Dr. Epifania Tabada, Dean of the college of Education & Director of CCE of the Technological Institute of the Philippines, Hon. Mila Ramos, Member of the Board for Librarian, PAARL past presidents absent and present this morning, Prof. Sally Arlante, UP University Librarian Mr. Rodolfo Y. Tarlit, CEU Chief Librarian Dr. Teresita Hernandez-Calma, PWU Chief Librarian Mrs. Diony Angeles, Mrs. Marietta Molina, Mr. Roderick Ramos, 2012 President Dr. Sonia Gementiza and her execute board, and 2013 President Mr. Sonny Boy Manalo and his executive board, fellow awardees, friends and respected colleagues in PAARL and in the profession, associate members, ladies and gentlemen!
A pleasant morning to all!
According to Satchel Paige, “Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
I am honoured, happy and thankful to stand here and receive the highest recognition given by PAARL to an academic / research librarian – the PAARL Lifetime Achievement Award 2012. This really means a lot to me. On the other hand, I’m sad because this is the last award that I will receive from PAARL. The term “lifetime achievement” is deeply heart-warming, but also signifies a tone of being so old. A few days ago my husband asked me, “….since that will be your last award from PAARL, would that mean you will be a full-time housewife?” I just laughed.
Since the word “lifetime” is attached to this award, let me share with you a part of my life with PAARL. I joined PAARL in 1977 with then president, the late Ms. Nena R. Mata, while I was the microforms librarian of the Rizal Library of the Ateneo de Manila University. It is still vivid in my mind when I started to work as part of the executive committee of PAARL. I started as the association’s Secretary in 1984, and then in 1986 and 1987 I both served as a Board Member concurrent with being the Chairman of the Membership Committee. This was the first time that PAARL published a directory of its members. In 1988, I served as the vice-President, concurrent with being the Chairman for Special Projects. 1989 was the year when I became the President of PAARL, the first time that I became one for a national association. In 1990, during the time Mr. Rodolfo Tarlit was president, as an ex-officio, I was tasked the creation of the PAARL Scholarship grants and awards – a one-man standing committee. I set the criteria and solicited cash donations to the fund these awards. The first awardees were Rev. Fr. Paul M. de Vera, OSB and Ms. Corazon M. Nera for the Outstanding Academic Librarians Awards for 1990.
The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians, Inc. held its 40th Annual General Assembly last January 25, 2013, 8:00am to 12:00nn at the Technological Institute of the Philippines, Quezon City, Seminar Rooms A & B. INAUGURAL SPEECH(Delivered by Sonny Boy T. Manalo on the occasion of the 40th Annual General Assembly & Induction/Awarding Ceremonies
at Technological Institute of the Philippines, Cubao, Quezon City, 25 January 2013)
as well as its Top-Management who were in one-way made this occasion happened. They would actually attend this momentous event but because of unavoidable circumstances they have to attend prior commitment. With this, Thank you Madame President, Thank you TIP. I rose from a simple library working student to a higher position of a Librarian just like of being in PAARL, I was just a simple member who dreamed to be part of the executive board and serves its very much active members. Today, that dream was realized, the clamor of the voting members of PAARL and the executive board want me to serve and lead the association. As your new president, I am accepting this responsibility and I will borrow of what the past president of PAARL then said “I can assure you my utmost dedication and principled actions in continuing the great legacy of our association which we have earned through the years”. Today, as we celebrate the Ruby Year of PAARL, I will still continue the priority needs of the association that was once the priority of those past presidents.1. Increase advocacy and marketing of the association;2 . D e v e l o p a n d m a n a g e t h e A s s o c i a t i o n ’ s f i n a n c i a l r e s o u r c e s ;3 . I n c r e a s e m e m b e r s h i p ;4. Massive promotion and campaign on Scholarship Grants by PAARL to its members;5. Extend the scholarship program not only to our PAARL members but also to underprivileged but deserving High School graduates here in Metro Manila and in the provinces who are willing to take the four year Library Science program in any state college or university here in our country. In line with this, I am appealing to everybody who had a library science course in there school to have a career talks so that we can increase the number of librarians here in the Philippines; and6. Develop future leaders and advocates.
Honorable Mila M. Ramos, PRC-BFL Board, distinguished past PAARL presidents, awardees, honored guests, our dear PAARL members, colleagues and friends, a pleasant morning. Before I begin my speech, may I ask a minute of silence from everyone present here as a sign of respect, honor and pray for the repose of the soul of our colleague, mentor and one of the pillars of Philippine Librarianship, our dear Mrs. Suzima L. Gonzales. May she rest in peace! As I stand before you, allow me to express my sincere appreciation to all of you who came here and joined us once again on this annual event of PAARL., to the Library Staff of TIP who are with me all the way to this position. To the ever supportive President of Technological Institute of the Philippines, Dr. Elizabeth Quirino-Lahoz

With these in mind, I am proud to announce the Calendar of Activities for the year 2013 which was drafted and finalized during our Planning-Workshop held at the National Library of the Philippines on January 12, 2013. All the activities of the association on its 40th founding year will be focused to the theme “ Library Future : Changes and Challenges” the theme is in relation to the IFLA 2013 in Singapore theme which is “Future Libraries : Infinite Possibilities”. Moreover, in honor of the founder of Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL) the Public Forum will be changed into Marina G. Dayrit Lecture Series. There will be five series in a row, first series will be on February 22 with the topic “Making Things Easier : New Design for Better Libraries”, second series will be on March 22 with the theme “Library Readiness to K-12 Basic Education Program”, third series will be on July during the ABAP Book Fair with the topic :Treating Print in a Hybrid Library Environment : Issues, Dilemmas and Directions” fourth of the series is on the theme “Key Issues in Electronic Collection Development” which will be held on September duringthe Manila International Book Fair and fifth series will be on November 29 with the topic “Libraries as Learning Environment” with PAARLNet.” With the major activities that the association prepared for this year is on the “Resource Description and Access (RDA) Training of Trainers” that will be held on April 3-5 at De La Salle University Manila. This major activity will be co-sponsored by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts – National Commission in Library and Information Services (NCCA-NCLIS) a f t e r the said training the association will also cascade it to the Mindanao on April 22-23 at Cagayan De Oro City and at the same time this will now be the National Summer Conference, Luzon training will be on May 16-17 at Lyceum of the Philippine University at General Trias, Cavite and in Visayas on June 27-28 at Cebu City. I think the most awaited activity for this year is the celebration of the 40th Year (Ruby) Founding Anniversary of PAARL THAT WILL BE ON September 2013 as well as the most exciting activity of PAARL’s international exposure either to Shanghai, China, Seoul, South Korea or Bangkok, Thailand on October 22-25. The above-mentioned activities will be surpassed with the help of my co-Executive Board Officers and your utmost cooperation and participation.
With al l these, we wil l let i t be done in God’s grace.
