MASTERWOOD has been pro-ducing woodworking machinesfor over 50 years, helping thefurniture, casing and joineryindustry with its passion andprofessionalism.

The Masterwood brand was bornin 1990 out of the merger of twocompanies: Muti, a leader in the pro-duction of oscillating chisel mortis-ing machines and Zangheri &Boschetti, specialists in the produc-tion of automatic multi boring ma-chines. Under the new banner thededicated development and build-ing of CNC machinery has flourished.

The synergy of experience andknow-how brought in by eachpartner soon led Masterwood tobecome one of the reference com-panies, producing numeric controlmachining centres for both panelsand solid wood, exporting morethan 80% of its production to allsix continents of the world.

Following extensive negotiationsMasterwood Spa has announced anew partnership with the leadingChinese woodworking machinemanufacturer, Guang zhou KDT

Machinery Co Ltd. The new part-nership will allow Masterwood tosell its products into the Chinesemarket with the help of KDT.

Investment into the Master-wood Group will allow the devel-opment of new technologies.Work has already started at the Ri-mini site, where a large unit isbeing added to the current manu-facturing works; this will givegreater space for producing notjust standard CNC machines, butthe growing demand on ‘special’production machines. Many ofthese are with automated feedsand are often designed and built

to suit a customer’s bespoke man-ufacturing requirements.

The new agreement retainsGiancarlo Muti as the companyCEO and Matteo Muti as CFO.

Further big developments arealready under way regarding newmachines, with ‘specials’ on theway for door frame and windowproduction markets, plus the on-going software developments.Look out for the company at manyleading shows, including W18Masterwood GB LtdTel 01293 402700Email [email protected]

HIDE and Stitch are a Cambridge-based company with over 25 years’experience making bespoke furniture in leather, cowhide, wood andmetal for individuals and commercial customers across the country. All of the work is created at the fully equipped workshop where thecompany is able to do leatherwork, upholstery, woodworking, metalwork or paint finishes on the amazing pieces created.

In 2004, managing director, David Motley was running his companyfrom his garage at home when he decided to visit Felder’s In HouseExhibition with a view to purchasing the horizontal mortiser. David com-mented, “I went to purchase a Felder FD 250 horizontal mortiser andwhilst I was there I saw all the other machinesand decided to buy a Felder CF 731 combina-tion machine, which was great when we startedout,” going on to say, “As my company devel-oped, the way we decided to move forward wasto get a bigger unit and buy separate machines,so we bought the premises we are in today andupgrade to separate Format-4 machines.”

Since then David has gone on to purchase 10machines from the Felder Group including aFormat-4 kappa 550 e-motion panel saw.

Recommending some of the features Davidadded to his saw, he said, “When you are work-ing with manually-indexed woodworking ma-chines there is more room for error, when youhave a digital read out on the outrigger and ripfence it’s brilliant. When you are doing really ac-curate work like mitre work it has to be perfector you are going to get a gap, so I would rec-ommend upgrading to anyone. Within a monthyou will realise it is the right choice and it savesso much time, which is your biggest assetwithin your business, if you can save a minute

here or 10 minutes there, over the course of a year that’s a lot of money.”Speaking about his experience of Felder, he said, “I’ve not had a prob-

lem with one machine, I will buy a machine from Felder because I wantthe machine. Even though there isn’t anything I need, I still have a look tosee what I can buy. The only reason I change machines is because I like tohave a new model, it’s not down to the fact a machine wears out and theyhave such an amazing residual value as well. If you invest at the start youwill get your money out at the end.”Felder-Group UKTel 01908 635000 l www.felder-group.co.uk

CRISPIN and Gemma FurnitureDesign, of Marlborough, Wilt-shire, is a specialist cabinetmakers and specialist kitchenmanufacturer established 25years ago. The team of four spe-cialises in “things you can’t getanywhere else”, Crispin Forstertold Panel, Wood & Solid Surface:“one off and unusual designs, from super modern to extremelytraditional.” The company bene-fits significantly from repeatbusiness with clients with whomit has a good relationship.

In the Summer of 2017, Crispinneeded to upscale his production. To do this, he purchased a Wood-welder and a clamping system fromAlan Lamont of Lamont Clamping.

“A long standing commercialcustomer contacted us with a bigcontract, which involved a lot ofhardwood frame and door con-struction for bars and commercialkitchens, in sapele, ash and beech. We already had a full order book,so we needed to completelychange our methods of manufac-ture for this contract. The CNCwork was outsourced, but all theframes were made in house. Theyhad to be separately constructedand we had to know they would fittogether perfectly. The Lamont

system was really helpful as itkeeps everything square. It wasvery important it was really, reallyaccurate and that the guys in theworkshop could use it with mini-mal training.

“I chose Lamont because of theclamping system he sold, and be-cause of his phone manner. Alanhas a big variety of differentclamping systems and you couldsee he had really thought aboutapplications. He knew the indus-try and knew what was required, and I was impressed with the qual-ity. It was obvious he was a spe-cialist, as soon as you start talkingto him you know he knows whathe is talking about and offers verygood guarantees.

“We use the clamping systemand Woodwelder a lot for paneldoor manufacturing and also forworktop manufacturing and, whilethe Woodwelder cannot be used forall worktops, for example oilierwoods such as Iroko, it is very goodfor tulipwood, for example. How-ever, really heavy worktops can beleft in the clamp overnight: and theclamping system really is a panacea!

“The Woodwelder, which wasvery well priced, is very, very goodfor panel door and frame con-struction, as well as for dovetail

drawers. We try and do as much aswe can on it, to be honest, as it iseasy to use. And with the Wood-welder, glue dries in minutesrather than hours. This is a signifi-cant time saver.

“Everyone in the workshop is anaccomplished cabinet maker andcan think for themselves, so we arecontinually improving our methodsof working. One great advantage ofthe new system is that, if you arecareful, you can clean the glue offthe reverse side before it is com-

pletely dry. With traditional clamp-ing methods, this is not possible.”

When asked if he would recom-mend the clamping system, theWoodwelder and the company,Crispin replied: “I would highly rec-ommend it! I am very happy withthe purchase and should havedone it 15 years ago: that is myonly regret.”LamontTel 01461 40017Email [email protected]

WOODWASTE & DUST CONTROL

WEST Midlands furniture manufacturer, Lugo Group Europe, has eliminated unnecessary heating and waste disposal bills for its 30,000 ft2

factory in Walsall and increased its environmental credentials by investing in a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. For over 15 years Lugo Group Europe has designed and manufactured high quality, be-

spoke environmentally friendly furniture for the hospitality industry. The decision makers at Lugo Group Europe realised investing in a wood waste heater

would help them freely dispose of wood waste whilst also saving money on heating, as theyno longer need to run the current gas heaters that the business relied on to keep the factorywarm during the cold winter months.

With the business situated in a smoke control area, head of group production, MartinWilliams, searched the internet to find out more about clean air friendly biomass solutionsand discovered the range of heaters on offer from Wood Waste Technology.

Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engi-neers installed a WT15 wood waste heater into the factory late last year.

Martin Williams explains: “Kurt Cockroft and the team at Wood Waste Technology providedus with really helpful advice regarding our factory being based in a smoke control area, and howto comply with these guidelines. We are delighted with our wood waste heater. It is perfect forour business needs, and the team at Wood Waste Technology delivered everything promised.”

Managing director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, said: “It has been a pleasurehelping Lugo Group Europe save money whilst further reducing its carbon footprint.”

DUST CONTROL Systems Ltd hassupplied and installed a newexternally-sited dust extractionfilter unit for longstanding cus-tomer David Urquhart Joiners.

Located on the north facingcoast of Aberdeenshire, just acouple of miles to the west of Port-soy and opposite GlenglassaughDistillery, the company specialisesin the manufacture of custom-made doorsets, for both internaland external application, and be-spoke or standard specificationstaircases. Established almost 30years ago, the business continuesto be managed by owner DavidUrquhart, along with his sonWullie, and employs a skilled teamof joiners and installers forprojects ranging from residentialwork to complete commercial fit-outs.

Back in 2005, Dust Control Sys-tems was commissioned to supplyand install a complete dust extrac-tion system at the workshop andthen later, in 2009, DCS engineersreturned to retro-fit energy-savingcontrol equipment to the system.Melvyn Bathgate, sales director atDust Control Systems, com-mented: “It is always a pleasure tobe invited to return to a customer’s premises to re-configure or update an existing dustextraction system; it’s generally a sign that our customer’s business is doing well, but it isalways an affirmation that we are doing our job right.”

To cope with increasing levels of production, David Urquhart commissioned DCS to install anew high-efficiency filter unit, along with a replacement for one of the three existing fan units. Thenew 37 kW direct drive fan replaces a 15 kW unit, is inverter controlled and provides an extractionvolume of 21,350 m3/hr — bringing the system’s total extraction capacity to almost 50,000 m3/hr.Additional auto-dampers have been fitted to machines in the factory and, as machines come onand off-line, sensors detect the changing extraction requirement and the main fan speed isregulated to match demand — optimising extraction and minimising energy consumption.

The new NFKZ3000 modular chain filter unit has reverse air regeneration for cleaning thepatented antistatic Superbag filter media, and pressure-free disposal of collected waste isachieved via a rotary valve. A waste transfer fan then delivers the waste material through aclosed-loop system into an adjacent storage silo and, in the colder months, warm air can bereturned from the filter unit to the factory. The return air system, controlled by a manually-operated summer/winter gate, also includes a fire damper with fusible link and micro-switch.

“Another safety feature that DCS incorporated into the extraction system at David Urquhart’sare the CARZexplosion isola-tion valveswhich, in linewith currentATEX recom-m e n d a t i o n s ,are installed in the ductwork between the fans’ outlets and the filter unit,”explained Melvyn Bathgate. If an explosion does occur, the isolation valvesare designed to prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames fromtravelling upstream in the ductwork, and back into the factory.

In conclusion, Mr Urquhart added: “Despite the relatively remotelocation of our factory, we are always impressed with the sales and serv-ice response, and the efficient project management provided by Melvynand the team at DCS — they dismantled the old filter unit on a Friday, installed the new filter in its place over the weekend, and commissionedthe system on the Monday.”Dust Control Systems Ltd l Tel 0800 040 [email protected] l www.DCSlimited.co.uk

THANKS to the ultra-efficient extraction systeminstalled by Dust Control Systems Ltd, employeesat Aquapac have an enviably-clean working envi-roment — even with high-speed woodworkingmachines in continual operation.

DCS has supplied and maintained dust extractionplant for Scottish furniture manufacturer, AquapacLtd, for over 15 years and, when the decision wasmade to relocate the business from Glasgow to Cum-bernauld, managing director Stephen Connachanhad no hesitation in asking DCS sales director MelvynBathgate to survey the new premises and put forwardproposals for design and installation of a new dustextraction system.

Established in 1995, Aquapac is geared to panelproduction, and manufactures ready-to-assemble,flat-pack furniture for a growing customer base thatextends throughout the UK and Europe, and as farafield as North America, Australia and New Zealand. In its early days, the company specialised in the man-ufacture of bespoke cabinetry for the pet industryand today, although Aquapac also produces woodenpanel furniture products for hotels, offices and stu-dent accommodation, a large part of the business inderived from the manufacture and export of bespokeaquarium and vivarium cabinets.

Investing in the Cumbernauld property has pro-vided Aquapac with a workspace of around 50,000 ft2

— ample space for its arsenal of high speed machinery; including a beamsaw, three edgebanders and three CNC machining centres. The facilityalso provides space for storage of raw materials and a packing line wheresets of panels and associated fittings are boxed and palletised ready fordispatch. And, with plans to build turnover through continued develop-ment of the niche pet furniture market, as well as gaining a growing shareof the domestic furniture market, the company also expects to increasestaffing levels appreciably over the next couple of years.

Although Aquapac operates a double-shift system, with panels in con-tinuous production, loading and off-loading panels, switching machiningprograms and other inevitable pauses in the manufacturing cycle, meansthat different machines are constantly coming on or off-line.

Traditionally, an extraction system will run at full power from the startto the end of the day; constantly extracting from machines whether theyare in use or not.

To optimise extraction efficiency, and maximise energy savings forAquapac, the DCS proposal included the installation of an Ecogate® ‘Ex-

traction-on-Demand’ system. With hundreds of installations in operationaround the world, the proven Ecogate® technology controls power out-put to the fan — automatically adjusting fan speed, in real time, to ex-actly match the factory’s changing extraction requirements throughoutthe working day and, when all machines are powered down at the end ofthe day, Ecogate® automatically shuts down the extraction system.

At Aquapac, the extraction fan is powered by a 75 kW direct drivemotor with a maximum speed of 1,500 rpm. Operating the fan at fullpower, for five days a week, would consume in excess of 300,000 kW ofelectricity in 12 months. “By installing Ecogate® technology, DCS has cal-culated that our energy usage will be less than half of that,” commentedStephen Connachan, “and the savings generated will be sufficient to re-coup our outlay on the system in less than two years — then those sav-ings just continue for the lifetime of the system.”

Filtering the dust-laden air is an externally sited NFKZ3000 chain filter, with patented antistatic Superbag filter media; integrated regenerationfans provide reverse air cleaning of the filter bags.

This compact, cost-efficient modular unit is manufactured from gal-vanised steel, is virtually maintenance-free, and has the capacity to filteran air volume of around 40,000 m3/hr. The unit comprises one inlet mod-ule and five filter modules, and filtered waste dropping to the base of thehopper section is continually directed by a chain and flight conveyor to-wards the rotary valve. From here it is discharged, pressure-free, into aclosed-loop transfer system, and a 15 kW waste transfer fan delivers thewaste to an adjacent sealed collection skip. The NFKZ3000 filter unit isATEX-approved and ideally-suited to handling the large volumes of wastedust material typically generated in panel manufacturing environments.

From each clean air outlet on the filter unit, the warm discharged aircan be re-directed into the factory during colder weather, or extractedto atmosphere when not required. Airflow direction is controlled by amanually-operated gate and the return air system is protected by a firedamper with fusible link and micro-switch. In addition, and as recom-mended by ATEX equipment regulations, a CARZ back pressure valve pro-tects the factory and its occupants from the effects of a pressure waveand flames travelling upstream in the ductwork, and back into the build-ing, in the event of an explosion occurring in the filter unit.

“At Dust Control Systems we will not compromise on safety,” saysMelvyn Bathgate, “and CARZ explosion isolation valves are alwaysincluded in our system designs.”Dust Control Systems Ltd l Tel 0800 040 [email protected] l www.DCSlimited.co.uk

“We design and build almostevery possible type of external, in-ternal and cabinet door, along withassociated cabinetry,” says OliverBryan, “and, with our team ofskilled craftsmen and the com-pany’s wider expertise in bespokejoinery manufacture, we are ableto offer our clients extended sup-port on new-build or renovationprojects.” The company currentlyemploys around 15 people and isundergoing a period of rapidgrowth — especially in the fittedkitchens and bedrooms market, where Foxstow Shaker Doors aremanufacturing bespoke doors anddrawer fronts to fit standard cabi-nets supplied by the likes of How-dens and IKEA, as well as designingand manufacturing additional

pieces of matching, custom-builtcabinetry when required.

Despite the obvioius capabili-ties of the workforce at Foxstow, itwas becoming an impossible taskto keep pace with the increasingdemand for bespoke doors usingexisting machinery and employ-ing traditional techniques. Fox-stow had previously invested inseveral classical SCM machines, such as the TEN220 Class Tenoner,a Superset XL Moulder and TF130PS Class spindle moulder so, whenthe need for a state-of-the-art CNCmachining centre became the ob-vious next step, the decision tocontact Jamie Walters, SCM’s areasales manager, was one of theeasier decisions Oliver Bryan has

had to make for the business.“Our existing classical ma-

chines, purchased through SCM’sdistributor Blyth Woodmachinery, have more than met our expecta-tions,” Oliver explains, “and I waskeen to maintain our affiliationwith SCM if the right machine forthe job was going to be a cost-effective option.”

Production space at FoxstowJoinery is very much at a premium,so providing a machine with afootprint to fit the restricted floorspace was the first challenge SCMneeded to overcome. Taking all ofFoxstow’s requirements into ac-count, Jamie’s proposal was for theinstallation of a Morbidelli AuthorM200F; one of SCM’s new ‘All-in-One’ range of CNC machining cen-tres. The Author M200F was in factso new that there were no otherinstallations in the UK to demon-strate the machine’s capabilities, and Oliver was invited to see asimilar machine put through itspaces at the workshop of an SCMcustomer in Essex. “The machinewe demonstrated for Fox-stow was an M400,” says JamieWalters. “The M400 has a larger ca-pacity than Foxstow required, andwas too big for the space available, but the demonstration proved toOliver that this was the right tech-nology to satisfy Foxstow’s pro-duction requirements.”

In common with many growingmanufacturing businesses, Fox-stow did not have an open-endedbudget and, although SCM had

been his first port of call, Oliveralso evaluated similar machineson offer from competing manu-facturers. However, with the SCMmachine ticking all the technicalboxes, Oliver committed to anorder just a few weeks later.

The compact footprint of theM200F, coupled with SCM’s “Pro-Space” solution, facilitates installa-tion in the tightest of spaces andis able to process a sheet width upto 1,900 mm, with a maximumworking width of 1,620 mm, 3,110mm lengthways, and verticalclearance height of 250 mm. Op-erator safety is assured by sensors, incorporated into the soft-cush-ioned bumpers on each side of themoving gantry, which react in-stantly on contact with any obsta-cle; immediately stopping allmachining operations. The com-plete absence of restrictive fencesaround the machine, togetherwith the fully integrated electricalcabinet and vacuum pump, allowsoperators total freedom and ac-cess to all sides of the work tableduring machining operations, andthe large viewing window, whichopens for cleaning and mainte-nance, provides an unrestrictedview of machining operations.

The Morbidelli M200F is loadedwith a range of unique technolo-gies: SCM’s Rotoaxial “RO.AX” spin-dle technology, for example, withunrivalled maintenance intervalsof 1,000 operating hours anddrilling speeds up to 8,000 rpm, guarantees stability and accuracy

Primary contorl and programming functions are carried out at the mobile console, with its 19” colourmonitor, but the hand-held “TECPAD” remote control unit allows ‘on the hoof’ monitoring and con-trol during machining.

With a 14-position tool changer sited adjacent to the 24,000 rpmrouting head, tool changeovers on the Author M200F are ac-complished in around 15 seconds.

during fast drilling operations; the‘JQX” five-axis unit allows tools tobe oriented in virtually any direc-tion, and allows machining up to10 deg below the horizontalplane; and the continuous alu-minium alloy table provides uni-form distribution of vacuum to theworkpiece, with vacuum outletsspaced 12 cm apart in both direc-tions, and foot-switch operationallowing the operator to managetwo-handed loading, positioningand unloading operations effi-ciently and safely.

Before the introduction of theMorbidelli CNC machine, Foxstowwas making all their shaker designdoors with traditional joints, usingthe classical machinery. Introduc-ing the CNC machining centre hasrevolutionised sheet productionand improved efficiency, qualityand safety. And, as well as the sig-nificant benefits of machiningsheet materials, the POD elementof the Morbidelli Author M200Fnow allows Foxstow to machineother bespoke pieces such as pel-mets, cornices and curved-headdoors and frames. The 130 mm x130 mm square vacuum pods areeasily and quickly positioned andfixed in any position across the en-tire worktable surface; allowingfast positioning and set-up ofworkpieces ready for machining.Foxstow has got off to a flyingstart with a comparatively minimalrange of Vivaldi tooling, suppliedby Viscount Tooling, but the ob-

jective is to build on this rangeover time, as and when new prod-uct designs demand a more com-plex collection of tools.

As with all SCM CNC machines, the Morbidelli M200F utilisesSCM’s proven Xilog Maestro 3DCAD/CAM software suite. The soft-ware is highly intuitive with simple‘drag-and-drop’ functionality tomany regular operations, in addi-tion to all the standard in-builtfunctions such as:- importing ofIGES files editing contours andcurves, etc. Preconfigured geo-metries and drilling/routing pat-terns available from the MaestroAPPS library, it enables the opera-tor to create bespoke macros andsub-programs. Machine opera-tions are programmed and man-aged from the mobile controlconsole, which incorporates a Win-dows-based PC and 19” colourmonitor and, with the consoleconnected to an internal network, design data can be transferredfrom networked PCs; optional in-ternet connection provides accessto SCM’s service and diagnosticsnetwork. In addition, the specifi-cation for Foxstow included a“TECPAD” remote control, with 7”touch-screen colour display, al-lowing control over a multitude ofprogram and machining opera-tions, including manual speedoverride, error management andgraphic positioning of rails andpods.

Foxstow finally settled on the

Morbidelli Author M200F becauseof the new technology it offeredand because of the overall valuefor money the purchase repre-sented, but Oliver was also im-pressed with the technical salessupport that Jamie Walters andSCM provided along the way: “Thepurchasing process met all my ex-pectations,” says Oliver Bryan, “ashas the invaluable support we’vereceived from knowledgeableSCM engineers.” SCM delivered, in-stalled and commissioned thenew machine in the time frame

agreed with Foxstow and, in con-clusion, Mr Bryan commented:“This investment gives us a clearadvantage over many of our com-petitors and we are able to pro-vide our customers with a viablealternative to ‘off-the-shelf’ stan-dard-sized doors. Our capacity formanufacturing Shaker Doors hasdoubled and, as a result, we aretakeing orders for bespoke doorsfrom all over the UK and Europe.”SCM Group UK LtdTel 0115 977 0044www.scmgroup.me.uk

The Author M200F fits into a confined space at Foxstow, butSCM’s ‘ProSpace’ solution allows 360-degree access, and the widewindow panel provides an excellent view of machining operations.

Norbert Soos (left), whose previous experience with SCM equip-ment helped to reduce the learning curve for Foxstow, attendedin-house training at SCM’s UK base in Nottingham along with col-league Mark Stewart, who was new to CNC technology. Addi-tional on-site training provided by SCM was also embraced byowner Oliver Bryan (right).

Cabinet Vision — from start to finish for DraksUSING Cabinet Vision as its soleCAD/CAM solution, home inte-rior manufacturer Draks InteriorDoor Systems Ltd has been ableto take jobs from design to fin-ish in one single system, allow-ing a quick and smooth internalprocess.

Draks Technical Director ChrisAyres says: “Being able to doeverything with just one softwarepackage, means that everything, including the transition from CADto CAM is done seamlessly, whichis extremely useful.”

Currently operating with 29 em-ployees, Draks Interior Door Sys-tems Ltd produces customisedhome solutions, mainly focusingon design-led hinged and slidingwardrobe doors, wardrobe interi-ors, room dividers, walk-inwardrobes and bathroom cabinetsto the new build sector.

Working in the industry for over20 years, the company has built upa reputation for quality through itscustomer-focused approach, com-bined with technical and designexpertise. Sited on a former Amer-ican Air Force base at Upper Hey-ford in Oxfordshire, the premisescomprise a 15,0å00 ft2 manufactur-ing facility, and an additional stor-age unit. Chris Ayres says: “We workwith a number of large propertydevelopers, including the BerkleyGroup, Taylor Wimpey and SpitfireBespoke Homes. We also work for anumber of smaller companiesbuilding between 20 and 100homes a year. This huge range of

customer profiles requires us to bevery responsive to changing designrequirements whether it be onebedroom with an out of verticalwall or an entire site with 20 differ-ent designs and multiple options.”

Draks originally focused onmanufacturing plantation shut-ters, however as the market sizegrew, they found the product vul-nerable to competition fromcheap imports. As a result, theybegan to specialise in bespoke

wardrobe products involving arange of materials — glass, mirror, wood and metal. Combined witha fast turnaround time, in housemanufacturing and the element ofproduct fragility, he says this hasbeen a winning formula againstoverseas competition.

Once they began to offer amore complex product range theyknew they would require a CADsoftware package. “We beganusing Cabinet Vision when we pur-

chased our first CNC router. Wewere aware that we could not dothis without some kind of CADpackage, and Cabinet Vision of-fered an ideal one-stop systemthat we could use for every step ofthe process. This starts with thesales drawing and carries on rightthrough to the finished productcoming off the production line.”

The ability to do everything inone software package has beenbenefiting the business ever since.“That’s extremely useful to us andmeans that with better job controlwe can better manage our stocklevels, reducing high-value stockbeing stored here instead of itbeing installed and invoiced. Thefast turnaround that Cabinet Vi-sion gives us is extremely impor-tant. It’s absolutely critical for thiskind of low batch production thatwe do.” All components that re-quire precision installation are cuton an Andi CNC Router, from theAnderson Group, and pro-grammed by Cabinet Vision’sScreen-To-Machine module.

The key users of Cabinet Visionat Draks are the design team, which has recently expanded dueto a growth in business. Sarah Nor-man, CAD team lead, says “CabinetVision is a vital and integral part ofour design and manufacturing. Infact, it’s our sole system. It’s Cabi-net Vision, from the point where

Page 16 Panel, Wood & Solid Surface April/May 2018

we get the first task from the salesteam, all the way through to thefinished manufacturing, and outinto the field with the fitter.”

Using Cabinet Vision to draw upand render designs allows thesales team to present an accurateillustration of the final product tothe customer, which is importantfor managing customer expecta-tions. Sarah Norman says: “Thesales team uses the photo rendersnow in the version we are cur-rently using, and with that func-tionality being considerablyenhanced in Version 11, it is goingto be fantastic for us as a sales tool.It means the customer can see ex-actly what the installation will looklike in their room.”

Cabinet Vision’s functionalitygives synergy between the sales, design, manufacturing and installa-tion process, resulting in a high levelof end product accuracy with aquick turnaround time. This is par-ticularly important for large projectswhere more than 50 design optionsmay be required. Manipulating thedesign accurately is made easierwith the Editing Shapes function, which allows the user to representrooms that have inconsistenciessuch as sloped ceilings.

“In quite a few cases we have

had a sales drawing taken fromthe original floor plan and we havehad to change it due to the siteconditions, so Cabinet Vision’sadaptability means that we cansimply change the original shapeextremely quickly. I find EditingShapes to be one of Cabinet Vi-sion’s most useful functions, be-cause where we do have slantedceilings we can’t simply have a rec-tangular box. It gives us the abilityto make things fit an exact spaceabsolutely perfectly.”

Draks has four original productranges that can be readily cus-tomised, from simple shelf and raildesigns, through to the Skylinerange which features a can-tilevered system of ‘floating’shelves. When a new project be-gins, the general parameters suchas colour of the board and heightof the ceiling are set, and the itemsneeded are simply selected fromthe catalogue. The flexibility tosimply alter the design saves timewhen starting new projects.

“Once we got the foundations ofall our different styles of the differ-ent ranges set up in Cabinet Vision, they became so easy to changewhen we are working on a newproject. So it definitely makes lifeeasier.”

Once the design stage is com-plete, the CAD drawing is convertedinto CAM. “With just a couple ofclicks we can check the list to makeany amendments to the drawing, then if I’m happy with it, I send itthrough, get the NC code enabledand send it out to machine. It reallyisn’t difficult at all.”

When the product is ready forinstallation, the accuracy of themanufactured product is of hugebenefit as this reduces fitting timeon site, which means more isachieved in a shorter time, and

builds are completed quicker.Sarah summarised, “Cabinet Vi-

sion adapts to produce all of ourdesigns. We have created somevery beautiful rooms with our fur-niture because of Cabinet Vision. Itis a very powerful tool, and oncewe understood how to talk to it, itwas surprising how much it canactually do.”Draks Industrieswww.draks.co.uk

GOOD quality routing and cutting toolsare essential in order to get the best outof any CNC router. Purchasing inferiorquality alternatives often proves a falseeconomy, leading to a sub-standard fin-ish, a significant decrease in tool life anda corresponding increase in materialwastage. The most common reasons fortool failure include selecting the wrongtool for the material to be processed, using a tool well past its predicted life-span, failure to use an appropriatecoolant or lubricant and not changingtool-holding devices such as colletswithin the recommended time scale.

Tooling is a continually developing areaof routing/cutting technology, fuelled bythe availability of new and frequently morecomplex materials, coatings and geometriesand the need to process widely differing ma-terials to accommodate multiple applications. As a leading supplier ofhigh-performance routing and cutting systems, AXYZ Internationalclaims to have comprehensively addressed these requirements via its24/7 online CNCRoutershop division. This regularly updated facility pro-vides both general-purpose and specialist tools that support not onlymachines in the extensive AXYZ International portfolio but also thosefrom virtually any other supplier regardless of make or country of origin.

The choice of tools and accessories available includes not only rout-ing/cutting devices but also blades for oscillating, tangential and drag-knife cutters, collets and cones, accessories such as cutting fluids and a

wide range of spare parts. These are con-stantly supplemented with new devices tofurther extend the performance capabilitiesof CNC routers. New devices currently beingtested include a high-power routing spindlethat is said to represent a major advance-ment in high-speed routing/cutting tech-nology by providing twice the power andspeed of a standard spindle and a kiss-cutknife-cutting tool that will further extendthe capabilities of CNC routers by enabling amuch wider range of materials to beprocessed. Subject to the success of theseproduct tests, both of these devices will beavailable in the near future.

A typical example of the specialist toolssupplied by AXYZ International is theMarathon Compression Tool. Designed foruse on solid and particle woods and lami-nates, it features an advanced cutting geo-

metry and a special coating to protect the cut edge of the materials beingprocessed from the high temperatures generated during the routing/cutting cycle. The combined upwards and downwards spiral geometryof the Marathon Compression Tool ensures a clean and perfect finish tothe top and bottom surfaces of the materials being processed, a functionthat is of special significance if chipping of double-sided laminates is tobe avoided or when using natural woods where edge-finishing mightprove problematic if alternative spiral tools are used.AXYZ International l Tel 01952 291600www.axyz.co.uk l www.cncroutershop.com

“QUALITY is everything,” GaryTuddenham, managing directorof Parabola Workshops Ltd, toldPanel, Wood & Solid Surface. Hiscompany, founded in 2013, is aspecialist furniture manufac-turer, working predominantlywith the superyacht industryand residential homes.

Based just outside Carlisle andworking with designers in London, work comes in through recom-mendation. “Our work is bespoke, one offs: we very rarely do any-thing twice,” Gary said. “We can beworking on a project for up tothree to four months on a singleitem.”

To maintain the high standardsof quality, Gary recently investedin a ‘made to measure’ KündigUniq-S edge sander.

Gary first saw the Kündig rangeof sanders at a W exhibition, atBirmingham’s NEC. The team fromParabola took full advantage ofthe opportunities at the show toview a wide range of woodwork-ing machinery in action, includingKündig sanders demonstrated byCarl O’Meara of Kündig UK Ltd. Re-garding the edge sander, Garysaid, “We ummed and ahhedabout it: then, after a visit to Carlat his showroom in Burscough, near Preston, we felt that weshould definitely get the sander: itmade sense.”

The edge sander provides sig-nificant production advantages.“We have machines that sand thefaces of panels, but always spend alot of time by hand sanding theedges. It just does not make sensewhen there are a lot of drawer-boxes and carcasses. The Uniq-Stakes the donkey work out ofeverything: it is efficient.”

Gary chose Kündig “because of

the build quality and the reputa-tion. There are a couple of othermanufacturers that do a similarmachine but it wasn’t quite thesame. For the accuracy we werelooking at the sander had to bebuilt correctly, with tiny tolerances. It had to be a rigid quality machine.

“It is very convenient. We havethe edge sander in the hand work-shop rather than the machineworkshop. It is there when youneed it, right next to the workbenches.” While space was not anissue, Gary added, “It is a nice com-pact machine.”

Gary selected various options, including a grooved infeed platento allow the sanding off of veneersthat have been over laid after edg- ing; a second transport belt to

allow sanding of the ends of nar-row panels; a two speed motor toallow finer grade abrasives to beused; a bobbin attachment allow-ing internal and external curves tobe sanded; and a semi round tableallowing the sanding of shapesusing the rubber coated driveroller on the machine.

The Kündig Uniq-S handlesthroughfeed sanding of small orlarge workpieces thanks to the in-tegrated feed system, and can op-erate manually or with automaticfeeding. With a table size of 1,180mm x 325 mm, the sander comeswith two guide-pulleys for longworkpieces. Pressure rollers holdthe workpieces against the feed

belt. The solid frame constructionfeatures heavy cast iron tables. Thebelt width is 150-200 mm, and thebelt length is 2,000 mm. The work-ing level is approximately 830 mmon the sanding side and 900 mm onthe side for veneer sanding. The netweight is 490 kg and the floor spacerequired is 1,150 mm x 800 mm.

Asked if he would recommendthe Uniq-S sander, Gary replied,“Yes, definitely. It does everythingwe expected it to do.” He added:“Carl is perfect: you can talk tohim, no problem, and he will giveyou good advice.”Kündig LtdTel 0845 833 0565Email [email protected]

ABET Laminati’s continuing par-tnership with Print Acoustics®, adivision of Belgian companyTriplaco (family group foundedin 1890), has proven popular inhelping combat the ongoingproblems of sound reverbera-tion in commercial, public sec-tor, school, restaurant, retailand residential environments.

Modern design trends for mini-malist interiors coupled with hardsurfaces creates issues with soundpollution bouncing around inte-rior spaces affecting ambientnoise levels and the associateddiscomfort for users.

Noise can also impact on thesuccess of a space. In education, for example, many studies haveshown that noise impacts learn-ing. A Bronzaft and McCarthystudy showed that New York Citystudents were hampered in theirreading skills by elevated noiselevels. Students 70 m from an ele-vated subway track lagged behindtheir peers on the quieter side ofthe building, between threemonths and as much as one year.Another example is open offices inthe work environment. In originthis is a cost driven trend but lossof efficiency of up to 25% of theoccupants has been proven in dif-ferent studies.

There are over 500 Abet colours

and woodgrain finishes availablefor use as wall cladding, for cabi-net doors or freestanding units. They are specially designed to em-brace the hospitality, retail, com-mercial, education and residentialsectors where noise pollution canbe a problem, particularly in meet-ing rooms, music rooms, restau-rants, school halls, sports halls andshops.

Various micro-perforations orgroove patterns present a deeplyembossed surface giving a sculp-tured and tactile feel coupled withan aesthetically appealing look, whether used as individual mod-ules for localised sound dampen-ing or installed across a whole wallto create an attractive and sound-absorbing feature with a Noise Re-duction Coefficient up to 0.85.

As wtih all the finishes fromAbet Laminati, the range meets orexceeds all European and Britishperformance standards for resist-ance to wear, heat, moisture, im-pact and scratching, ensuring longlife-cycle, minimum maintenanceand enduring visual appeal
