Know the difference between ‘state’, ‘suggest’, ‘describe’, ‘give a reason’ and ‘explain’.

Remember the sentence frames and use it correctly.

Multiple Choice Questions

• Read question and study diagram carefully

• Highlight key points

• Attempt to answer the question before looking at the distractors (options 1, 2, 3 or 4)

• Find the answer among the distractors

• Not simply the correct answer, but the best answer.

• Apply elimination method to confirm that the other three distractors are incorrect

Open Ended Questions

• Read question and study diagram(s) carefully

• Highlight key points (observations, purpose, data, results, variables)

• Estimate the amount of information required by noting:

• Marks awarded (1 or 2 marks)

• Question words (state, name, explain, reason, compare, classify, draw)

Steam. Water is boiling and steam can be seen.

Clouds. Water evaporates and condenses into clouds

Hot air. When water boils, air above it gains heat and expand. Hot air rises at point A.

Cloud/water droplets. Water gained heat from the heat source and changed its state from liquid to gas. Steam lost heat to the surrounding cooler air and condensed in water droplets.
