Enthusiastic volunteers enjoy working bee www.pictondawnchorus.nzEmail: [email protected]

Picton Dawn Chorus

By James Wilson, PDC Chair

With a burst of energy from an enthusiastic group of Picton Dawn Chorus volunteers, seventy new trap boxes were created over a three-day working bee. The rst day was spent cutting and shaping the wire grids that form the ends of each box. The subsequent two days, spent at Bruce Richard’s abundant workshop, saw seven men cutting, assembling, glueing, nailing and tting traps in a feverish display of creativity. The completed traps, all tted with DOC200 trap mechanisms, will be placed on Victoria Domain, some being spread along existing rat trap lines and some inlling on vacant places. These placements will intensify the trap density and also will more eectively deal with mustelids, such as stoats and weasels. The working bee, described by one female observer as “the Last of the Summer Wine on Steroids”, proved to be a great success. The well-nished traps were assembled at highly competitive prices giving the participants a feeling of bonhomie and a job well done. The lesson learned was that in future Dawn Chorus has the volunteers, skills and facilities for creating more trap boxes whenever they are required. If you wish to help in the future, please call 021 285 1858 to have your name added to the list.Special mention should be made of Blacks Fasteners, who provided much of the hardware needed, and of Neil Black (no relation) who accumulated the timber and cut and painted the lids of each box, before assembly started.

Picton Kindergarten

The children have been busy planning ways we can develop our carpentry space with the addition of new tools and materials. From some creative brainstorming and discussions, the children wrote a wish list of materials to ask our community to donate for us to build and create with. The children, who are dedicated enviro-schools warriors, thought of materials that are essential for carpentry and also things we can reuse instead of putting in the trash. We hope you can help us out and donate items on this list.Nga mihi, Jo Huntley

When it was Cross Country I was as anxious as a mouse surrounded by a colony of cats. My heart was pounding like two boulders smashing together. I asked myself ‘shall I tread on’? Yes I shall, and it was ve hundreds kilometres long. My legs felt as slow and sleepy as a sloth. I was as hot as sand in the sun and on the way home it felt like I couldn’t run or move my legs at all.By Noah Burtenshaw

Yesterday it was Cross Country and I was nervous and the year four’s went rst and we had to run up a hill. I was already pued but I didn’t give up. I ran fast up the hill and didn’t get scared, I was condent. I ran through the bush and it was slippery. My heart was racing like dynamite boom, boom! My feet were burning and it was scary to see everything below me. It was so far down and if I fall I will be dead. I started to walk but never looked down. I slipped but that did not stop me. I ran as fast as I could to the nish line and I got an ice block at the end of the race. After that my friends Zav, Lennix and Connor played tag and every-one tagged me. I felt stupid but happy at the same time.By Ollie Hutchinson

When Mr Lampe said “Go!” my heart pounded as fast as a bullet. My legs were so tired they felt like they were going to fall asleep. My legs were as heavy as a dump truck. I was as tired as a turtle. I was as proud as an athlete. It was as slippery as ice. I was as muddy as a pig. When I went into the bush I felt nervous as someone starting school. When I got close to the end, I was tired with Andrew. I thought he was going to beat me, but I beat him.By Ollie Barclay

Bring on the compost

Plastic Bag Free Picton

By Rebekah Hall

Sustainance Picton and Plastic Bag Free Picton have joined forces in a Community initiative to help anyone in Picton set up their own compost heap. Why are we doing this?Nearly half our weekly household rubbish is made up of food and garden waste that could be returned to the soil. Food scraps in landll live there without oxygen, they cannot breathe or break down naturally causing water pollution and potent greenhouse gas methane. Methane gas is twenty-three times nastier than carbon dioxide, so we don’t want you putting your food scraps in the rubbish. These scraps are just what your garden needs! All you need to do is add these to your compost heap, together with some grass clippings, some cardboard (maybe your toilet roll inners) your left-over bits of paper and some coee grounds free from the cafes etc and you could make some nice compost for the garden or your pots. This is how the initiative works.A small group of volunteers will come to your garden and help you to get started: setting up your compost area, using materials you may have lying around to further reduce waste going to landll. Together with your help your compost “bin” is good to go in just a couple of hours. We have handy tips and advice on how to make your own beautiful compost, it is actually very easy!It is our hope that you then spread the word about how easy it is and help family and friends to do the same… and so it grows. This way the project will be self-sustaining, will spread out over town until we have heaps (Pardon the pun) of lovely compost. For those that, for whatever reason, cannot have a compost of their own, they could nd someone who has one and share. If you are interested in either volunteering your time to help build the compost heaps…no carpentry or building experience required or would like help in setting up your own heap please contact Rebekah at Sustainance Picton or Linda at Plastic Bag free Picton through facebook and messenger, or contact Rebekah at [email protected], 021564475 or Linda at [email protected], 0210638525.

August is Family History month. If you are a budding genealogist, check out the resources the library has to help you in your search, both on-line and on the shelf. The Heritage page on the Library website is a good place to start: https://www.marlboroughlibraries.govt.nz/heritage.

The Ancestry Library Edition database is also available in the library. It provides access to documents about individuals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and also has a range of New Zealand information.

In the Picton library biographies and autobiographies are shelved together in the 92 sequence at the beginning of the non-ction collection on the mezzanine oor.

Marlborough a second home for America’s Cup superyachtsMarlborough is being pitched as a destination for superyachts during the 2021 America’s Cup, which will be held in Auckland. Jacqui Lloyd, general manager for Destination Marlborough, the regional tourism organisation, presented its draft annual plan to councillors recently.Among a number of targeted activities a core part of the plan is working with other regional tourism organisations to leverage Marlborough’s investment in visitor attraction, Jacqui says. One example of this is the ‘SOUTH’ group of South Island regional tourism organisations, which are working with Christchurch Airport to bring international visitors through Christchurch and then on to the Top of the South.Another is the work being done with Auckland Council’s ATEED to encourage superyachts to travel to and around New Zealand. This is a “no-brainer” as Picton and the Sounds are a sailing centre and one of the most picturesque locations in New Zealand for super yachts, Jacqui says. The basis of Destination Marlborough’s work is that Marlborough is a compelling destination, and to build visitation in the shoulder periods outside the peak summer season.Business Events Marlborough, part of Destination Marlborough, has attracted $1.7million in conferencing and incentives in the past nancial year - the apiculture and aquaculture conferences here in July and September show the attraction of our region.

Waitohi Rugby Club Saturday 28th July 2018

After two weeks of school holidays and for some three weeks of no rugby, everyone is itching to get out there on the rugby eld.

Waitohi Sportsworld Under 6 Black: The U6 Black team played Central for their last home game of the season, excellent game played by all. These kids are even starting to side step during play and they show such great support between their team mates. Central played a strong defence and they also have some ripping machines! Each player has now scored a try and we are so incredibly proud of how far they have come. Thanks to Pete and Graham, they have done an amazing job this season training all the players.

Waitohi Sportsworld Under 6 Yellow: The sun was shining for the U6 Yellow team when they played Renwick in an action fuelled fast game. A few runaway tries were made by Waitohi with us taking home the win. What a way to end the last home game of the season. The amount of rips, tries and passes were fast and it was hard to keep up with these little ones. Their skill level has improved so much, they always try their best and it’s all we can ask for.

Waitohi Merv Scott Decorating Ltd Under 7: The U7s’ had such an awesome game, this team has come such a long way and we are so proud of them. It was a very quick game, everyone played a fantastically and gave it their all. Player of the Day went to Tyson, Louis, and Andrew for some outstanding play. All three had such a great game with awesome passing, rips, tries and team work, well done.

Picton Motordrome Waitohi Under 8: The U8’s carried on from where they left o with a huge win over Harlequins. The top try scorer was Zavier McDonald with six tries. Manu Mataele and Jaxon Watty both scored three, although Manu also scored a try playing for Harlequins in the second half. The only other player to score multiple tries was Frankie Taiapa. Sky Hopkinson who travels in each week from beyond the Kenepuru Heads was outstanding in defence often running down breaks, making a tackle and then getting to her feet and making a second. Overall this was an outstanding display of team work with players running in support and generally controlling the breakdown area. Look out for some future Makos here.

Waitohi Hi-Tech Automotive Under 9: Bye

Waitohi Under 10: The U10’s played Renwick green, another great second to last game for the season after having 2 weeks o. Coming away with a nice win 13-8 Parents Player of the Day choice was Malakai Riwaka Clarke and the Coaches pick was Liam Mana Healey.

Cont’d

Page 8: P1 15th August 2018 - pictonresource.co.nz · When Mr Lampe said “Go!” my heart pounded as fast as a bullet. My legs were so tired they felt like they were going to fall asleep.

Waitohi Coventry Cars Under 11: Bye

Waitohi Fresh Choice Under 13: The U13’s played against Neslon Stoke and had one of their best games of the season - everyone played really well and it was a great team eort by all. The nal score was 52-12 to Waitohi. Players of the Day were Koby McKenzie for the backs and Ben Millington for the forwards. Both played well and did themselves, their team and the Club proud. Try scorers were - Ben Millington, Keelen Hillgrove, Riley Boothman, Kaleb Wooley, Jack Quinn, Koby McKenzie, Mason Larrington and Finley Nielson (5) /Fin Somerville Smith (1) kicked the conversions - there were a couple of great team tries in this as well as some individual skills shining through. Thanks to all the parents and family who helped out with the after match feed and the team for getting the room set up and tidied up afterwards. Congratulations to Mason Larrington for his Give it a Go Award from Bayleys.

Saturday 4th August 2018 - Last game of the seasonWaitohi Sportsworld Under 6 Black: What a great game to end our 2018 rugby season! We had a blast with our nal game against Awatere in Seddon. Thank you to the kids that showed great sportsmanship and played with Awatere to make up the numbers. Also to Belinda and Manu for running on the eld with them. All of them have turned into ripping machines. The progress has been amazing to watch and we cant wait until next year.

Waitohi Sportsworld Under 6 Yellow: What a fantastic eort against Blenheim Harlequins. With a few awesome tries under their belt it was an awesome game to end the 2018 season. Both teams showed excellent defence and a huge thank you to Cli, Ben and David for running with the kids.

Waitohi Under 7: What an awesome way to end the club season for our U7 Junior Rangers. We are all beyond proud of this team for how far they have come, with their passing, ripping, holding defence and support play. Congratulations to Liam, Yana and Louis for an outstanding game and to the whole team for an awesome game.

Picton Motordrome Waitohi Under 8: Well it had to happen, the U8’s nally had an o game. They tackled well, they made plenty of breaks and controlled large portions of the game, but turnovers were costly and they struggled to transition from attack to defence. Renwick were able to score several run away tries at crucial times. All credit to Renwick, who earlier in the season had taken a shellacking from this Waitohi team, they played well and very intelligently, they were quick and eective at the breakdown.

Waitohi Hi-Tech Automotive Under 9: U9’s played a game that could have gone either way. Harlequins made a statement and scored three quick tries leaving Waitohi a little stunned. However, with some great passing and team work Waitohi scored bringing their condence back. It was a try for try game up until half time. Waitohi dominated in the second half, however leaving it a little late to take the win, with the nal score 11-10 to Harlequins. It was great to see some spectacular team work with passing the ball around, players putting in some good tackles, outstanding fending and breaks and most of all sportmanship. A very fustrating, but entertaining last game of the season. Players of the Day: Honehana, Soa and Ajani. Also an outstanding game by DJ, who had a position change.

Waitohi Under 10: The U10’s had an exciting nal game for the season against Moutere White and it was one of the best games to watch. Great team work and passing of the ball. Moutere kindly lent us one of their players for each half as we were down one player. Player of the Day picks were Harlem Stammers and Tana Hill. We nished the season with a win 13-8 to Waitohi.

Waitohi Coventry Cars Under 11: The U11’s met up with their counterparts Harlequins & Renwick in a head to head battle with a great display of grassroots rugby for the supporters that turned out in droves. Great sportsmanship from Harlequins for helping out both Renwick & Waitohi to make up teams of 15. What a great bunch of talented players. Players of the Day were Leilita Calthorpe, Tyreece Tepania, Pani Tawhi & Rheana Roberts -Bull. Thank you to our supporters who braved the cold and cheered for everyone.

Waitohi Fresh Choice Under 13’s: The U13’s played their last home game of the season against a strong Harlequins team, they lost 54 - 17. The rst half was a strong game by both sides, with the half time dierence at 2, the second half proved to be a little harder for the Waitohi boys - well done to them and their eorts, especially as they are down to 14 players to nish the season o. It was a big eort by both the forwards and backs. Players of the Day were Kaleb Wooley, Jack Quinn, Finley Nielson and Mason Larrington. Try scorers were Riley Boothman (2) and Koby Murrell (kindly played for us from Harlequins for the rst half ), try conversion was by Finley Neilson. Well done to all the boys, you all gave it your best and that is all your coaches can ask for.

Become a Marine Mammal MedicSunday 14th October 2018

Picton

Each year, hundreds of whales and dolphins strand on our shores. Whilst some are sick or injured, others are healthy and just need a helping hand back out to sea. But saving whales isn't as easy as it looks and successful rescue often depends on properly trained volunteers. That's where you come in.

You can become a Marine Mammal Medic with our one day course. It costs $120 ($85 for students with valid ID) and once trained you'll be added to our national callout list. That means that when a stranding occurs your lifesaving skills can be called upon.

To book your place visit www.projectjonah.org.nz/medic
