Like ce, nly Better

Ice is the time honored means o efectively delivering cryotherapy, but it does havedisadvantages. It can cause muscle stifness, skin irritation, temporary pain and numbness, and the need to remain stationary. Bioreeze Pain Reliever has been shown to be as efectiveas ice without these disadvantages.1

• USP-grade menthol as active ingredient• Simple and sae to apply during therapy, at home, or on-the-go• Efective, penetrating pain relie• Greaseless• Vanishing scent• Five convenient application ormats

In one study, patients with bilateral neck pain preerred Bioreeze over ice8-to-1. Nine out o 10 patients elt Bioreeze Pain Reliever was twice asefective and that relie lasted longer, compared to ice.2

Bioreeze Pain Reliever provides short-term pain relie that acilitates ease o movement, which can promote aster, long-term healing and recovery.

UseBiofreezePainReliever:• To control client’s pain during therapy• To treat pain at home or on-the-go• Beore exercise and/or therapy to promote pain-ree movement3

• Ater activity to sooth sore muscles and joints

Mechanism of ctionTraditional thinking is that the pain-relieving mechanism o action o menthol, the activeingredient in Bioreeze Pain Reliever, results rom a counter-irritant efect. A counter-irritantoverrides noxious pain signals traveling to the brain through a process modulated betweenpain-transmitting and non-pain transmitting neurons. This process, known as “gate control,”or “gating,” was rst described by Melzack and Wall.4

Introduction

WhatisGateControl? The Gate Control theory is based on the understanding that pain is transmitted bytwo kinds o aferent nerve bers.

1. A larger myelinated A-delta ber, which carries quick, intense-pain messages.2. A smaller, unmyelinated “C” ber, which transmits throbbing, chronic pain.

A third type o nerve ber, called A-beta, is “nonnociceptive,” meaning it does not transmitpain stimuli. The gate control theory asserts that signals transmitted by the A-delta and C painbers can be thwarted by the activation / stimulation o the nonnociceptive A-beta bers andinhibit an individual’s perception o pain.

TheMelzack-WallPainGateThe brain’s perception o pain depends on the interaction—within the laminae o the spinalcord—o C and A-delta nerve bers (pain-transmitting) with A-beta nerve bers (non-pain transmitting). Stimulating the A-beta nerve bers ultimately activates the inhibitory

interneuron and “closes the gate” to pain.

Massage Therapy TreatmentsPain Relieving Series using Bioreeze and Prossage

The ultimate goal in this user riendly protocol is to restore normal muscle resting lengths toopposing muscle groups o the orearm, wrist, and hand. The enhanced benet is achievingthat goal in a pain ree ashion, by using a product that enhances sot tissue release at thehighest level possible. Sot tissue balance will eliminate the majority o the causes o tendonand joint pain in the orearm, wrist and hand.

Contrainications:• Skin rashes or conditions • Open sores• Inections • Fractures o the area• Recent surgeries

Procts use in reatment:• Prossage Oil• Bioreeze Spray or Gel

reatment Protocol

1. The client is in supine position, with the orearm up to work on the short, tight exors othe orearm, wrist, and hand rst. These muscles are usually short and tight due to normalday-to-day activities. By working on the exors and pronators rst, you can relax theantagonists, which are the extensors and supinator o the orearm or greater benets inmanual therapy.

2. To enhance the benets o myoascial release to the orearm muscles add a ew dropso Prossage Oil to the palm o your hand. Enhance the warming efect by rubbing thehands together with rapid palmer riction or about 2-3 seconds. This will minimize glideto hook the deep investing ascia.

3. Start with deep pain ree myoascial spreading, working the orearm exors rom origin to

insertion (elbow to hand) at 45° angles, to create normal muscle resting length.

4. Due to the incredible viscosity o Prossage, you can expand the retinaculum, giving thetendons, nerves, and blood vessels more space in the carpal tunnel o the wrist.

5. Continue to hook the deep investing ascia as you open the hand and move the bones othe hand to work the deep sot tissue layers rom the inside out.

6. Traction the wrist to decompress the carpal bones.

7. Do deep myoascial spreading to release the ascial layers o the strong muscle groupsthat attach to the thumb. You may want to apply another drop or two o Prossage to thehand at this point.

8. Slide distal on each nger applying slight traction to decompress each joint.

9. Have the client extend their wrist and hand, and assist in stretching the muscles o the

orearm and hand. These muscles are short and tight due to prolonged activity, such asworking on computers. This stretch will also relax the extensors o the arm which areusually weak antagonists o the tight exors.

10. Work with deep gliding strokes rom the medial epicondyle to the attachment on theradial bone to restore length.

11. Have the client turn the palm up (supinate) as you assist stretching the pronator muscles. This will also relax the usually weak and inhibited supinator muscles.

12. Apply more Prossage Heat as needed. Enhance the warming efects by rubbing your handstogether with rapid palmer riction or about 2-3 seconds and apply to the extensormuscles o the arm.

13. Work the extensors with slow deep myoascial spreading, moving rom the wrist to theelbow to urther relax the extensors. Remember your goal is to lengthen the orearmexors and relax the antagonistic extensor.

14. When you bring opposing muscle groups back to their normal muscle resting lengths(lengthen short muscles and relax weak, inhibited, or overstretched antagonists) you willeliminate the majority o the myoascial and neuromuscular pain patterns. You will alsoeliminate the majority o tendon pain problems.

15. Finish this treatment by using Bioreeze Pain Reliever in the areas that you worked to helpreduce any residual pain.

Procts use in reatment:• Massage Oil• Bioreeze Gel• Prossage Oil

reatment Protocol:

1. With the client seated on the side o the massage table, assess thair active cervicalrange o motion and have them indicate the area o most discomort. Place the clientin the supine position on the massage table. The treatment should ocus on the area(s)o most discomort. By having the client move through all cervical ranges o motion, beore you begin treatment, you help them relate to any soreness or restriction o rangeo motion. Have them repeat the cervical range o motion ater treatment so they can eel

the efectiveness o the treatment.2. Add a ew drops o Prossage to the palm o your hand. Rub palms together briskly.

Only use a ew drops to prevent the hands rom slipping over the tissue.

3. The rst stroke is a myoascial stroke to gently stretch the skin o the upper back andposterior cervical area. Slide both hands down the client’s mid thoracic area on eitherside o the paraspinals and bring up slowly. Repeat three times.

4. Feathering techniques are perormed by applying pressure with nger tips at the spinousprocess o C7 and moving outward to the transverse process o the posterior cervicalvertebrae. Start at C7 and work up to the suboccipital area. Repeat three times.

5. Stripping strokes are applied rom the sub occipital area along the lamina groove to C7 oneach side o the spinous processes. As you perorm the stripping strokes, you can stopat any point where a tender spot is located and hold or 8-12 seconds. With direct pressure,

tenderness should change rom sharp to dull as you hold the tender spot. Apply strippingstrokes rom occipital ridge down the cervical spine to C7. Repeat three times.

6. Apply direct thumb pressure to paraspinals in lamina groove. This technique is done totreat the specic areas o tenderness. Hold or 8-12 seconds. Repeat three times.

7. This stroke is called the A/O release. The therapists place their ngers just below theoccipital bone to soten the tissue between the atlas and occiput. I this causes client pain, skip this technique.

Massage Therapy TreatmentsSpecialty Treatment

This protocol is or those massage therapists who are currently using hot and cold stoneswith deep tissue application. Your client will have a unique experience when you are ableto bring in hydrotherapy principles with the use o hot and cold stones combined with deeptissue massage and Prossage Heat. They will relax quickly with the heat, which will initiatethe healing process sooner. Follow with the application o the cold stones, which will assistin pumping toxins out o the tissue and will bring a sense o balance and well being into thetreatment. You will be able to work deeper with less discomort to your client.

Contrainications:• Blood pressure medications (consult physician)• Blood thinners (consult physician)

Procts use in reatment:• Prossage Oil• Bioreeze Gel

• Both hot and cold stones

reatment Protocol

Overview• Strokes with the stones are an extension o your hand.• The lower back will use medium to large stones. The upper back will use small to medium stone.• The strokes with a hot stone are rm and ast.• The strokes with a cool stone are rm and slow.• As the heat dissipates, the pace will slow down, but the pressure will remain rm.

1. Start client in the prone position. Apply a minimal amount o Prossage to the entire back.

2. Look at the back in quadrants: lower let, lower right, upper let, and upper right.3. Start with the lower let quadrant o the back. Using the basic massage strokes, introduce

the heated stone gradually.

4. Move to the lower right quadrant.

5. With the smaller stones, work the upper let, then upper right quadrants o the back.

6. I more lubricant is needed, apply it directly to the stone.

7. Make sure to wipe of excess oil of beore applying Bioreeze.

8. Next we will introduce the cold stone by applying a minimal amount o Bioreeze to theback. This will bring the client back to balance.

Step 9

44 Massae herapy reatment Manal

9. Begin on the upper back with a stone in both hands.

10. Apply the cool stones to the upper back with pressure and allow the body to adjust to the

temperature. Move rm and slow.11. Remember, when working the back, start with hot stones in the lower quadrants rst, and

then work the upper back. With cold stones, start in the upper quadrants rst, and thenwork the lower back.

pecial otes:I you work with the philosophy that less is more, you will most likely work within a sae range. You can always increase pressure or temperature. But i you injure or lose a client’s trust, thedamage is done and their trust may be dicult to regain. On elderly clients, use less heat andless cold. They tend not to have enough muscle mass to tolerate as much heat as much cold. When working with temperature, most contraindications are amplied.

bot Hot tones:One o the main concerns working with temperature is applying it within the client’s tolerance.I you work too deeply or with too much heat, the client will not have condence, which isessential or the healing process to start. Prossage is a good way to introduce heat to thetreatment or new clients. Whenever you use heat in a treatment or new clients you wantit to be introduced gradually; heat receptors will adjust to take more heat as the treatmentprogresses. You cannot take back what is done, so you do not want our client to react and putup their guard. Working with a hot stone, the pressure and pace o the stone will dictate thetemperature and your client will be able to adjust. The hotter the stone the aster the pace.

bot Col tones:Cool application is essential in balancing, and the cool stones always ollow the heat. Within a

basic session ormat, you might want to consider two diferent options. I you are looking ora toning efect to the muscle, a ew drops o Prossage could be appropriate with a cold stone.I you are looking or a calming efect, a cold stone would be suggested or the use o BioreezeGel. You will nd that your clients will accept the cool stones better i they are applied withrm pressure during an exhale. Ater your client accepts the temperature change, the pace isslow and rm. In brie, stone massage is what you make o it. I you are working rom a solid oundation, the stone becomes an extension o your hand. Then, with a good understanding on howtemperature afects the body, be it hot or cold, it has the ability to enhance almost anytreatment. When you are working with temperature, please work within your abilities andrespect the tolerance o your clients.
