This is a guide to help you repair your own Plasma TV.

First, to get you familiar, with the Boards inside a Plasma TV

Share

LG 60″ Plasma TV

You will find that most Plasma TV’s have this board setup.

Va is an short for the Address supply Voltage. Vs is short for Sustain supply Voltage. These are the primary supplies to “run” the plasma panel. You could say V-address and V-sustain.

01–Common Failure of Boards Plasma Power Board 1)- No full start-up, relay clicking-

2)- Relay clicks once then shuts down into protection mode-(red standby power light)

)- Relay clicks in cycles, then goes to protection mode-

Page 3: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

4)-No relay click, stuck in standby only

5)- Dead no picture, no sound, no standby light

6)-Turns off after 10 or 20 minutes

7)- Turns on, immediate shut down

8)-TV, turns on, no picture, no sound.

9)- Clicking on/off, on/off

10)- No Power

11)- No 5 Volt

12)-Black Screen, Red flashing standby light-Capacitors

13)-Flashing red power light

14)- FOUND - MISSING Vs AND Va from power supply changing 50n50 mosfet and 2.2 ohm resistor in power supply solved the problem

15)- If power light continually blinks, that’s a No power to the Y-sus board failure.

16-) POWER SUPPLY Main symptoms are: Flashing Pixels on the screen. Turn ON, but no Video & Sound. No Power. No power light on front panel. Hard to turn ON. Turn ON after a long period of time. Sometimes takes 30 minutes or so. Turn ON, but turns OFF automatically. These faults are related to the Main Power Regulator board

Page 4: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

Signs that the caps have blown on Power Board and need

replacing are:

Bulged / domed on top or underneath (Most common sign!)

Black fluid leaking from top

Discoloration

Clicking noise from inside TV

Buzzing noise

Intermittent power to TV (Turning itself off after time) Loud POP– The common symptom with plasma TV is after a pop sound, screen goes black but sound is still on. With this problem the usual fault is what they call as sustain board. But in your case, its a dead set. The most probable fault is within the power supply circuit. The pop sound could be from a semiconductor overheating and eventually burnt or an electrolytic capacitor blowing up. Any burnt smell? There are instances where the fuse doesn’t blow because the fault is so fast, say in a few milliseconds.

02–Plasma Main Board Failure 1)- No sound

2)- No picture but has Menu display

3)- Intermittent sound

4)- No video from input

5)- Picture distorted

6)- Grey colored screen

7)- Snow Picture or static

03–Plasma X-Y-Z Sustain Board Failure 1)- Screen cuts on and off

Page 5: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

2)- Startup then shuts down

3)- Colored Pixels on screen

4)- Dark image

5)- Sound, no video

6)- Horizontal lines

7)- Vertical colored lines

8)- X buffers, those create black vertical bars.

9)- If power light continually blinks, that’s a No power to the Y-sus board failure.

10)- Flashing pixels on screen. Have audio but no video. Vertical color lines on screen. Vertical Bars on screen. Vertical color lines along with video. Picture goes Red predominant after a while. Horizontal lines on image. Dark image. TV turns ON, and shut down. Negative image. Screen goes black, and come on with picture. All the above faults are related to either X,Y or Z sustain boards. These boards look different to models to models, and manufacturer.

04–Plasma Buffer Board Failure 1)- No video, has sound

2)- Black vertical Bars

3)- Different size vertical lines

4)- Horizontal lines

05–Plasma Logic Board Failure 1)- Only Left or Right side of screen working

Page 6: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

2)- No video, has sound

3)-No menu display

4)- Vertical and horizontal lines

5)- Part of screen distorted

Logic Board Failures– Scrambled lines and patterns on top of menu screen, jumping picture-Logic Board Picture scrambles after a few minutes, when TV is turned on-Logic Board– Menu scrambled with fuzzy picture-Logic Board– Ghosting image with a lot of noise on screen-Logic Board

Pull up the OSD Menu-(On Screen Display) If the distortion or lines appear on top of menu, the cause is a 95% bad panel.

Test– Disconnect all signal sources. If distortion is still over the OSD Menu, check LVDS Cable contacts (clean) or change Main Board-

My LG 42LM620T blew the power board, have replaced it but the red led just flashes 4 times then goes out, nothing else happens, TV dead. Bent pin on connector

White Lines– There are several possibilities that can cause white lines on an lcd screen. One would be high temperature on the logic board. Logic board drives the LCD panel and when it overheats can cause this display problem. One solution would be to clean the vent holes around the TV. One possibility that I have experienced myself servicing is a bloated capacitor on the power supply board. The worst possibility is a defective LCD panel, which is costly to repair, and sometime more practical to buy a new TV set.

No green led light on Logic Board Repair- Replaced Logic Board Magnavox 50MF231D Symptom-Plasma TV has sound but black screen. I noticed the connection to the ribbon cable is loose could this be the problem if so how can i fix it? A loose ribbon/flex cable is a prime suspect with that problem. The ribbon wire is usually held on by a locking lever on the mating connector Try reseating the flex, taking it off then plugging it back. Be cautious ribbon cable can easily bend and brake.Just to mention that model has a history of bulging capacitor failure.

Magnavox 50MF231D Plasma TV-

Panasonic 50″ Viere Plasma TV Symptom- No Sound

Repair- Unplug cable box for 5 seconds, also unplug TV, for 10 minutes, hold power button for 60 seconds. Plug in turn on

RCA 42 INCH PLASMA Why my RCA 42 INCH PLASMA DOES NOT SHOW ANY PICTURE WHEN I PUT THE POWER BUTTON ON IT JUST CLICKS THREE TIMES AND THE BLUE LIGHT STAYS ON The problem is in the power board. Some components may have failed and that’s causing your TV to act that way. Most probably it’s a capacitor. You can inspect it visually. Bad capacitors can be identified by looking at the top. The top may pop out a bit. Or perhaps a crack that you can see some solid silver like material coming out of the crack. You can either replace the component that is bad or replace the whole board, whichever is convenient

Samsung PS51E6500 Plasma TV Symptom- It stopped working. The screen turned black, the Smart TV logo came up for about half a second. The screen stays completely black and it doesn’t react to anything, including changing channels, opening the menu, etc. The sound, however, does work. Repair- Replace Main Board Samsung PS-50C96HD Plasma TV Symptom- red won’t switch on just clicks , no obviously blown capacitors Repair- Replace Power Board

Samsung PS51E6500 3D Plasma TV Symptom- TV made quite a loud bang and the screen seemed to turn

off and does not display anything on any source. Repair- Blown Disc Capacitor on Y-Sustain Board. Replaced Y-Sustain Board, Upper, Lower Buffers, No success. Replaced Z-Sustain Board, Power Board. No success- Gut feeling put in old Upper Buffer, TV works fine-

08–Capacitor Replacement If your Plasma TV, has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following symptoms, then it’s time for some new capacitors

- Flickering screen

- Screen image disappears after several seconds

- Dim screen

- Slow start

- Power LED on, but no picture

- Unusual colors and/or lines

LG Plasma TV turns itself off and on after watching it.

Repair-Plasma Power Board

Sometimes we only have to watch it for a few minutes, other times it will go days without turning off–

Common with LG Plasmas-

Repair–Replace Main Board

09–Power Board

Page 15: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

The Power Board supply, needs to be working correctly, and the Logic Board, has to be making the panel switch from pitch black to a subtle gray light level.

Main Board The main board...it’s the one that turns on the logic board. Then the logic board turns on the Y-Sustain and X-Sustain....sends signals to it to make it turn on and make the plasma panel gray...it also makes it turn off too. If your screen is black, it’s Power Board, Y-Sustain Board or Z-Sustain Board. If you power up TV, and you get a subtle gray screen, then it’s, Y-Sustain Board or Z-Sustain Board

10–Y-Sustain Board If the Y sustain is bad, you cannot have a completely blue screen. It will either be a bad picture, no picture or dead. It has nothing to do with the sound, unless buffers are shorted. Loud POP– The common symptom with plasma TV is after a pop sound, screen goes black but sound is still on.

Common Y-Sustain Board Failure 1)- Blows or Pops, smells like a fire cracker. 2)- No picture or distorted picture 3)- Distorted picture, or colored snow. 4)- TV flashing white screen about every second and a ticking sound 5)- TV comes up, display is dark, there may or may not be sound. If no sound, suspect Buffers 6)- TV clicks on and quickly back off 7)- clicks on and shortly after back off, then after a short pause tries again Here are some symptoms of Y-Sustain board failure– 1)-TV on, screen primed with no picture

Page 16: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

2)-Brief picture, then TV on with no picture 3)-Picture on then off at start up 4)-TV on, no picture, then shuts down 5)-Audio on, no picture 6)-TV on, no picture, primed screen only Lg Plasma reset- If the red light is blinking in front of the TV and the TV does not switch on. Then remove the back power cable from the TV. Press the on/off switch on the side so that you drain all the residual power. Plug back the power cable. Switch on the TV using remote control. Once you see the green light press the channel ( ) button do not let it go until the TV switch`s on. This process will bypass the traditional power to switch on the TV instead the TV will be switched on using the TV channel power to the TV

11–Z-Sustain Board

1)- The picture is slow to update (motion blur)

2)- Has a purple tinge to it.

3)- Foggy

4)- Half of the screen may be distorted more than the other half

5)- This is in about 95% of cases the Z-sustain

6)- Dim Picture on Screen

Z-Sustain Board Kit content: -6 Power IGBT Transistors -12 surface mount resistors -1 fuse Fixes following symptoms: Will not turn on, No picture or Blown Fuse

-Z-Sus board not working -Blown fuse

Page 17: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

-TV has sound no picture When turned off, you hear a zap

12–X-Sustain Board- ( buffers at bottom of panel) Always cause black

vertical bars If your Plasma Screen, has lines on the screen, going from left to right

Suspect Logic Board, Control Board

Thin black horizontal lines on most Plasma TV’s is an indication of a bad board known as a x driver board. Their may be a slight possibility it can be a small ribbon cable that runs from the driver board to the plasma panel. Another possibility it can be a bad panel. If your lines keep getting worse, suspect a bad ribbon cable.

13–No Picture- Involves most boards on a plasma TV. If you have sound, more than likely it’s not your Power Board, it’s more than likely, your Y-Sustain or Z-Sustain Board.

How to find out-

First, unplug TV, press power button for 10 seconds. This is to discharge capacitors. Locate Power source, or wire cable to Y-Sustain Board, disconnect wire cable. Disconnect at Power Board side, so wire cable cannot short to back Panel. Make sure your hooked up for sound. Plug in TV. Does your TV come on with sound? If not, unplug TV, hold power button for 10 seconds. Leave Y-Sustain cable disconnected, and then disconnect Z-Sustain Board wire cable, at Power Board side. Plug in TV, does your TV turn on with sound? If not suspect Logic Board, Main Board-

Power the TV on.

Turn on the TV, hold the VOL- button.

Press the numeric zero button three times on the remote in quick succession.

Wait approximately 10 seconds.

Press the red button on the remote control twice.

A pattern should appear. Press red again to cycle through each.

Then power the TV off.

flashing dots all over the screen ( milky way) adjustment VSET on y sus - works but 50 % of dots still there other adjustments on y sus board — no help at all. changed 053b y sus board — same problem. changed logic control —– bingo

Here are some of the most common failures of a plasma power board.

No power–This indicates that the power board, in the TV, is not powering up at all. The quick fix is that it could be simply that the fuse is blown or bulged capacitors.

Hard to turn on–capacitors on power board possible main board

Turn on after 20 minutes—No power light on front panel–Turn on and immediately shuts down (bad capacitors on power board, missing VS on power board)

Flashing pixels on screen–Turn on no video no sound, bad optocoupler in power supply

Here are the three main manufactures of plasma tv’s power supply failure—

15–Samsung power supply failure:

• Stuck in standby, clicking noise

• Picture going off when set warms up

• Dead / No standby light / fuse blown

• Standby light flashing, no power up

• Takes a long time to come out of standby

16–Panasonic power board failure:

• My Panasonic plasma will not turn on

Page 20: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

• Red light blinks seven times

• What is wrong with my Panasonic plasma

• The blinking red light of death

• Faulty power supply on Panasonic plasma

17–LG power supply failure: FAULTS

• The screen lights for only few seconds then goes into standby with a clicking noise.

• The TV is stuck in standby when you try to switch it on it tries but then just clicks and goes back to standby

– Fault–

• Takes along time to switch on

• Not switching on

• Stuck in standby

Thin vertical Line

If it is a thin vertical line that appears on certain video resolution/image then it is normal and is indicated in the users manual under troubleshooting. If the line is almost half the screen, it could be a problem with the cable connection between the LCD panel and logic board, or the LCD panel itself. Try reseating the cable first if it’ll solve the problem.

If your Plasma TV has stopped working, or is displaying one of the following symptoms, then it’s a candidate for some new capacitors

- Flickering screen

- Screen image disappears after several seconds

- Dim screen

Page 21: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

- Slow start

- Power LED on, but no picture

- Unusual colors and/or lines

Green tint plasma

My 50inch Hitachi plasma has greenish tint!

Go into the menu of TV and turn the color control all the way to zero. Is the picture black and white or does it still have a green tint? If it is black and white it’s not your TV–

Pink Plasma Screen LG plasma on HDMI picture turning pink intermittently. It is a incompatibility issue with HDMI, and with LG plasma. Try to connect via the composite or component input if the issue persist. Lg Plasma reset- If the red light is blinking in front of the TV and the TV does not switch on.

Plasma TV Reset 1)- Turn the TV on 2)- While it is on unplug the Cable box from the wall 3)- Let it sit 5 minuts 4)-Plug it back in.

18–Thin Black Vertical Line(s) Vertical line(s) is an indication of a bad board known as a x driver board. Board usually located at bottom of panel. There could be possible 2 or 3 buffers. Their may be a slight possibility it can be a small ribbon cable that runs from the driver board to the plasma panel. Another possibility it can be a bad panel... but from the symptoms you describe I would first have to look at that driver board. and the symptom that getting worse makes me lean toward a bad ribbon cable.. if that could be reseated.... Careful Television generate dangerous voltages.

Colored Vertical lines-

A thin vertical line down the screen, which does not change with the picture content or aspect, can be caused only by two causes.

First the most common one would be a failure of the corresponding TCP IC, This is the drive IC that is inside of the ribbon cable for that specific area of the panel. (Optional as to what Make and Model)

This is not a replaceable part, it is bonded with the plasma panel in the manufacturing process.

Second possible failure is one of the Ctrl boards(corresponding the affected area in the picture). This failure is a lot more rare than the plasma panel(TCP IC) and most of the time will affect a larger area, that will create a larger error on the screen, more like a strip ,than a line! About 90% of the cases it turns out to be the plasma panel.

Page 23: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

If the lines move and are slowly increasing over the entire screen, it’s most likely your ctrl buffers are bad.

If they were stationary and non-moving, that would have been the plasma panel.

If line or lines on top of menu display, then it’s panel or the ctrl buffers on the panel are bad

Permanent non-changing lines usually points to panel, changing lines point to bad ctrl buffer boards

19–Troubleshooting Your Plasma TV All Plasmas TV’s

No Picture and No Sound:

First 1)-Unplug TV, for 5 minutes. 2)-Hold power button for 60 seconds 3)-Unplug the wire cable, going into the Z-sustain and then plug the TV back in. 4)-Check for sound. If there’s sound, then the problem is with the Z-sustain. Next- 1)-Unplug TV, for 5 minutes. Hold power button for 60 seconds 2)-Then disconnect the Y-sustain and re-connect the Z-sustain. 3)-Plug the TV back in and check for sound. If there’s sound, then the problem is with the Y-sustain.

If the problem is Y-Sustain, you need to check out the buffer(s). 1)-Unplug the TV and wait 5 minutes. Hold power button for 60 seconds 2)-Remove the upper buffer and see if you get 1/2 of a picture with sound, on bottom 1/2 of screen. 3)-If you have 2 buffers, connect the top buffer, and disconnect the

Page 24: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

bottom buffer. See if you get a picture on the upper 1/2 of screen. 5.If you can see a picture, you know that the board you removed is the problem. Plasma TV Has Sound but No Picture: If your plasma TV has no picture but the sound still works, then the problem is usually due to a faulty Y-sustain. it could just be a blown fuse, which is easily replaceable. But if not, you might have to replace the entire Y-sustain

If you are stuck with flashing red standby power light, or red standby power light, try this first-The idea of the steps below are to get your TV to turn on. Not necessary with picture, but with sound. So when you do this, have cable hooked up to receive sound.

First try this reset, at least twice.

TV Reset- Unplug TV from wall plug for 10 minutes, then press and hold power button on TV for 60 seconds–Plug in turn on– If this fails, suspect internal failure.

Next, unplug TV. Next, hold power button for 5 seconds.

Now watch the screen, plug in TV, turn on. Does your TV, light up to a subtile grey, or does it stay black.

If screen lights up, suspect Y-Sustain or Z-Sustain. If screen remains black, suspect, Y, Z Sustain or Power Board.

The next step, is to get your TV to turn on.

This is where we disconnect Y-and Z Sustain Board, from Power Board. Y-Sustain could be getting power supply from Z-Sustain Board. In this case just disconnect Z-Sustain Board. Plug in TV. Does TV come on with sound. If it does, one of them has failed. Hook up Z-Sustain Board, and if TV turns on suspect Y-Sustain Board. Reverse this and see what yo get.

Page 25: P TV------------ ------- C P M 9925072772

If LG, watch for small green led on Logic Board. If no success, suspect Power Board

If still no success, suspect Power Board.

First thing to do is check fuse(s) if weak or burnt.

To be absolutely sure, Voltage testing has to be done.

20–Testing Power Supply Board Try this- There is actually a fairly easy and certain way to test this particular power supply board: disconnect all cables from it except the main AC power supply cable, then connect the board to AC power. A good board will click once and all output voltages will become present, including the Vs voltage which can be measured on the connector at the upper right corner of the board; upon disconnecting from AC the board will click once more, turning the relays off. Upon connecting to AC a bad power will either remain dead or click once and then quickly once again, when shutting itself off when the built-in protection activates. Also go to VS Pin, on Power Board connectors. Do this for both Y, Z, Sustain board connectors. Put ground to back panel or small hole in panel. Set meter to diode. Put red probe to VS pin. Do you get a beep?

Also-

Do this with NOTHING connected to the Power supply but AC power. If a voltage is missing/ fluctuating, then the power board needs to be replaced.

21–Panel Failure Panel - No power, distorted picture, lines, slow motion, half screen, faded in / out.

Panel problems are usually not worth replacing the panel.

Panel Failure Dark Image on Screen Burn in- image from previous channel Turn on shuts down Flashing red dots, when cold Intermittent change of colors or brightness Another important thing to know is if the lines only go partially down the screen, or if they completely go from the top to the bottom. Permanent non-changing lines usually point to the panel, but changing lines point to a bad buffer. The menu is behind the lines= panel failure

Activate your TV’s menu and see if the lines intersect the menu. If they do, does it look like the lines are on top of the menu, or the menu is on top of the lines? After looking at the menu, lines are on top of the menu. OK, we are down to the Plasma panel or the video buffers on the panel are bad. These lines, are they always lit, or do they flicker, change colors, or disappear at all?

22–Green tint plasma My 50inch Hitachi plasma has greenish tint! Go into the menu of TV and turn the color control all the way to zero. Is the picture black and white or does it still have a green tint? If it is black and white it’s not your TV– Had pink distortion. Adjusted VS screw clockwise by a tiny amount...Perfect picture.

Red fuzzy band in the middle–Try increasing the vs by a couple of volts to see if that would make any difference.

Z-Sustain Board Failure

Troubleshooting Y-Sustain Boards With Y-Sustain disconnected TV turns on. This means either Y-Sustain and or buffers bad. With buffers disconnected, and TV will not come on, this means Y-Sustain is Bad. You replaced Y-Sustain Board with buffers connected and ended up that TV would not turn on. So- What happened was that you have either upper or lower buffer damage, that shorted out your new Y-Sustain Board again. So, to fix this you need to replace the Y-Sustain Board and both upper and lower buffers. When testing Y Boards, disconnecting Buffers from Y-Sus board and TV turns on, then we just replace the buffers.
