By working closely last year with the school district’s Food and Nutrition Services Director, Nicole Meschi, CAFF was able to help increase local produce purchases by 10%, and educate students about the importance of eating more fruits and veg- etables. These efforts helped the district increase its local produce purchasing by nearly 13% during the 2011-2012 school year, and reach over 6,600 students with direct nutrition education. Now the Pajaro Valley Community Health Trust, among other funders, has stepped up to help support the new “Farm to Cafeteria” program. A natural next step to further increase access to healthy, local food in district meal programs, the Farm to Cafeteria program will help the school district insti- tutionalize its efforts to increase access to and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by: Building a volunteer infrastructure to support ongoing Harvest of the Month nutrition education at five elemen- tary schools; Working with PVUSD suppliers to source more whole fruits and vegetables for school meals; Developing a cafeteria marketing program Piloting recipes featuring local foods; and Increasing local produce purchases by another 10%, resulting in 20% of produce purchases being local. Ultimately CAFF’s program model addresses the complex causes of childhood obesity through providing linkages between education, food access, agriculture, the environment, local economies, and health and nutrition. CAFF works to transform students from passive consumers to informed eaters who make good nutrition choices by interacting with their food systems. As school districts purchase from local farms, they connect health and nutrition to local agriculture and economics, as many students’ families are employed in local agriculture. By linking classroom learning and a district’s school meal program to the lo- cal agricultural economy, CAFF works to build a local food system that improves the health and economy of the local community. CAFF is seeking community and parent volunteers to assist with nutrition education in the district. Contact Kathryn Spencer, at [email protected] if you would like to be involved.

Throughout the Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD), school lunch plays a critical role in stu-dents’ lives. Over 70% of all students are eligible for

free or reduced priced lunches, indicating that their families’ incomes fall at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. Most of these students eat two meals every day at school, relying on the program to provide the bulk of their meals.

Which is why, in an age when our children are strug-gling against the epidemic of overweight and obesity, it is essential to provide them with healthy food choices at every opportunity.

What is Farm to School? The Farm to School Programs connects farms with school cafeterias and classrooms. These programs can include farm field trips, nutrition educa-tion, adding local food to lunch lines, or teaching in school gardens. Farm to School programs are most effective when they combine two main elements: fresh local produce ap-pears on the school menu, while students learn about local agriculture and nutrition.

“Farm to Cafeteria” Program in Pajaro Valley Unified School District

For over 30 years, the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) has advocated for California family farmers and sustainable agriculture. A decade ago, CAFF began to form partnerships with schools and districts through our “Farm to School” programs, which teaches students where their food comes from and helps bring local produce into cafeterias.

In the Pajaro Valley, CAFF has partnered with PVUSD since 2001 to bring a wide variety of Farm to School programs to stu-dents. By working closely last year with the school district’s Food and Nutrition Services Director, Nicole Meschi, CAFF was able to help increase local produce purchases by 10%, and educate students about the importance of eating more fruits and veg-etables.

A natural next step to further increase access to healthy, local food in district meal programs, the Farm to Cafeteria program will help the school district insti-tutionalize its efforts to increase access to and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by:

• Building a volunteer infrastructure to support ongoing Harvest of the Month nutrition education at five elemen-tary schools;

• Working with PVUSD suppliers to source more whole fruits and vegetables for school meals;

• Developing a cafeteria marketing program

• Piloting recipes featuring local foods; and

• Increasing local produce purchases by another 10%, resulting in 20% of produce purchases being local.

By linking classroom learning and a district’s school meal program to the lo-cal agricultural economy, CAFF works to build a local food system that improves the health and economy of the local community.

CAFF is seeking community and parent volunteers to assist with nutrition education in the district. Contact Kathryn Spencer, at [email protected] if you would like to be involved.
