Comparison Between Plug Valves and Ball Valves

When valve seats (soft/metal) havebeen damaged, the emergency sealant injection benefits is effectivefor a short time due to the small sealing area.

If the valve is cycled, a new sealant injection is required.Lubricant can be injected to achievea long term “zero leakage” performance.Valves can be cycled easily withoutany performance reduction.

Being a line contact the seatingarea of a Ball Valve, the sealing capability is soon damaged if thefluid is not very clean.

Being the seat area the completetapered surfaces of plug and body, only heavy damage can causea reduction of valve sealing.

High Pressure EffectsBall Valves Plug Valves

Non-metallic seating componentscan easily cause a sealing capabiltyfailure when subjected to a longburn time.

Due to the absence of non-metallicseat components, to the metallicbody-cover gasket and to the graphite stem gaskets, plug valveshave always shown a very high resistance to fire. Once the lubricant is burnt, the plug is still in close contact with the body to guarantee a good sealing result.

Sealing is not affected by line pressure: it depends only on springbehind seats.Ball valves can’t usually be opened against high differentialpressure in order to preserveseats integrity.

Due to the Pressure BalancedSystem, the inline pressure:• pushes the plug against body

seat,increasing the sealing performance;

• keeps the plug “pressurebalanced”, reducing the torquevalues.

Plug valves are designed and manufactured in order to withstandthe maximun differential pressuretorque without any problem.

Deposit of SolidsFloating seats can be packed and damaged by solids.

No body cavity in contact with seating surfaces: edge of body/plugbore works as cutter cleaning themating surfaces from every depositof solids.

Surface finish of ball is critical andseats are protected except duringoperation.

No critical surfaces are directly incontact with fluid.

They cannot be-entirely maintained from the outside.Injection of sealant will not restore a long sealing period, shutdownrequired.

All standard and most of the non-routine maintenance operations, including seat adjustment, can be carried out with valves under full pressure. No shutdown required.

MR-01-75 LatestEdition.Moreover the use of anelectroless nickel plating onplug surface provides more
