42 munster interiors This newly built two-storey house is located a few miles from Ennis in a rural setting, yet when you step inside the door, you quickly realise that the interior style owes nothing to country living - it’s city chic all the way. The owners are two busy professionals who hired Ennis-based interior design firm Missi Gray, to give them a modern, uncluttered and calm space as a retreat from their hectic lifestyles. According to interior designer Marina Slattery, owners Bernie and Dominic O’Rourke were clear about what they wanted. “They requested a simple and uncluttered environment, with great comfort,” she says. “We were specifically asked to ensure that the guest bedrooms were designed to exude a homely welcoming feel for their extended family and friends. Another very specific request was to design a contemporary home office for Bernie who runs her own business, Active Safety Systems, a health and safety training and consultancy company.” To meet the brief, the palette of colours used throughout the house includes gentle, cool shades of grey and warm white on the walls, with a small number of feature walls, including in the master bedroom, painted a sophisticated, rich, mocha brown. The kitchen is cleverly designed to create an airy feel, and to increase the sense of space. The design tricks skilfully employed include high-gloss, white, built-in units, a pale grey quartz worktop, an open based breakfast bar and the use of glass doors on the wall- mounted units. The walls are painted soft grey, while the large polished marble tiles are a neutral linen colour. The downlighters are complemented by a collection of three low-hanging pendant lamps, strategically placed over the breakfast bar. The family room, off the kitchen, is furnished for comfort. This room runs the depth of the house, so is quite long and can easily accommodate the two large corner sofas that almost compel you to kick off your shoes and lounge. One of the sofas is covered in a caramel coloured, wide corduroy fabric while the other is upholstered in ivory corduroy. are plentiful but considered, for instance the cushions on the sofas match theupholstery fabric, the brown/grey silk curtains are plush and fulsome, but totally inkeeping with the muted palette. Similarly, while the beautifully made coffee table is notkept clear, you can tell that the ceramics and wood crafted items that adorn it havebeen carefully chosen, as have the items on the shelves.
To the front of the house is a more formal reception room, which again boasts avoluptuous corner sofa, this time upholstered in smoky blue velvet. A splash of lime isadded by way of three large chenille cushions. A striking piece of artwork with anintense rust red circular motif perfectly matches the colours of a series of ceramicvessels placed on the shelves opposite. There is also an elegant cream armchair, witha simple chrome framed side tale placed alongside it. A circular mirror with a fluted

chrome frame complements the table and also the artwork. The low coffee tableplaced in front of the sofa makes a quality statement in the heart of the room with itsdark lacquered finish.
There are some elegant occasional pieces throughout the house, including a tactileconsole table with wonderfully curved legs, and a heavyset mirror with an elaborateinlaid dark grey metal frame hangs overhead. The dining room has a rich cherry wooddining table, accompanied by ivory leather high-back chairs. There is a lovely crackledglass based table lamp placed on the console in this room, capped by an elegant silkshade and you can’t ignore the carved wooden Buddha head that seems to keep awatchful eye over proceedings.
Upstairs, the master bedroom is decorated to look both calm and confident. The

button bed-head is tall and tastefully upholstered in taupe raw silk fabric. A good senseof balance is achieved with the taller than usual bedside lamps with their unfussy glassbase and silver white silk shades. The central light has also been well chosen with itslarge square woven shade, bordered with a crisp black trim.
In the first of the guest bedrooms, burnt orange accessories light up the chocolatetones of the tall silk upholstered bed head and central lampshade. There’s a great mixof tactile fabrics in this room, with wool, chenille and silks. Two zany orange lamps,with orange coloured glass bases and shades, practically zing on either side of the bed.Even the white leather armchair is totally cheered up by an orange silk cushion. Thesecond double guest bedroom is slightly more muted, with a cream leather bed head,while the bed itself is accessorised with brown, tangerine and striped cushions - all

All three bathrooms in this house have been fitted with top quality sanitary wareand the décor for each is refined, easy on the eye, while also having a timeless androom-like feel. The en-suite bathroom off the master bedroom features a mix of largeglossy rectangular wall tiles, with a relief band of thin rectangular tiles in the sameshade of brown. The solid, no-nonsense sink rests on a crisp pedestal.
The main bathroom has mirrors running along facing walls, adding to the sense ofspaciousness. The large sink is fitted into a very stylish granite topped vanity unit.Brown high gloss tiles are used as splashbacks behind the sink and Jacuzzi bath, while

the capacious Jacuzzi is panelled with shimmering white mosaic tiles, as is the stepleading to the bath, which is also fitted with recessed LED lighting. The third bathroomis a little more daring, with a strip of zesty lemon tiles running from floor to ceiling,very much in keeping with the slightly retro sink. A framed poster picks up on thelemon colour theme. Apart from the strip of tiles behind the sink, the remainder of theroom is painted dove grey – a perfect foil for lemon!
The O’Rourkes moved into their new home a few months ago and Marina Slatteryreports that they are very happy with the interiors, and feel that they tick all the boxes.“Not only does it look stylish, but it is also a very comfortable home.” ❊
