Year 6 had the pleasure of meeting the Minister for Dobell – Karen McNamara and Senator Deborah O’Neill. We also had a fabulous time at very, very cold Thredbo, where we went on a chairlift ride and the stu-dents got to be creative building snow people and making snow angels.

Berkeley Vale Campus GATS Test Year 6 students had the opportunity to sit the GATS test yesterday at TLSC - Berkeley Vale Campus. We wish them all the best. SRC Discos The K-2 and 3-6 discos were held last night and the students seemed to have a wonderful time, dressed in the ‘fluoro’ theme. All money raised goes to our Student Representative Council. Thank you to all students and staff who supported this event. Design and Technology Day - 6/7 Transition 15 students were given the opportunity to attend TLSC – Berkeley Vale Campus for a Design and Technology Day today, this involves being a part of workshops in woodwork, design and cooking. These days are a part of our Year 6/7 transition and give students the opportunity to expe-rience high school life. Koori Choir Workshop The TLLC Koori Choir will be having their Term 2 workshop and perfor-mance on Tuesday 23 June at Chittaway PS. Notes will be sent home shortly. Mufti Day On Tuesday 23rAugust students will be allowed to wear Mufti to school for a gold coin donation, this is to help raise money for our PBL rewards. The theme is ONESIES/PJs. Centenary Challenge: Photo Project Many thanks to former students who have been scrutinising 1993 photos so class members are identified in readiness for the Centenary celebra-tions. The latest group of super sleuths included Alicia McAuley, Courtney Jackson, Brooke Walpole, Simon Pettinger, Erin Buxton, Jayde Morley, Tim Richardson, Mitch and Nick Pont. In addition to former students studying printed copies of school photos, some old classmates have banded together identifying young faces post-ed on our Facebook Group: “Berkeley Vale Public School Centenary Cele-brations 2015.” Special mention goes to Jason Wynne for his wonderful contribution to the project. Thanks, Jason.

Interrelate Family Evenings Every alternate year we organise a family evening with Inter-relate School Services where families can attend one or both sessions. These two sessions are: 6:00 – 7:00 pm “Where did I come from?” (Reproduction & Childbirth) 7:15 – 8:15 pm “Preparing for Puberty” (Puberty) The date we have scheduled is Monday 3 August (Week 4 Term 3) The cost will be $25 per family per session or $30 if attending both sessions.

Student Led Conferences Once again this year, on the last Wednesday of the term (24/6) from 3 – 6 pm, we will be conducting student led con-ferences in place of parent/teacher interviews for most clas-ses. Teachers will schedule a brief time for each family to talk about details but the 20-minute time slot is aimed at your child showing what they are doing in class, how they can improve, and setting some goals for the rest of the year in consultation with their parents.

Class 4CH Department of Education contractors came to the school this week to assess works to make the 4CH demountable class-room habitable after our bad storms earlier this term. Unfortu-nately, due to the high demand for building maintenance, it will be 1 to 2 more weeks before work can begin. The contrac-tors have assured us that if the work can be brought forward to accommodate a speedier solution they will let us know.

Darrell Keirnan Deputy Principal

Student Absences The Education Act (1990) requires parents to ensure that their children of compulsory school age attend school on each day that the school is open for instruction unless there is a good reason for them not attending. When students are absent, parents are required by law to provide the school with an acceptable explanation within 7 days of the absence. We are currently feeling the effects of the changing seasons with a number of illnesses going around and more absences occurring. Please contact the school if your child is absent for more than 2 days or send in a note explaining reason for the absence when your child returns to school. You are also able to report absences on the Skoolbag App.

Kindergarten Enrolments & KNX 2016 We are now accepting Kindergarten enrolments for 2016. If you have a child turning 5 by 31 July 2016 please come to the office to collect all the relevant enrolment forms.. The school will be running the KNX Transition Program which is a 10 week program. This prepares your child for the rou-tines and procedures of Berkeley Vale Public School. The pro-gram will begin Monday 7 September (other days of the week available) . Registration forms are available at the office. For further information please contact the office staff on 4388 1796.

Year 4 Myuna Bay Camp Last week students in Year 4 travelled to Myuna Bay Sport and Rec-reation Camp for a fun-filled three day camp. The students experi-enced a range of fantastic activities including canoeing, rock climb-ing, a giant swing, bike riding and archery. These activities required the students to team build, communicate with peers and instructors, test their confidence and conquer fears. Thank you to the students who attended, you were AMAZING and it was great getting to know you all! Thank you to the teachers who went above and beyond to make this camp a wonderful experience for all. Finally, thank you to the parents and families of BVPS for always supporting the fabulous experiences we aspire to provide your children. Here are some recounts of the trip:

“OMG, we’re finally going to Myuna Bay camp,” I excitedly said to my friends as the bus pulled up. Everyone was so eager to get on and leave school. The bus ride was a bit boring but everyone got excited all over again when we arrived. At first I thought camp was going be boring, as we had to carry our heavy bags all the way to the cabins. But, after seeing the awesome cabins everything turned around. Our first activity was bike riding and it was a lot of fun….well, until people fell over on the gravel. We pulled up at the bay and got to see turtles and lots of fish jumping out of the water. Unfortunately, no sharks were spotted that day. After that we went to archery and Mrs Trasler got two bull’s-eyes! Later that night, we went to the recreation hall to play games. The next day we went rock climbing and canoeing. Five people from 3/4T made it to top! They were lucky enough to abseil down the 5m wall. We also got to investigate marine animals while we were ca-noeing. On the final day we went on the giant swing. I went all the way to the top! My heart dropped when I pulled the rope, but it was so much fun. Finally, it was time to go and everyone was sad.

Last week, Year 4 went to Myuna Bay camp. I had the best three days of my life. There were so many great activities, but canoeing had to be my favourite and least favourite activity. After canoeing for quite a while and getting stuck many times, we stopped at a sandy beach. Bonnie and I went diving for turtles. Just when we thought we found one we realised it was just a stick. On the way back we got stuck in a bush and capsized the boat. Bonnie and I went tumbling out. When we finally got back in the canoe, we could see blue-ringed octopus below us. It was the best and worst five minutes of my life. My least favourite activity was the giant swing and rock climbing because I am afraid of heights. But I did both activities and was so proud that I pushed myself. Our grade did a great job on all of the activities and everyone did their best. Myuna Bay had ‘ok’ food, great activities and awesome cabins. I hope we get to go again.

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young

Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their

Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the

cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing

funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Educa-

tion Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid direct-

ly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Sydney North Hockey I went to Murwillumbah on 26 May to represent the school in my favourite sport, Hockey. Our Sydney North team won 1 game, lost 1 and drew 4 matches. Overall we came 4th in our Pool and equal 7th in both pools. Before making this team, I had to try out and be accepted, go to training sessions and train and play hard! Our team had the time of their lives, so if there is a sport you love competing in, GO FOR IT, keep trying and never look back! You never know how good you are at some things until you try. You could become a world champion someday…..Just Believe!!
