"My favorite thing about Explor-eBook is the Fluency Checks because they allow the teacher to have a more consistent record of the students' oral fluency development. Also, the teacher can share them with parents and help them understand what is meant by oral reading fluency and how important it is to their child's reading development." Dr. Mel PaceOsceola County, Florida

"The audio support embedded in the platform is a great resource for my ELLs to hear modeled fluent reading and has increased their language acquisition." Heather M.TeacherTexas

Standards

Reading: Read closely to ask and answer questions about a text and to make logical inferences from the text.

Writing: Choose the best type of writing to clearly communicate to a specific audience (e.g., opinion/argument, informative/explanatory, fiction or nonfiction narrative) and include valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient textual evidence.

Listening and Speaking: Contribute to group discussions and actively respond to questions and comments (e.g., give reasons in support of opinions, respond to others’ ideas).

eReader Tools and Features

Note Tool

Students often use sticky notes in print books to make important notes. When they are reading a digital book, they can use the Note Tool to record their thoughts, inferences, questions, and comments.

Highlighter Tool

One benefit to reading digital books is that your students can “write” in them! Students can highlight vocabulary words, key details, and other important aspects of the book.

Making Inferences

Whole-Group Lesson

1. Ask students how they make inferences. Guide the discussion toward the realization that they think deeply about the text they have read as well as the images on the pages. Then, using the text and images, they draw conclusions based on what they think.

2. Tell students you are going to make an inference about the opening pages of a digital book. Read the first few pages of the book aloud while displaying the book for them. Use a think-aloud strategy to talk about what the text says and what you see in the images. Suggest some inferences you can make based on the book.

3. Click on the Note Tool. Click on the location in the book where you want the note to be placed. On the note, type one of the inferences you modeled for students.

4. Say to students, “When I think about the text and images on the page, I realized that one part really helped me make an inference.” Specifically point out the text and/or image that was the key detail or two that helped you make your sample inference.

5. Click on the Highlighter Tool. Choose a color for the highlighter. Highlight the key text and/or image that helped you make the inference you typed in the Note Tool.

6. Explain specifically how you made the inference and how the details helped you. If necessary revisit the note or highlighting to be more specific in your inference or chosen details.

7. Review how you used the Note Tool to type an inference about a particular part of the text and then later used the Highlighter Tool to record the specific details on which you formed your inference.

Use scripted lesson plans that address specific reading skills.
