• LAFS and MAFS will be assessed with the new Florida Standards Assessments (FSA)

• Spring 2015 administration of middle school assessments will include:– English Language Arts (ELA): Grades 6-8– ELA Writing Component: Grades 6-8– Mathematics: Grades 6-8

Grades 6-8 will have Computer Based Testing for all of these assessments

What Are the Standards and Assessments For Science and Social Sciences?

• 2008 Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) remain for science and social sciences

• Science FCAT 2.0: Grade 8

• Civics End-of-Course (EOC) Exam: Grade 7 This is a computer based test

The Florida StandardsHow May I Help My Child?

• Read different types of books and informational text with your child

• Ask your child to find answers to questions in the text of books, newspaper articles, manuals, etc.

• Encourage your child to form and defend opinions by supporting these with facts, details and reasons from text

• Discuss mathematics ideas with your child have them explain these to you using pictures, graphs, etc.

• Visit the Florida Standards Assessment online portal at:

www.fsassessments.org to become familiar with the new assessments.

Before and After School Information

• Breakfast served from at 7:00 AM – 8:15 AM.

• If your child is not in Homeroom at 8:45 AM, they will be marked Tardy.

• All students must be picked up no later than 20 minutes following their scheduled dismissal unless they are participating in an after school activity or registered in the T.E.A.M.S. After School Program.

• The T.E.A.M.S. After School Program will supervise any student not picked up on time and will charge a $1.00 per minute service fee.

Parent / Teacher Conference Information

•Please call the school or email the teacher to request a conference.•Conferences with more than one teacher take place only on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00am or 2:45pm (high school) and 8:00am or 3:45pm (middle school). These conferences are scheduled through the Student Services Department.

Parent Portal

•Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ facilitates online monitoring of student progress. In order to access this tool, the parent must have a PIN Number. If you are new to Miami-Dade County Public Schools and do not have a PIN #, please stop by the Main Office tonight or during the week.

General School Policies

Volunteer Policy• Parents are required to complete thirty (30) volunteer

hours per family.• Parents wishing to volunteer must first register via the

School Volunteer Registration Program and must be cleared through Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Stop by the office tonight if you have any questions.

• We are always in need of supplies, i.e. paper, and welcome donations. Please deliver donations made to the school to the Main Office, not to the teacher. Items for a specific teacher will be sent to the teacher once volunteer hours are documented.

Attendance Policy

Students will be referred to the Attendance Review Committee when they reach an accumulation of five (5) unexcused absences in a semester course or ten (10) unexcused absences in an annual course.

A student is allowed FIVE (5) excused tardies. If a student exceeds TEN (10) excused tardies, the student will be issued a Student Case Management Referral Form (SCAM) for excessive tardies. Excessive tardies may affect the student’s enrollment status the following school year.

Academic Requirement

Academic achievement and good behavior are expected. As per the Parent Contract, students identified as requiring additional instruction and/or remediation, such as Saturday and after school tutoring, are required to attend all sessions.

Please review the School-wide Testing Calendar carefully. Please do not plan any family vacations or schedule appointments during these testing dates. It

is critical that all students are here for testing.
