WARNERS BAY HIGH SCHOOL P & C ASSOCIATIONThe next mee ng of the Warners Bay High School P&C Associa on will be held in room H1 on Tuesday 22 July at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. We would like to thank Ms Marisa Dal Zo o for the informa on she provided at our May mee ng on “Suppor ng Students Through the HSC” and Ms Trudy Farmer for her informa ve talk at our June mee ng on the CAPA Faculty and the great work they are doing.

The P&C Federa on is currently undergoing structural reform. The NSW Parliament has introduced legisla on to reform the NSW Federa on of Parent and Ci zens Associa ons, which has suspended opera ons pending Supreme Court ac on. While these reforms will not aff ect the day-to-day opera on of individual school P&Cs, they will introduce a new execu ve structure which will ensure the Federa on operates as a modern and representa ve body on behalf of school P&C Associa ons.

Each school’s P&C Associa on will be asked to vote for councillors and delegates who will represent their electorate at the Federa on’s Annual General Mee ng, and councillors who will serve on the Federa on’s Board of Management. More informa on is available on the Department’s website at -

Staff professional learning is an important component of quality learning outcomes for students. On Friday 11 July, we are holding a School Development Day (SDD) as an alterna ve to the one scheduled for last day of Term 4. For teaching staff unable to a end this day Ms Dal Zo o and I will deliver a similar Professional Learning (PL) Day minus the keynote speaker, James No ngham. The focus of each day will be strategies to improve student learning by making them more responsible, self-directed learners. We look forward to this exci ng professional learning opportunity.

In summary, thank you for your ongoing support. I look forward to another highly successful term when we return for Term 3. Please remember that Monday, 14 July is a pupil free School Development Day. The focus of that day will be for staff to learn more about the Na onally Consistent Collec on of Data (NCCD) for students with a disability which will be mandatory for Australian schools in 2015.

Dr Sharon ParkesJune, 2014

Parent support makes it easier for the P&C to achieve its objec ve of suppor ng the Principal and Staff in the delivery of a high quality educa on for all those a ending the school thus enabling each student to achieve his/her best possible educa onal outcome. Fund raising through the opera on of the school canteen enables us to provide addi onal teaching aids, facili es and equipment for the benefi t of all students.

The school canteen is opera ng smoothly again this year. The dona ons from the canteen have enabled the P&C to fulfi ll its fi rst, second and third term commitments plus we have been able to provide a bonus dona on to the school. This brings our total school dona ons so far this year to $36,000. I would like to thank Wendy, Marj and the dedicated volunteers for their eff orts.

We would like to extend an invita on to all to a end our next mee ng. Ms Marisa Dal Zo o will be giving a presenta on on “Visible Learning”. Come and use this opportunity to get to know the Principal, some of the school execu ve and other parents in the relaxed atmosphere of a P&C mee ng. Your support will help to ensure the success of Warners Bay High School

We look forward to your con nued support and hope to see you at our next mee ng.

CAPA NEWS

STARSTRUCK 2014 recently closed its curtains on the last performance and by all accounts it has been a spectacular event. Warners Bay High School, as always, was well represented in both the soloists and in dancing sec ons.

We had numerous talented Year 12 students involved this year, including Elise Jensen, Siobhan Hull, India Monaghan, Lachlan Fisher, Lachlan Baita and David Slater. This was a wonderful opportunity for these students to perform in front of a very large audience and their talent and enthusiasm for the performing arts are a credit to their families and the school.

Our ‘dance troupe’ was again successfully involved and spent hours of me in rehearsal to perform at this event. I would like to congratulate these students on their success and in par cular thank Mrs Rhonda Grant for the me and eff ort that she has put in over this semester. I would also like to extend a big thank you to the students’ parents who have been suppor ng both their children and the school through the making of costumes, ferrying students to rehearsals and performances, and generally making the whole event a pleasant one for both staff and students.

Students involved in STARSTRUCK dancing were: Brooke Akre, Grace Bates, Annaliese Bevan, Shenae Bingham, Emily Campbell, Ameila Coleman, Amy Cur s, Nicola Kilpatrick, Emma Lane, Sarah McDonnell, Adriana Romani, Emma Shepherd, Mikayla Smith, Elise Spradley, Taylah Starre and Shannon Yates.

We also had a featured Tap Dance in this year’s produc on. The following students tapped to “These Boots Were Made For Walking”: Taylah Starre , Emma Lane, Nicola Kilpatrick and

Adriana Romani.

Mr English (CAPA) and Mrs Kell (LOTE) have recently started a Ukestra (ukulele ensemble) that is rehearsing weekly on Tuesday lunch mes in A12. Interested Music students are encouraged to speak to either staff member about the ensemble as we are looking for more members! We look forward to their wonderful talent being a part of our next performance event. Perhaps our Talent Quest?

The Year 11 Drama class have recently been involved in the Hunter New England Health MindPlay compe on . This is a wonderful achievement and a credit to both their clever

We consistently reach the fi nals in this compe on which says a great deal about both the drama c ability of our staff and students and the empathy and emo onal intelligence of our students. The students were given the topic of Wellbeing and chose to focus on how the pressure of going from Year 10 into Year 11 can have a nega ve impact due to the increase in expecta ons. Daniel Bos plays the central character and the play revolves around the pressure he faces and the op ons he has to consider in this situa on. For some of the students it was the fi rst me performing and an opportunity to overcome their anxiety in a suppor ve environment. The rest of the performers were Hayley Campbell, Chelsea Donahoo, Raelene Cherry, Lance Crane, Hanna Ewans, Rhys Harrison, Jasmine Jennings, Morgan Lewis, Pei Lin, Roger Ly, Roger Lin, Georgia Masters, Reid McManus, Kate Morris, Tabitha Mulhall, Alex Murray, Isobelle Russell, Tas Sagers, Daniel Taylor and Cur s Yates. Also, a big thank you to parents who have helped with transpor ng and suppor ng students.

The students audi oned on 30 May at the Hunter Theatre and successfully made it through to the Grand Final on Thursday 19 June where they came third. Well done Year 11 and Mrs Monk!

Our ar st of the month for June is Shannon Simm of Year 10. Shannon is a very clever student whose pain ng and drawing skills are excep onal. Well done Shannon.

Thank you to all who came to our fi rst MAD Night in 2014. It was an excellent event and the art works and performances were, as usual, fantas c. I would like to personally thank the CAPA staff , in par cular Mrs Donna Pfi ster and Ms Lesley Armstrong, who supervised the event in my absence.

Our next event is the HSC MAD Night where parents and friends will have an opportunity to see what all the fuss has been about with regard to HSC performances and Bodies of Work. It will be in late August and is always a wonderful evening. At the moment the CAPA HSC Students and staff are very busy with deadlines looming. I wish them luck and am very confi dent they will achieve excellent results.

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP CONVENTION

C H NC H N

On 1 June, 2014, four Year 10 Student Representa ve Council students and Mrs Hart travelled to Newcastle to be part of the Global Leadership Conven on. The students had to volunteer for the four posi ons which were voted on by Senior SRC students. Decisions were based on previous involvement in SRC ac vi es and enthusiasm. The students selected were: Lachlan Bailey-Yates, Lloyd James, Jade Donaldson and Georgie Whi ngton.

The Global Leadership Conven on is run by World Vision. The aim is to prepare students for leadership roles in their schools and communi es. Students are involved in simula on ac vi es to give them an idea of what it is like to live in a developing country. This year the country being supported is Rwanda.

Right now millions of people in Rwanda don’t have enough food to eat.

Most Rwandan people work in agriculture, but the country’s dense popula on and hilly terrain mean good farmland is scarce. Outdated farming techniques and poor infrastructure resul ng from the 1994 genocide, also contribute to insuffi cient harvests.

Many families experience regular food shortages, some mes for four to six months or more. In the Northern Province, child malnutri on is even more severe than elsewhere in the country. Children eat just one or two meals on a good day. Some days they have no food at all. They go to bed at night hoping sleep will take the pain of hunger away.

Our students were very moved by what they heard at the conven on. They will run the 40 Hour Famine at our school. You can see them in Term 3 to register and collect a sponsorship booklet. They will also be running some fun ini a ves to raise money which we will tell you about on weekly assemblies.

The 40 Hour Famine is not just about giving up food. You can give up anything you like for 40 hours. Some sugges ons are: technology, speaking and furniture. The aim is to raise as much money as you possibly can. The 40 Hour Famine takes place from 15-17 August, 2014. You can also register online, but be sure to join the Warners Bay High School group. We also have an Instagram account; so get involved and support each other. Search 40 Hour Famine WBHS.

We all hope you can be involved!

Mrs Hart, Lachlan Bailey Yates, Jade Donaldson, Lloyd James, Georgie Whi ngton.

___________________________________________________________________________________________BILL TURNER CUP REPORT The opening games of the Bill Turner Cup were eagerly an cipated by the Warners Bay students. St. Mary’s proved s ff opposi on in the fi rst half of the game, pu ng pressure on our defence and having the best of the early chances. Once our boys hit their stride there was no stopping the goals. Our fast paced forwards, Alex Williams and Jack Hardman, were dominant in a ack with Luke Mclachlan and Ares Gee providing the support. Both Jack Harman and Luke McLachlan were double goal scorers, with Cory Edwards pitching in with one goal. It was a solid defensive display with WBHS only conceding one consola on goal. Our only nega ve was the sad injury news for Harry Richardson who unfortunately broke his leg in a tackle. Warners Bay High players would like to wish Harry a speedy recovery and hope to see him back playing very soon.

Warners Bay played Toronto in the second game of the day and it was back to business immediately for Jack Hardman who fi nished the game with a hatrick of goals to help us win 5-1. Jensen Hunt and Kyson Brown were the other goal scorers, rounding off a very good performance. Alex Williams and Dareios Gee were excellent in defence. The team plays St. Pauls High School in Round 3.

CENSUS IN SCHOOLS Over the next few weeks Year 7 students will be asked to par cipate in a Census At School ques onnaire which is free and fun for students to complete. The aim of the census is to promote

sta s cal literacy amongst WBHS students. It contains 31 non-invasive ques ons about students’ preferences and ac vi es such as favourite types of music and how much me they spend on the Internet. The ques onnaire is not compulsory; however, the more students who take part, the richer the pool of data they can access through our Random Sampler for use in analysis and inves ga on. Students cannot be iden fi ed from their responses and none of the informa on collected by the ques onnaire will be used for research purposes by the ABS. I hope to be able to present some of the more interes ng facts and fi gures in the next Bay Bulle n.

LANGUAGESLANGUAGE PERFECTLanguage Perfect is an online languages vocabulary site that many of our language students have had access to from the beginning of the year. They can accumulate points as they learn, so we have been running term compe ons amongst the Years 9, 10 and 11 students.

In addi on, The World Series Championships were run over ten days between 19 – 30 May (as some parents will know full well….). We had many students beavering away, learning new words and cultural facts. The results were very pleasing with one student achieving an Elite Award (more than 10,000 points over 10 days!). She was given a good run for her money by four people achieving Gold Awards. Congratula ons to:

• Elite Award: Maddi Richards (Year 10) 10,018

• Gold Award: Cailen Hewi (Year 10) 7,171 Emily Sugg (Year 11) 4,545 Bayley Couzens (Year 9) 3,762 Ellie Nelmes (Year 9 ) 3,044

These are phenomenal results over such a short period of me. The cer fi cates will look good in their CV’s for a long me to come. We’re already looking forward to, and planning for next year’s compe on.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Yes, it’s that me of the year already when we welcome many overseas students into the school and into our homes. Nineteen students from Suginami High School will be with us from 23 July to 2 August. A big thank you to our hos ng Year 10’s and their families and to Mrs Karen Holmes who has organised a great metable for them again.

2 small raw beetroots, diff erent colours if possible (roughly 150g)2 carrots150g white cabbage1 fi rm pear½ a bunch of fresh mint½ a bunch of fresh fl at-leaf parsley6 small wholemeal tor lla wraps50g feta cheese for the dressing5 tablespoons natural yoghurt½ teaspoon English mustard3 teaspoons cider vinegar2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Method:

Wash the beetroots and carrots under cold running water, scrubbing with a scrubber to get rid of any dirt (there’s no need to peel them).

Pick off and discard the wispy ends from the beetroots.

Hold a box grater steady on a chopping board, then gripping the root end, coarsely grate the carrots, stopping before your fi ngers or knuckles get too close to the grater. Place the grated carrots into a large bowl.

Coarsely grate or fi nely slice the cabbage, then discard the core and add to the bowl.

Remove the stalk from the pear, coarsely grate (core and all), then place it into the bowl.

Finally, hold the root end of the beetroots and coarsely grate (you may want to wear rubber gloves for this), then add to the bowl.

Pick the mint and parsley leaves, then discard the stalks. Tear or fi nely chop the leaves on a board and add to the bowl.

Add all the dressing ingredients to a jam jar.

Put the lid securely on the jar and shake well.

Have a taste and see whether you think it needs a bit more yoghurt, vinegar or oil – you want it to be slightly too acidic, so that it’s s ll nice and zingy once you’ve dressed your rainbow salad.

Drizzle most of the dressing over the salad – just remember you can always add more but you can’t take it away, so be cau ous.

Divide the salad between the tor lla wraps, then crumble a li le feta over each.

Roll up the wraps, tucking them in at the sides as you go, then serve.

Flipped Learning Initiative at Warners Bay High

Flipped Learning at WBHS is all about turning learning upside down by doing homework in the classroom and lessons at home via videos and screen-casts developed by teachers. The theory behind this is that students can come to class having pre-learnt much of the basic material and

then be able to participate in more productive learning activities in the classroom with the assistance of the teacher who is now freed from the front of the room to assist small groups and give individual instruction. The trial is currently running in 7 Geography, 11 Business Studies, Maths and IPT with selected classes. For more detailed information you can go to the school website technology page to view lessons and download more information.

Informal feedback from students and parents has been overwhelmingly positive and we will be looking to roll out the initiative to more classes after a formal processing of feedback from all stakeholders. Other teachers currently employing Flipped Learning include Mr Glazebrook (IPT) and Mrs Mangovski (TAS faculty)

Mr T Husband HT Admin/VET/Technology Attendance

A big thankyou to all parents/carers that have encouraged their students to get to school on time or with a note if late. Our late student strategy which involves making all students accountable for their tardiness in getting to school on time through interviews and sanctions has proven tremendously successful. We have halved the number of students arriving after the bell for all years and dramatically reduced the number of senior late for Period 0 classes. This all leads to a lot less disruption for early classes and a more productive learning environment for all students. Remember if your student is away for long periods of time we have exemption forms which cover a wide range of circumstances. These can be obtained from the front office.

CULTURAL TOUR TO THE NAN TIEN TEMPLE

On Wednesday 14 – Thursday 15 May 2014, 26 students from Years 11 and 12 Society and Culture classes and Year 10 Interna onal Studies went on an excursion to experience diff erent belief systems.

Helensburgh’s Sri Venkateswara Temple is one of the most popular and impressive Hindu temples in the Southern Hemisphere, drawing visitors and Hindu devotees from all over New South Wales and the rest of Australia.

The small, isolated town of Helensburgh may seem like an odd choice for the loca on of such an important religious landmark, but it was chosen in 1978 as an abode for Lord Venkateswara and Goddess Lakshmi in accordance with Vedic principles. The fi ve requirements for the construc on of a Hindu temple are:

• Virgin land (no building can ever have stood there before)

• Island land (of course, Australia is the biggest island in the world. Also, there are no neighbouring buildings on the piece of land and it is made into an ‘island’ by the roads on each side of it.)

• Land surrounded by forest (no shortage of bushland surrounding Helensburgh)

• Close to a water source (the temple is located close to the area’s beau ful Kelly’s Falls and surrounding creek system)

• Close to the ocean (famous Stanwell Park Beach is only a ten-minute drive from the temple)

We then travelled to the Nan Tien Temple where we were expected to maintain noble silence, follow a strict vegetarian diet and partake in a number of cultural ac vi es including Tai Chi, Tea Chan and a specifi c Dharma talk (on Buddhist beliefs).

We received a guided tour from the knowledgable Bob (a lay Buddhist), which involved the unique visual experience of the buildings, statues, shrines and beau ful gardens. It also provided an insight into Chinese culture and the beliefs and prac ces of Humanis c Buddhism.

Their onsite museum holds a range of carvings on wood and

jade and a number of works demonstra ng developed skills such as pain ngs on a grain of rice and wri ng on a strand of human hair.

Students were kept busy by the Venerables (monks), even mastering the tea ceremony un l 9pm and were required to rise at 5.30am to partake in the monk’s daily life of drumming, chan ng and prayer. We then had a tai chi session before breakfast at 7:30am where students were grateful for the arrival of hash browns.

The Nan Tien Temple is situated at Berkeley - a suburb of Wollongong - in the state of New South Wales. It is one of the branch temples of Fo Guang Shan, founded in 1965 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, which has over 200 branches worldwide. “Nan Tien” in Chinese, literally means “Paradise of the South”. This is the biggest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere.

Since the opening of the temple in October 1995, it has become an a rac on for local and interna onal tourists and also acts as an important cultural centre bridging diff erent cultures.

We missed a photo opportunity with all of the students in their scarves covering their heads at the Lakemba Mosque (Imam Ali Bin Abi Taleb Mosque). The visit to the Mosque was very insigh ul; we took a tour of the premises and performed the procedures necessary in each of the separate wash rooms. It was an opportunity for teachers and students alike to ask any ques ons they had on the religion.

The Lebanese Muslim Associa on (LMA) was established in 1962 by a group of Lebanese immigrants, to provide social, religious, educa onal and recrea onal services for the Muslim community. In 1972 the construc on of the Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb Mosque was completed.

The LMA supports new ini a ves that advocate for social harmony in a mul cultural environment and raise awareness about Islam. Currently the LMA works with government agencies, not-for-profi t organisa ons and corporate partners to provide much needed community services.

We fi nished the second day with a trip to a tradi onal Lebanese Restaurant ‘Jasmins,’ where we feasted on Homo’s, Babaghanouj, Garlic, Tabouleh Salad, Pickled Salad, Shish Kebab, Ka a, Chicken, Falafel, Kebeh and baklava. Some people found the garlic dip irresis ble.

KOREAN CULTURE AND FOODOn Wednesday 18 June, thirty three Interna onal Studies students from Years 9 and 10 visited the “Taste of Korea” restaurant in Charlestown as part of our ongoing study of Asian culture.

We experienced authen c Korean cuisine in a modern se ng. Our lunch consisted of three diff erent tradi onal dumplings and two Korean Barbeques (chicken and beef) cooked with vegetables including onions and Chinese cabbage. The meals were served with sides of delicious short grain rice and a salad with a sweet soy sauce and sesame dressing.

The owner, Mr Yoon, and his staff visited each of the tables and shared their knowledge about other tradi onal foods eaten in typical Korean families. They also told us about the famous dish kimchi and its importance in everyday Korean life. It is a fermented vegetable dish loaded with garlic and chilli that is usually eaten by Koreans at every meal including breakfast.

Both classes are currently involved in a program of video conferences with schools in Korea and believe our cultural understanding and ability to par cipate in these conferences have been enhanced by this experience.

We all enjoyed the excursion and are glad we had the opportunity to sample Korean food and culture. We appreciate the work of our teachers Mrs Dieleman and

Ms Weston who organised the excursion and would like to thank them, along with Miss Lucas, for accompanying us on the day. We all hope we get the chance to visit again.

Ms Kendall DielemanInterna onal Studies.

CHESS TEAMThe school chess team played their most recent game against St Pius Xavier in Adamstown earlier in the month. A very hard fought contest was decided in Warners Bay High School’s favour as Hamish Broadhurst-Tynan in Year 12 won the fi rst table match. Both sides had a win and there were two games which ended in stalemates, so it certainly was the narrowest of victories. Warners Bay also won the sartorial stakes as St Pius was having an out-of-uniform day and looked somewhat casual in contrast to our students in their blazers! Both teams had a good morning and enjoyed some social games a er the compe on contest.

SHINE PROGRAMSHINE PROGRAMThe SHINE program for our female students at Warners Bay High has been implemented for the past fi ve years. This year we have had the wonderful opportunity to raise funds for the con nua on of the SHINE program for both our young people and a similar program for mothers. Our SHINE girls par cipated in the 5 kilometre walk. A total of a total of 180 kilometres were covered by par cipants.

The walk raised over $10 000, with Lilliana Bryson raising $140. Well done Lilliana! Molly Besgrove, Melody Campbell, Caitlin Haddleton-Burgess and Cassidy Clarke also par cipated. The fund raising had a total of 100 par cipants with 10 ladies walking the en re 180 kilometres. UNBELIEVABLE!

A big thank you to Kate Robinson for taking the girls on the walk and also the SHINE co-ordinators for making the SHINE program so worthwhile.
