had not even noticed the advertisementin the newspaper.Sheadded that for a learnerdriver it is very

confusing, as the rules now differed fromthose that were still enforced last week.

“I feel the municipality shouldplace a prominent advertisement sothat no one can miss it. People needto be made aware of the changes. Ithink it is going to end up in a bigmess.”According to the advertisement

the Drakenstein Municipality re-cently re-evaluated the MarketStreet/Berg River Boulevard andLangenhoven/Jan van Riebeeckcircles in order to provide thesmoothest and safest traffic move-ments.It states that the changes are due

of young men tried to attack them.There have been far too many attacks on visitors to the Arboretum,

deterring many people from visiting this famous park. Unfortunately,themore people stay away, the greater the possibility of theArboretumfalling into a state of disrepair and becoming a haven for criminals.Thismust not be allowed to happen. Paarl is one of the very few towns

in South Africa that has a spectacular river – the Berg River – runningthrough it, with a magnificent tree park on its embankment.The tree park, which extends 2,8 kmalong the river, has been planted

with indigenous trees from six continents. Altogether 4 500 trees, repre-senting 750 species from across the world, were planted here.Slowly but surely, however, this scenic spot is falling into disrepute

due to crime. Unfortunately the local authorities just do not have theresources to provide 24/7 security or to fence in the area.How can the future of the Arboretum be assured? Perhaps all con-

cerned parties should meet and discuss ways of increasing the numberof visitors to the park. Small enterprises should be encouraged to oper-ate in the park such as coffee shops, children’s entertainment, weekendmarkets, organised dogwalks, yoga classes, etc. Increasing the numberof visitors is one way of stopping criminals in their tracks.

motorcarandmotorcycleracingontheN1highway(inboththeWorces-ter and Cape Town directions).This problemwas conveyed over

the last 18months to the various fo-rums available to us.However, we are told about the

many reasons why we cannot behelped, i.e. limited resources ormanpower, or that it is not this per-son’s or that department’s job tohelp us, as well as pure reluctance.Meanwhile, the racing has esca-

lated to unbearable frequency andnoise levels.The members of these racing

gangsenjoyrevvingup theircaren-ginesbeforetheracestartsandthenthey flydown thehighway towherethe race ends at the tollgate. Thenthey drive across the highway toCapeTown-bound lane and fly backto the starting line.During the return drive they en-

joy an informal race back at thestarting line, where they cross thehighway lanes and the grassed cen-tre strip to get ready for the nextrace.Now they have to keep the en-

ginesrevvinguntil it istheirchanceto raceagain.The incentives for thedrivers are big money prizes andthecheeringcrowds that throngtheroadbridgesspanningthehighway.These races occur between 23:00

and 03:00 and may last up to threehours at a time.While the racing cars tear down

the highway in either direction, ev-erydayroadusersarealsousingthehighway,andtheirlivesareatariskif theyhappen to be on the highwayduring these races.We, as residents on either side of

theN1highwayaretired,angryandconfused.No-oneispreparedtohelpus. We are citizens of this country,law-abidingcitizensandwepayourtaxes.The starting line of these races is

in front of De Oude Renbaan, a re-tirementvillage for the elderly.Theinfirmary, caring for the sick, re-tiredcitizens, facestheN1highway.Who is going to help them?Whatabout thechildren that can-

not sleep at night?One resident stated the problem

onFacebook and the replywas thatthey only race when it is quiet ...We were advised to start a peti-

tion; the only constructive advicegiven to us.How is it possible that no-one can

helpusanddosomethingabout thisproblem?These races are illegal. The driv-

ers are acting in a reckless anddefi-ant manner and their actions areputting many peoples’ lives in dan-ger. They are acting illegally andbreaking the law.Why is this ongoing, criminal be-

However, certain residentsof theneighbourhoodare causingconflict with some individuals,me included, accusing us of doingthings that they have no evidenceof.This has become a daily issue

FINDING MEIRING: Huis Meiring won more than 12certificates in the first orientation week, hosted by the lo-cal Student Representative Council of CPUT WellingtonCampus. Newcomers from as far as Namibia, the Karooand Eastern Cape, have joined together to build a phe-nomenal group this year. Diversity in this residence playsa central role and they use it as fuel for their creative en-gines to keep the ideas flowing. OPKNAPPINGSWERK: Lede van die huiskomitee, asook studente-raadgewers van Huis Bliss (CPUT Wellington-kampus) het die afgelopetyd groot werk gedoen by Voor-Groenberg Primêr, ’n landelike skoolbuite Wellington. Hulle het onder meer die mure van die vooraansigvan die skool versier. Anina van der Westhuizen (opsigter) sê hoe lan-ger hulle daar werk, hoe meer plekke vind hulle wat dringend aandagnodig het, soos geute wat vervang moet word en die dak wat lek enskoongespuit moet word. Die studente het ’n noodkreet gerig aan kun-diges om hulle van raad te bedien ten opsigte van dié probleme en ookskenkings van boumateriaal vir die nodig herstelwerk gevra. Die Wellington ATKV-gesinstak onder leiding vanTharina Schweidler, fasiliteerder van die projek, hetbegin om intense entrepreneurskapsklasse by vierlandelike skole aan te bied.Die ATKV het vir die projek hande gevat met die

polisie, die plaaswerkersforum, AgriMark en diementors van elk van die skole.Die projek dek ’n formele kurrikulum waarin die

kinders verskeie aspekte van entrepreneurskap ge-leer word. Dit sluit in: hoe om produkte te identifi-seer, hoe om professioneel op te tree teenoor kliënte,hoe om te bemark en selfs hoe om hul eie logo’s teontwerp.Die mentors van elke skool is mense wat reeds op

’n plaas werk. Hulle sal die kinders raad gee met diekweek en versorging van saad, wat hiervoor deurAgriMark geskenk word.Die leerders se T-hemde is geskenk deurAgriMark

en die plaaslike ATKV-tak.

The sport of mountain biking has grownphenomenally and off-road cyclists are al-ways looking for something fresh to ride. On7March,Dirtopiawillbebringingyoua16 kmand 36 km from Perdeberg Winery that willbe held in conjunction with the Paarl Ommi-berg Festival in the region.

Dirtopia is a well-known event and trailmanagement company with more than 15years’ experience.

Start times: 08:30 for long distance and 08:45for short distance.

Registration is from 07:00 at the venue onevent day. Coffee from Cafe Pronto available.

Entry fees: Short distance R90 for tag hold-ers, R110 other pre-entries

Long route R110 for tag holders, R130 otherpre-entries.

Late entries taken on the morning will beR20 extra.

Route descriptions:*16 km: The route is easy, open riding, with

beautiful vistasof thewinelands.Mostlyopenfield and vineyard riding, with a short dis-tanceondistrict road.Onewaterpoint for thisroute.

*36 km: With the same start as the shortroute, followed by a few long, gradual climbs;you’ll ride to the most southern part of theroute with views over the Durbanville farmsandTableMountain. Twowater points on thelong route with the same riding as the shortroutebacktoPerdebergWinery. (Mostlyopenveld and vineyard riding, with a short dis-tance on district road).

There will be well-stocked water points onthe routes and medals for all finishers. Makesure you stay for the lucky draw, as all riderswill stand a chance towin aGiant Simple Sin-gle Bike and many more great prizes.

’n Astrobaan vir Hoërskool HugenoteHugenote Hoërskool staan al vir jare be-kend vir sy gebalanseerde benadering totdie ontwikkeling van leerders en om ge-leenthede vir hulle te skep. Hugenote pro-beer omhierdie ontwikkeling op ’n deurlo-pende basis te laat plaasvind, afhangendnatuurlik van die beskikbare geld.

Sommige van hierdie projekte is reedssigbaar byvoorbeeld. ’n multi-funksioneledak wat oor die A-netbalbaan gebou is.

Die volgende projek is om ’n astrobaanvir die hokkiespanne te bou.

Die skool is baie opgewonde oor die pro-jek aangesien daar soveel positiewe uit-komste kan wees. Die skool kan byvoor-beeld beter teen groot hokkie-skole kompe-teer.Eenvandiebelangriksteaspekteisdatso ’n projek ook vir die dorp ’n aanwinsmoet wees. Indirek behou Hugenote diegeld van Wellington binne Wellington.

Die fasiliteit kan gebruikword om groottoernooie ookaan tebiedwaaraan laersko-le, tersiêre instellings en die onderskeiehokkieklubs kan deelneem.

Hierdie projek sal by verre een van die

grootstes nógweeswatHoërskoolHugeno-te aandurf, aangesien die koste van so ’nprojek ongeveer R6miljoen beloop. Hier-voor benodig die skool hulp van die ouers,gemeenskap en sakemanne. Dit moet ge-sien word as ’n belegging in die toekomsvan Wellington en Hoërskool Hugenote.

Daar gaan verskeie projekte afgeskopword om geld in te samel. Die eerste hier-vanwatdadelikafskopisdie“Koop-’n-blok-kie”-projek. Daar is blokkies van R1 000,R5 000 en R10 000 beskikbaar. Indien jy ’nblokkie koop, sal jy erkenning teen ’n er-kenningsmuurkrywatbydiebaanopgeriggaanword. Groter bedrae sal groter erken-ning ontvang.

’n Eerste R10 000-blok is alreeds verkoopaan ’n oud eerste spanspeler, wat verledejaar sy stryd teen kanker verloor het. Pie-ter-Jan Geldenhuys se ouers het sy spaar-geld vir die skool beskikbaar gestel ter na-gedagtenis aan hierdie dapper stryder.
