Even a teddy bear found in thedebris that was once a proud pri-mary school in Piako had amournful look on its face.
Kereone School, which closedin 2014 after more than 90 yearsservice, was smashed to pieces byits government owners last weekto the horror of the local com-munity.
‘‘It’s wanton destruction,’’ saidDon Perrin, principal at theschool for 16 years.
‘‘There was a signed agree-ment between the ministry andthe community, with no mentionof demolition.’’
Two main classrooms were‘‘smashed to smithereens’’, withthe school swimming pool cavedin and tennis courts destroyed.
‘‘The community is devas-tated,’’ said Perrin.
Board chair Gary Lever saidhe had no contact with the minis-try before the diggers arrived.
‘‘They should’ve let the com-munity know.’’
Lever also understood thatprivate tender negotiations wereundertaken.
‘‘This is a helluva shock.’’Lever said there had been
three inquiries in the last year tobuy buildings for removal.
The classrooms containednative timber, with roofing ironjust a year old when the schoolclosed, he said. Fencing aroundthe tennis courts was almost new.
Ministry of Education spokes-man Jerome Sheppard said:‘‘When schools are closed and no
longer needed for educationalpurposes, we often demolish, sellor gift school buildings on the site.
‘‘In most cases we clear theland so that it can either beoffered to the original owners, orused in a Treaty [of Waitangi]settlement, or sold, as required bythe Public Works Act.
‘‘This is so there are noremaining issues for the nextowners of the property, such asbuildings containing asbestos(which he said was the case atKereone).’’
Sheppard said the ministrywas ‘‘not aware’’ of anyexpressions of interest for thebuildings.
Considering recycling buildingmaterials, he said ‘‘in this case itwould cost more to take the build-ings apart board by board than wewere likely to recover’’.
Sheppard said, in line withgovernment procurement rules, tenders for demolition do not needto be advertised publicly if theestimated cost of the work isbelow a particular threshold.

Anzac Day has come aroundagain and I am looking forward towhat I think is a truly special dayon our calendar.
In the 30 years I have workedfor community newspapers in theWaikato I have nearly alwayscovered Anzac Day services.
It is probably something Iwould attend anyway, even if Iwasn’t working.
My grandfather fought atGallipoli and my father served inthe Middle East in World WarTwo.
I have been fortunate enoughto have visited Turkey twice – thefirst in 1988 and again last August– both times making thepilgrimage to Gallipoli.
The peninsula remainsprobably much as it was morethan a century ago.
No nearby homes or towns tospeak of, with a narrow, stoneybeach.
Looking down from raisedpositions like Chunuk Bair andLone Pine to Anzac Cove, you getsome idea of what our troopsfaced.

In the first of a seriesof stories about theRDA in the Waikatotown of Waihou,Teresa Ramseyexplores what it’s liketo volunteer.
Mark Kinghan satisfies his love ofhorses and helping others everyWednesday morning.
He has been volunteering atthe Te Aroha & Districts Ridingfor the Disabled in Waihou forabout eight months.
With a background in mentalhealth and education servicessupport work, he enjoys walkingnext to the horses and riders eachweek.
‘‘I love horses,’’ he said.‘‘But I can’t afford horses so
this is really the best of bothworlds.’’
The self-employed gardenermakes the time each week to pitchin for the organisation, whichdoes incredible work for peoplewith disabilities.
‘‘If you’ve got the time and youcan get out here, it’s just a goodexperience, especially if you lovehorses or you want to get involvedwith horses,’’ Kinghan said.
‘‘We love coming here and wewalk out with a smile at the end ofit.’’
The specially-trained RDAhorses had an important role toplay for riders, both physicallyand emotionally.
Kinghan, who is fromMorrinsville, said he was con-stantly amazed by how quicklysome riders calmed down whenaround the quiet equines.
‘‘It’s incredible how you’ll getan autistic kid come in all overthe place and 10 minutes on ahorse and you can see an effect.’’
Riders also included adultswho were stiff because of an ill-ness or disability, he said.
‘‘They loosen up during theride, it’s just the movement of the
horses and being next to an ani-mal. It just works.’’
The Te Aroha RDA isstruggling to stay afloat. Thereare currently fewer than 10regular volunteers andanother 20 are desperatelyneeded. For those not
interested in handling horses, volunteers were also neededfor book work, generalmaintenance and odd jobs.To donate: givealittle.co.nz/org/tearoharda. For moreinformation phone 021 02214270 or [email protected].

Principal goes back to old schoolTERESA RAMSEY
‘‘Our kids in NewZealand are well-rounded, they get theclass aspect and they getthe outside, physicalworld.’’Andrea Colebourn
Andrea Colebourn fondly rememberswhen she went to St Joseph’s School inMorrinsville as a child.
Now, after working overseas for manyyears, she is back as principal of theschool and enjoys working with the chil-dren of her old school friends.
‘‘I wanted to come back to spend moretime with my family. I really love beingback,’’ she said.
After St Joseph’s School, Colebournwent to Sacred Heart Girls’ College inHamilton, then spent five years atMassey University in Palmerston Northstudying to become a teacher.
She completed a diploma in both earlychildhood and primary school teaching, then completed a Bachelor of Education.
Her first teaching job was at PahoiaSchool in Mt Maunganui for four years, then six years at Omanu School.
She held leadership roles in healthand physical education at both schools, with her students earning a national titlein Jump Jam Kidz Aerobix.
Colebourn then moved overseas, working as a founding principal of a pre-school in South Korea for one year.
She then moved to the Middle East, first working as a teacher advisor beforetaking up the role of primary schoolspecialist for the Education Council inAbu Dhabi.
She moved back to Morrinsville inDecember 2014, for the Kiwi lifestyle andto work in the New Zealand educationsystem again.
‘‘You can’t beat what we offer in NewZealand,’’ she said.
‘‘Our kids in New Zealand are well-rounded, they get the class aspect andthey get the outside, physical world and Ithink that’s important.’’
Colebourn spent the first half of 2015studying a Masters in Educational Lead-ership and Management, which she has
nearly completed. In term three of last year she taught at
St Joseph’s, taking on a deputy
principal’s position in term four. She took on the principal’s role when
former principal Clark McPhillipsresigned for health reasons.
Colebourn has big plans for theschool, which include knocking outinternal classroom walls to create aninnovative learning environment.
She also planned to enhance the Cath-olic faith in the school and upskill digitalresources to enhance teaching and learn-ing, she said.
‘‘I’m trying to open up our little worldto what kids need,’’ she said.

Annual huntingand fishing eventhits 31st year
There will be familyentertainment, including a pig-carrying competition, spot prizes, food andrefreshments.
The Grand Tavern Hunting & Fish-
ing Club will be holding its annual
open hunting and fishing compe-
tition for the 31st year in a row.
The three-day competition, which
draws hunters and anglers from all
over the North Island, will be held on
May 12-14.
Secretary Elaine Hamilton said
the club was formed in 1985 as the
Grand Tavern Hunting Club and
renamed in 1993.
The open section includes
heaviest snapper, trout, boar and
deer.
The junior section, for those
under 16 and still at school, has the
option of hares, rabbits, possums or
eels.
Due to the declining number of
eels, all live eels brought in would be
released, she said.
There will be family entertain-
ment, including a pig-carrying com-
petition, spot prizes, food and
refreshments.
Prizes include tyres to the value
of $1000, chainsaws, a rifle, dog
boxes, GPS, Iceytec bins, and a
Kayak and life jacket.
All juniors registering on May 14
will receive a free t-shirt.
Hunting and fishing can start
from 1am May 12 but competitors
must be back at the Grand Tavern
between 1pm and 4pm on May 14 for
weigh in.
All excess funds from this compe-
tition are given back to the com-
munity.
Last year the club donated money
to the Te Aroha Community Hos-
pital, BMX Club and Air Ambulance.
Entry forms are available from
the Grand Tavern Te Aroha.

WAR OF WORDS CONTINUESON TOWN BROCHUREThis is in response to MarionLaurence’s letter (Piako PostApril 6). I read with interestMarion Laurence’s grammaticalcritique of the ‘Welcome toMorrinsville’ pamphlet.Unfortunately, the volunteerswho assembled the pamphlet, onbehalf of Morrinsville, did nothave the qualifications such thatMs Laurence holds. Havingbought this to public attention, via the newspaper, it has belittledthem somewhat, and caused themsome embarrassment. However, Iam sure they will rise above it andcontinue to encourage people ineveryway possible to visit thegreat little town of Morrinsville. There are many voluntaryorganisations in Morrinsville thatwork for the good of the town. Iam sure during the raising offunds etc. that they have to use theprinted word. Perhaps, MsLaurence could be in a position tooffer to proof read such printedwords, or even better, volunteer towrite them in the first place, thereby saving any furtherembarrassment, and further
concern to herself.

COUNTRY HOSPITALITYI just want to express my
gratitude and my experience ofbeing an Aucklander going to theTe Aroha Breeders day races forthe first time on Saturday April 9.I have been working in Te Arohasince November and the dailyhospitality from the people in thetownship is just one out of the box.I arrived on course via a car liftfrom the motel, I was met by agentleman at the grass entranceintroducing himself as Peter, whoI found out later was Peter Lock.He proudly showed me round themarquees , the facilities, then themain office where I wasintroduced to many committeemembers and I was truly treatedlike a man of importance. I havebeen to Cox Plates, Melbourne,Sydney, Brisbane and 80 per centof NZ racecourses, and Te Arohatops the lot.
Te Aroha should be extremelyproud of what they have in theirtown and I just wish there couldbe more than just one big meetinga year at Te Aroha. Local people
talked about that all day. I cameby myself on Saturday’s racemeeting but I left meeting at least20-plus new friends and willreturn next year with friendsfrom Auckland because theredefinitely is life after theBombays. Te Aroha is living proofof that. Well done Te Aroha andeverybody that had a part to playon their big day.

LIBRARY TOILETSI was in the Te Aroha Library
recently and was in desperateneed of a toilet. The librarianadvised me I would have to usethe toilet in the park, as they don’thave a toilet. I am an elderly ladythat requires a walker. This isridiculous that the library doesn’thave a toilet for it’ patrons to use.Why is this? And isn’t it time thisgets to be more ‘user friendly’.
Bev Selby
Kenwyn Rest Home resident
Matamata-Piako DistrictCouncil communicationsofficer Adele Preston replies:The Te Aroha Library is an olderbuilding that was constructedwithout public toilets, howeverthere is an existing toilet inHerries Park less than 50 metresfrom the library. This toilet, which includes disabled access, isdue for replacement within thenext few months.

FOOTBALLTe ArohaMen’s premier team – a depleted Te Arohamen’s B side travelled to Te Awamutuwiththe hope of rallying to steal the points, butsuffered their first loss of the year, losing2-0 to Te Awamutu. With five frontlineplayers unavailable for Saturday’smatch,
coach Peter Hurd called upon a numberof youngsters to fill the void against a TeAwamutu side who sat among thecompetition’s best in terms of goalsscored. Ultimately Te Arohawere outrunin themiddle of the park, and couldn’tmanage to get enough shots away tocompete in thematch, eventually goingdown 2-0. This Saturday Te Aroha travelaway toWest Hamilton.Men’s reserve team – it was a similar storyfor the club’s reserve side, who hadseveral key players out due to personalcommitments. Te Aroha competedwellwith the visiting Te Awamutu side, butwere run down in the end, losing 5-1. Afterconceding on 20minutes, the home siderecoveredwell to strike back via aspectacular Troy Rosser half-volley fromoutside of the box. Tied 1-1 at the break TeArohawere right in thematch, but leakedgoals in the crucial first 15minutes.Captain RobMarshall took home theManof theMatch award after a stellar effort inthemiddle of the park. Late goals to TeAwamutu blew the score line out to 5-1. TeAroha have a bye this week.Women’s team – had a bye over theweekend.
CRICKETMorrinsville Musketeers vs HamiltonUnder 25sOn a chilly day the Hamilton U25s traveledtoMorrinsville for a friendly 40 overmatch. Winning the toss would haveplayed a big factor, and in this case itdidn’t go theway of theMusketeers, whowere put in to field. With overcastconditions the U25s got off to a flyer bygetting to a score of 110/1 after 9 overs. The spin twins, Banroj Sidhu and JackKane, then came on to slow the run ratedown and bagged twowickets each. Atdrinks (20 overs) the Under 25s were at anexceptionally threatening score of 184/5and looking to get to 400. Death bowlingmaster Paul Keogh came into the attack inthe 23rd over with the score at 205/5, andended up taking all 5 wickets in 5 oversandwas just too good for the lowermiddle order. There was also anoutstanding and energetic fieldingperformance by Baljit Buttar who took ascreamer of a catch on the boundary andsaved plenty of runs. The U25smanaged ahealthy total of 251 in a rain shortened 35overs which could have beenmuchworse. Just like their batting, the Under25s bowlingwas quite deadly, by takingthe short bowling formula which provedtowork. TheMusketeers batsmenmade agood start with GlenMcLoughlin, andthen Peter Kane coming in to give a fewgood smashes. TheMusketeers had agood run rate at the start by reaching49/2 after 7 overs, but lost their way andhad a bigmiddle order collapse. The U25swere proven the better team on the dayand held theMusketeers to 151 runs totake thewin by 100 runs. TheMan of theMatch for theMusketeers was deathbowler Paul Keoghwith figures of 5/28from 5 overs and an outstanding catch atmidwicket.

Like any expectant parent, we had
some anxious moments before
our new baby – the revamped
Piako Post – was born today.
But, we are incredibly proud of
the finished product.
It’s fresh, it’s new and it’s what
our valued readers and
advertisers have been asking for.
As part of a Fairfax Media
initiative across the country, your
favourite community newspaper
has undergone a complete over-
haul from masthead to back page.
Piako Post, together with Fair-
fax Mediacommunity
newspapers from around the
country, asked 1000 readers what
they thought about their local
newspaper.
They told us we need to have
lots and lots of faces from our
community – people we all recog-
nise (from our neighbourhood,
street and town).
Readers also want us to make
them feel good about living in the
Piako district by including stories
that are positive and upbeat.
While we have some new and
exciting additions, local news will
remain at the heart of the Piako
Post.
Our coverage is headed by our
vastly experienced reporter
Teresa Ramsey.
Flick the page and you will see
Your Paper, Your Place – a page 2
staple which includes the top five
things to do in our community
over the next week, a word from
me, an index of this week’s
contents and our contacts.
Our general news coverage
will continue to put our people
first – good folk doing good things
– plus events, issues, schools,
sports, clubs, groups and organis-
ations.
The Letters to the Editor page –
renamed Conversations – will fea-
ture guest editorials from people
in the community.
With assistance from the
Morrinsville and Te Aroha infor-
mation centres, and Hamilton &
Waikato Tourism, we are running
a detailed What’s On listing to
highlight feature events in our
community over the next seven
days.
Last, but by no means least is a
new puzzles page.
Every week we will have popu-
lar columns from the likes of Dr
Libby (health) and Nadia Lim
(cooking).
We look forward to your
feedback on our new baby.

This how we do it in New Zealand – we drive on the left side of the road.
Why do we actuallydrive on the left?
Because the most efficientway to use a weapon withthe right hand was to makesure the opponent was tothe right of the horse, medieval swordsmenwould have ridden on theleft side of the road.
If a foreign tourist comes towards you on the wrong side ofthe road, don’t necessarily blame the driver – blame right-handedness. Or Napoleon. Rob Maetzig backgrounds whywe drive on the left.
Next time you get in the driver’s seat on theright-hand side of your car, store everythingin the centre console to your left, grip thesteering wheel with your right hand, thenhead down the left side of the street, considerthat you are doing exactly what yourmedieval ancestors would have done.
The only real difference is that instead ofgetting in via the right-hand front door of thecar, they would have found it easier to mounttheir horse from the left, swinging their rightleg over before getting in the saddle. Why?Because they would have had their swordstored in its scabbard on their left side, readyto be pulled out with the right hand to helpdeal to any danger.
And because the most efficient way to usea weapon with the right hand was to makesure the opponent was to the right of thehorse, these medieval swordsmen wouldhave ridden on the left side of the road.
Today, hundreds of years later, we stilldrive down the left side of the road, Well, about 39 per cent of do – all the rest of theworld now drives on the right side of theroad.
Apparently there are several reasons whymore than half of us now drive on the right.
The story goes that it all began in the 18thCentury when large wagons hitched up toseveral pairs of horses began to be used tohaul big loads of farm products in France andthe United States. These wagons had nodriver’s seats, and instead the driver sat onthe left rear horse so he could keep his rightarm free to use his whip. Because the driverwas on the left, visibility was best down theleft side of his team of horses, so these teamsbegan keeping to the right side of the road.
Late that century the French Revolutionadded impetus to the change to the right – upuntil then the aristocracy travelled to the leftand peasants to the right, but after the revol-ution the aristocrats decided to keep a lowprofile by joining up with the peasants ontheir side of the road.
What were the French bureaucrats to do?The answer was obvious – in 1794 theyturned into law the trend to travel on theright side of the road. Then when Napoleonembarked on his conquests throughoutEurope, he spread the law to those countriesas well, with the only nations keeping leftbeing those that resisted Napoleon’s
advances. One of those countries was Great Britain,
which in 1835 made it mandatory to drive onthe left side of the road. All other members ofthe British Empire followed suit, and that’swhy New Zealand and Australia are right-hand drive to this day.
Over the years various countries haveshifted their driving habits from one side ofthe road to the other, almost exclusively fromleft to right, but some have gone from theright to the left – the latest being Samoawhich changed to right-hand driving in 2009so it could become easier to import second-
hand cars from Japan and New Zealand.Great Britain once thought it might like to
change sides too – which obviously wouldhave meant a change for New Zealand aswell. In 1960 it was proposed to join most ofthe rest of Europe and switch to left-handdrive, but a combination of political oppo-sition and the potential cost of the changesoon put a halt to that idea.
So which is best? There is some evidence to suggest that
driving on the left side of the road is safer, simply because the greater percentage of theworld’s motorists are right-handed and there-fore right-eye dominant.
This means the stronger right hand can beused to control the steering wheel, and theright eye is the one closest to oncomingtraffic.
Whatever, it all means that as New Zea-land’s tourism industry grows, an increasingnumber of visitors from places as diverse asChina, South Korea, USA and Germany willfind themselves touring our country on the‘wrong’ side of the road.
You can blame Napoleon for that.

For vegetarians or vegans, almonds and some other nuts are a good source of protein.

Your healthWITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY
I think I’m lacking in protein, Ieat a relatively balanced dietand include meat but I read it’sdifficult to get enough protein. What are your thoughts on this? With thanks – Susie.
Hi Susie. Protein is anessential macronutrient. Itsupplies us energy, helps ourbodies recover and is a criticalpart of our immune system.Proteins are composed of aminoacids, which are the buildingblocks of muscle and other bodyproteins.
In the Western world it’s prettydifficult to become proteindeficient if you eat a varied dietconsisting of whole foods.
The reasons you may not begetting enough protein are fairlystraightforward such as, notconsuming enough food ingeneral (low energy/calorierestrictive diet), you’re followinga restricted diet such as avegetarian or vegan diet, or if youhave some digestive systemsproblems. If it is the latter, you
may not absorb the amino acidsfrom your proteins foodseffectively. If you don’t eatenough food, your body may nothave enough amino acids forbuilding muscles, immunity, andhealthy hair, skin and nails etc.
Science currently suggeststhat the average person needs toconsume somewhere between 0.5and 1 gram of protein perkilogram of body weight. Onaverage, this suggests that for aperson who weighs 70kg, thatwould be about 55 grams ofprotein per day.
But consuming ‘‘adequate’’amounts of protein depends on anumber of factors including: yourphysical activity, age, currentmuscle mass or current state ofhealth (particular medicalconditions can require higher orlower consumptions of protein).Furthermore, nothing in natureis 100 per cent protein. Manypeople have been misinformedabout how much protein theyactually need for optimal health.
I’m a health coach and I wantedto know what your top threehealth tips would be for anyonewanting to lead a healthierlifestyle? Thanks, Chrystal.
Hi Chrystal. It’s difficult tochoose just three – but Ithink these tips are great foranyone wanting to improvetheir health and wellbeing,regardless of their current healthstatus;
1. Instead of focusing on eating
less of something that isn’t goodfor you, focus on eating morewhole real food.
2. Become breath aware. A lotof people live on adrenalin and it
can cause a host of problems.Diaphragmatic breathing lowersstress hormones more effectivelythan anything.
3. Stay in touch with what agift life is. When we feel gratefulwe can’t be stressed.
