by Kendall Workman

Presidents Trumpet May 2020May of 2020 is more of a progress report than a “Trumpet”. The slow and careful return to what some folks are calling “the new normal” has begun. In some communi-ties, limited restaurant in-house dining has resumed, hair care salon businesses have re-opened and other social activities have begun their resumption as well. Our May and June 2020 meetings have been cancelled and until such time as we can safely and confidently convene club meetings in a public space that will accommodate >35 members, and while following various local, state and federal requirements for same, the scheduling and hosting of our monthly club meeting will remain on-hold. Please continue to check the status of our monthly club meeting and location here in The Rocket, as well as our website.

We also received word from the OCA of their decision to postpone the July 2020 National Meeting to 2021. Additional details regarding same have been distributed to OCA members and registered event participants and is also available on the OCA website: https://www.oldsmobileclub.org/

In response to my April 2020 request for ideas about how we might continue to sup-port our good work, I have received two excellent recommendations:

1. Establish a Go-Fund-Me web page in support of the NTOC Helping Hands dona-tions. The NTOC officer will review this recommendation and report back on same in the June 2020 issue of The Rocket.

2. Leverage Amazon for direct donations of assistance packages to the residents of the Fisher House. (Note: Helena and Leon Isbell reports the Fisher House has been closed to veteran family use at this time; however, COVID-19 front-line health-care workers are using the facility as a respite from their responsibilities and are also in need of personal hygiene, snack items and laundry supplies, etc.)

“Thank you for reaching out to us during this trying time. Currently we are not lodg-ing families, our mission has changed we are now lodging Nurses and Doctors who are in contact with COVID-19 patients and cannot go home to their families. We are asking for healthy snacks for our lodgers along with small bottles of water, Tide Pods, mints, chewing gum. You are welcome to come up with your own ideals. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.”

May/June 2020May and June 2020 Meeting Cancellation Notice

Everyone: Being as many local and state government agencies have communicated COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place orders to continue I recommend we cancel the May and June 2020 NTOC Meeting. I hope each of you and your families are doing well at this time. Please let me know how I may be of any assistance with a grocery run, etc.

3. Room for more. Please keep your ideas and recommendations coming!

Oldsmobile’s are on the highway! On Saturday, April 25, 2020, and while driving north on SR 289, in the town of Prosper, TX, I spied a beautiful 1971 Delta 88 Royale Con-vertible in the rear-view mirror of my 1988 Cutlass Supreme Classic. I quickly intro-duced myself to the driver (at a stop light nonetheless) and learned later he was a member of NTOC! Thank you Tim Sicula very much for your kind email note and I look forward to seeing you, your 71’ Delta 88 Royale as well as your newly acquired 1966 Toronado at a future NTOC event! Then on Saturday afternoon, May 2nd, and while kneeling down pulling weeds and doing other snipping and clipping yard work at my house in Frisco, TX, a green-colored 1972 Cutlass Supreme Convertible turned the corner onto my street and cruised away before I could scramble to my feet and flag down the driver and say hello. Go figure. These sunny, warm Saturday’s seem to coaxing the Convertible Oldsmobile’s into the fresh air and blue skies of North Texas.

Thank you everyone for your membership in the NTOC. Please stay safe and healthy and remember to “Escape from the Ordinary” even if it’s a quick drive in your Oldsmo-bile to your favorite local restaurant to pick up take-out food.

P.S. Did you know you can purchase Oldsmobile (and other GM Marks) branded face masks on the GM Club Apparel website? How cool is that! https://gmclubapparel.com/products/oldsmobile-club-of-america-oca-face-mask-made-in-usa?_pos=6&_sid=3e3baa23f&_ss=r&variant=31685551784038

April 2020 Monthly Meeting Minutes

As we are all painfully aware the April 2020 NTOC meeting was cancelled as were almost everything associated with group meetings. President Kendall Workman is-sued a notice that the meetings will be resumed when it is considered safe for NTOC members to gather together in group again.

Treasurer’s Report Glenn Hargrove has reported NTOC remains solvent with sufficient balances to con-tinue operations.

Club Spirit Items

Caps and VisorsThe new NTOC Club caps and NTOC visors are still available. Cap price is $15.00 and visors are $12.00. Caps are available in a variety of colors, red, white, and charcoal. Harat reported that all but one (1) of the Royal Blue caps have been sold. Visors are available in red, royal blue and white. The caps have the NTOC logo, but the artwork was too large for the visors so they were embroidered with an Oldsmobile logo, a Texas flag, and the letters NTOC

Club Logo Decals Lois ordered the two types of NTOC Club Logo decals and they have been received. Both decals are now available from Harat. The two types are: 1) die cut, back adhe-sive stickers and front adhesive decals. The decals are available to be purchased for $1.00 each. New members will receive a club logo decal as part of the welcome letter.

Denim Shirts with Club Logo This has been put on hold until the club starts to meet again.

We have located the company that previously made our denim shirts. He still has the artwork/program for the NTOC logo and will provide pricing when we put together an order with sizes and quantities.

Lois has the contact information for the company that we purchased denim shirts from in the past. She will check to see if they are still available and get a quote. The previous vendor should still have the program for the club logo.

Annual Membership Renewal Campaign Renewal Notices have been sentIt is time to begin our annual membership renewal campaign. NTOC memberships run from April 1 through March 31 on an annual or bi-annual basis. Annual member-ship dues are $24.00 and bi-annual membership is $40.00. Gene Crowdis sent out

We will not delete the names of the members who did not renew, but they will be listed in a separate group.

The membership renewal period has ended. I will be having the rosters printed and sent out. (With new membership cards if you have renewed.)

March NTOC Officer Elections

January Meeting Parts Auction Moved to August 2020 MeetingAttention: There will be a “member-parts-donation” auction during the August meeting. We will have an auction for members to bid on each item. Just maybe you will be able to pick up a “treasure” for your car or display. Oh, I almost neglected to add – BRING MONEY. It is for a good cause!!

AutoRama NTOC DisplayTom Bilse has volunteered to coordinate all of the Autorama activities for next year. Thanks Tom. We will support you!

During the Autorama discussion Gene Crowdis made a motion that beginning with 2021 the NTOC club display entry fee for the cars representing NTOC be paid by the club. Stewart Stephenson seconded the motion. After discussion a vote was held and the motion passed.

Car Shows and EventsAll car shows have been cancelled until the serious issues of the coronavirus CO-VID-19 have been brought under control

2020 NTOC Annual Zone Show – Postponed/CancelledAfter all of the preparations were completed the NTOC officers met by email to dis-cuss the impact of the coronavirus COVID-19 and agreed that the 2020 NTOC Zone Show would be postponed. There were no financial obligations involved in the post-ponement. We want to thank everyone who participated in the planning effort for the Zone Show, but as everyone now knows the event would have been cancelled by the restrictions implemented by local, state, and national governments.

Annual NTOC Mustang Club Participation Status of this show is pendingThe Mustang Club has moved their 2nd. Saturday Show to Flower Mound Square. They have invited NTOC to pick a month to participate in the event. The members

NTOCP.O. Box 856

Rowlett, TX 75030-856Dues are $24.00 for one (1) year and $40.00 for two (2) years.

New member dues are pro-rated at the rate of $2.00 per month to ensure that all memberships renew on April 1 of the year.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY – MayAnn Lowery Pat Yancey Brad Bishop Kayla NossamanIf your birthday month does not have you listed it is because I don’t have

you on the Birthday List.

When you renew your membership please let us know your birthday and we will in-clude you in our Birthday Wishes section.

Ken’s CornerAs a side note Chris Dreiling, Gene Crowdis, and Brad Bishop met at Brad’s house and replaced the rear brakes on Brad’s ’77 442. All parts were available except for the self-adjusting bar, coil spring and plungers for the brake cylinder. Brad said that he thought the rear brakes were original to his car. From the looks of the parts we had to clean up and reuse he may be right. Anyway he now has brakes and no excuse for not being more active.

On a personal note

Bill Weissman passed away on March 27, 2020 after suffering from Parkinson’s Disease for several years..

Bill Weissman was a founding member of NTOC back in 1986 – 1987 time-frame and participated regularly at club activities and swap meets until his health prevented him from his normal level of activities. Many of us were able to complete our Oldsmobile restoration because of the parts Bill sold us.

Betty and I first got to know Bill and Cynthia on a trip to Waco, TX to the Mini-Nats in 1989. They welcomed us into the club and made us feel like fam-ily right from the start. Over the years Bill has owned many Oldsmobiles and has done some very nice restoration work on them. Many Olds are still on the road because of Bill and his passion.

Thank you Bill that is your NTOC legacy. RIP

Gene Crowdis
