It was great to welcome students and staff back this week, recharged for the start of the Spring term. Even during the first week back students have been diving straight back into some fantastic lessons. Year 7 have been busily developing eye/hand coordination and space awareness as they learn these skills in netball. Year 8 have got stuck in dissecting a pig’s heart in Science. They have also been investigating how writers generate new ideas when writing a book. In Food Preparation and Nutrition, Year 9 have been running a sensory analysis test using a range of fruit and vegetables. Year 10 have been studying how Germany tried to solve the problems they faced after the 1st World War. Year 11 have come back to their final full term at school. They have mock exams in a couple of weeks and have been revising hard in all their subjects. Good luck to those Year 11s who have their languages mock exams during the next 2 weeks. A couple of proud student mentions. Firstly, Charlie Power in Year 11 on the Shakespeare campus. He was selected to play for rugby for Hampshire U16s. He played against Dorset and Wiltshire teams and scored his first try! Also a huge well done to Callum Redfern who showed amazing community spirit on his way home from school this week. A local resident was struggling to move her car so Callum stopped and helped other residents to move the car for the lady. Awesome Callum! Finally, well done to our Year 10 Art and Photography students who, under the supervision of Mr Luxon, created some fantastic photographs of Eastleigh superimposed with 2nd World War imagery from Eastleigh’s heritage. This joint Art and History project came about after a generous donation from a parent, whose father served in the forces and was present on D-Day. Wow! What an amazing first week back! Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy New Year from all of us at Crestwood. We do hope you have had a great time over the festive break. This week has seen both campuses back into the swing of things. It was great to welcome students and staff back this week, recharged for the start of the Spring term.

🐶 PUPPY UPDATE 🐶 Hello everyone, Sherbet and Woody here!

Woody: It's so good to be back at school and great to see everyone too, I missed my school family but I have had the best Christmas. My home mummy was poorly over the holidays so I gave her lots of cuddles and both my sister *Lily, the black labrador* and I curled up together by her side to comfort her - cuddles really are the best medicine! I have had lots of fun at the stables too, lots of fresh air and lots of exercise to work off my delicious Christmas dinner! I thought you would all like to know that I have lost a few more baby teeth too; my mummy kept singing “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!” Haha, she’s very funny!

Sherbet: I had a wonderful Christmas with lots of lovely walks on the beach and my favourite walk down the Itchen getting super muddy. I practiced playing fetch in Fleming Park and made lots of new doggy friends. I also opened all my own Christmas presents and had a tasty turkey dinner. I couldn’t wait to get back to school to see everybody and to show off my new toy, which you can see in the photo above. Mum hides treats in it and I see how fast I can get them out. I lost my first tooth whilst playing with my brother Woody this week, everyone says Woody and I have grown a lot over the holidays.

Important News & Notices

MEDICINES IN SCHOOL Please can I remind parents and students, medicines, including paracetamol/ibuprofen, MUST be handed into reception/medical and not carried around school. Students may carry their own inhalers and epipens, but these are the only exceptions. CYCLING TO AND FROM SCHOOL Many of our students cycle to school and we thought it would be timely to remind you of our expectations: ● All cycles must be roadworthy. ● All students must wear a helmet and have a bike lock to secure their cycle, even in the allocated cycle sheds. ● All students must put their cycle’s in the lockable cycle sheds by E block at Shakespeare and next to T block at Cherbourg. ● Students must NOT leave their cycles by the main gates at Shakespeare, these are for visitors. They are also not as secure as the main cycle shed. ● Students are expected to walk with their cycles, for Health and Safety reasons, on school premises on entering and along the parade of shops in Boyatt Wood. ● The Senior Site Manager, Alan Hussey, will reserve the right to refuse any student to bring their cycle to school if they are deemed unsafe. Year 7 and 8 ENERGY DRINKS BAN It has come to our attention that a minority of Year 7s are consuming energy drinks before school. They are being purchased on their way to school from the local newsagent. We have in the past spoken to our local establishments; the CoOp agreed with us and has refused to sell them, unfortunately the local newsagents refused to support the efforts. Please can you reiterate to your children the the harm these drinks can cause and the long lasting effects it can have on them.

WATER BOTTLES We encourage our students to stay hydrated during the school day and are therefore asking parents/guardians to ensure they send their child into school with a bottle of water everyday. We have been providing plastic cups for children who forget to bring a bottle to school; this creates unnecessary waste, is environmentally unfriendly and is an extra expense for the school. Please note we will no longer be providing plastic cups. Thank you. HOT CHOCOLATE FRIDAY At Crestwood we believe in recognising positive behaviour. Our students are at the heart of everything we do and positive recognition lets our pupils know that their hard work and their excellent attitude is valued. The idea of Hot Chocolate Friday is for the Head and the Heads of School to invite students who have gone 'above and beyond'. It’s a way of thanking them for their hard work and commitment towards their studies, and for their service to the community. And what better way to end the working week with a lovely warm mug of hot chocolate* and a chat with SLT in the Head's office during break time! *Alternatives available!

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE The students are keen to deliver assemblies on 'Go Green', they are happy to dispose of the recyclable paper from their tutor groups each week. They discussed: single use plastics, students suggested raising money to buy everyone a named Crestwood water bottle and ban selling plastic drinks bottles in the canteen! Finally they discussed moving to recycled paper for everything except official letters. ACTION: Green bins to be ordered. Our council representatives have gone away to discuss the above with their tutor groups. Will will update you with any further action.

If your child has any Vomiting or Diarrhoea please ensure you inform the Attendance line. You will need to keep your child away from school for 48 hours after their last episode of vomiting or diarrhoea. Norovirus, sometimes known as the winter vomiting bug, is the most common stomach bug in the UK, affecting people of all ages. The virus, which is highly contagious, causes vomiting and diarrhoea. As there is no specific cure, you have to let it run its course, but it should not last more than a couple of days. The period from when you are infected to when you start to show symptoms (known as the incubation period) usually lasts 12-48 hours. During this time, you may be infectious to other people. Having norovirus can be an unpleasant experience, but it's not generally dangerous and most people make a full recovery within a couple of days, without having to see a doctor. What should I do? If you have norovirus, the following steps should help ease your symptoms: • Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration • Take Paracetamol for any fever, aches and pains • If you feel like eating, eat foods that are easy to digest • Stay at home. Don’t go to the doctor, because Norovirus is contagious and there is nothing the doctor can do while you have it. • Contact your GP by telephone to seek advice if your symptoms last longer than a few days or if you already have a serious illness Don't worry if you are pregnant and you get norovirus: there is no risk to your unborn child. How to stop it spreading The virus is easily spread by contact with an infected person, especially through their hands. You can also catch it through contaminated food or drink or by touching contaminated surfaces or objects. The following measures should help prevent the virus from spreading further: • Wash your hands frequently • Do not share towels and flannels • Disinfect any surfaces that an infected person has touched. • Wash any clothing or bedding that could have become contaminated. Wash the items separately and on a hot wash to ensure the virus is killed. • Keep the toilet area clean. • Avoid eating raw, unwashed produce.

It has been such a lot of fun seeing our lovely students in the morning for their breakfast! Numbers are increasing daily which is fantastic! What a brilliant way to start the school day!
