The SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 events consist a total of 1000 points distributed evenly in the different static and dynamic events. The 5th edition of SUPRA SAEINDIA, India’s

biggest formula student competition was kicked

off with the oath ceremony at the Formula 1

track at Buddh International Circuit in Greater

Noida on July 4, 2016.

The oath for the student formula competition

was administered by Mr. Balraj Bhanot,

Chairman, Transport Engineering Division

Council (TEDC) of BIS Along with Mr. P K

Banerjee, Convener SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016.

SUPRA is being Organized annually by SAEINDIA,

the event provides a platform for students to

apply their engineering skills to design and

construct a Formula category vehicle as per

defined performance and safety specifications.

SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 comprises series of static

and dynamic events spread over five days,

concluding with a final endurance test and a

valedictory function on 9th July 2016.

The SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 events consist a

total of 1000 points distributed evenly in the

different static and dynamic events.

Mr.Narain Karthikeyan, the first Indian

Formula 1 driver, visited SUPRA 2016 on July

year, which also saw sponsorships from Total,

BPCL, Castrol, Shell, AVL, Siemens, Altair, Ansys,

MRF, CEAT, GKN, Horiba, Dassault Systems,

Hindustan University, Tripti Hospitality,

Eleation, Continental and Viper Hobbies.

event for its fifth consecutive year, which sees

students from engineering colleges across the

country battle it out against each other in their

quest to apply their technical knowledge on the

ground by conceptualizing and developing a

formula racing car.

Guarded by a standard rule book, the Formula

Supra requires teams to build a single-seat race

vehicle, using an engine having a maximum

capacity of 600cc. With numerous other

guidelines over the construction, dynamics and

safety of the vehicle, students attempt their

The competition was between 26 teams in the final

round. Only 12 cars completed the race.

The SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 ended up with the valedictory

ceremony. The valedictory session was attended by Chief

Guest, Dr.David Schutt, CEO, SAE International; Mr. C V

Raman, Executive Director, Engineering, Maruti Suzuki

India; Mr. R S Kalsi, Executive Director, Marketing and

Sales, MSIL; Dr. Aravind Bharadwaj, President, SAEINDIA,

Mr.Prashant K. Banerjee, Deputy Executive Director

(Technical), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers

(SIAM). Other dignitaries included Mr.Murli Iyer, Global

Advisor, SAE International, Mr. I V Rao, Executive

Advisor, MSIL and experts from the Automotive

Industries.

SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 - Award Winners.

SUPRA SAEINDIA 2016 held over six days, from July 4th to

9th July 2016 drew a record number of participants this

year, with over 3500 engineering students from 125

teams participating. However, of these teams, 46

qualified for the technical round and 26 made it to the

final round in which the cars faced off.

The event was judged by a panel comprising 200 eminent

experts from the automotive industry, including four

international experts – Mr. Benjamin Moeller, Mr.

Christian Thomas Amersbach, Mr. Christoph Martin

Beisswanger from Germany and Ms. Anastasia

Potrashkova from Russia.

There were 5 laps of 5.5 kilometre on the main track of

Buddh International Circuit. Before the start of the race

the drivers of the different teams were given the proper

briefing which was followed with the track walk so that

the drivers gets an idea of the main endurance track.

The event then moved to Pune, where Mr. Ramesh S

Pasarija, Deputy Director, SAEINDIA Western Section

welcomed the gathering and gave a holistic

presentation on the given topic providing a multi-

dimensional view of what is in store and what would be

the new developments, and then handed over to Mr.

Sachin Sanghi, Director – Technical, Siemens PLM

Software who moderated the panel discussion. Again,

an eminent set of panellists brought their vast

experience to weigh in on the challenges and

possibilities for the industry:

eminent panel.

The two roundtables at Chennai and Pune provided the

participants interesting perspectives as well as ample

insights and food for thought about the future.

SAEINDIA, in association with Siemens PLM Software,

successfully conducted two automotive roundtables

recently:

- Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Radisson Blu Hotel

GRT Chennai.

- Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at The Westin Koregaon

Park Pune.

The Automotive Round Tables were well attended with

over 120 senior industry professionals in attendance

between the two locations. The deliberations during the

roundtables provided many insights on the current industry

challenges as well as the way forward for developing smart,

sustainable and safe vehicles.

Dr. Arunkumar Sampath, General Manager, Mahindra &

Mahindra kicked off the proceedings at Chennai and spoke

about industry trend, technology update, new

developments in autonomous and connected vehicles and

design changes likely to emerge in the foreseeable future.

He also identified the challenges faced by the industry with

a change in regulations from BS IV to BS VI which will bring

about a sea change in the mobility industry.

Dr. Aravind Bharadwaj, Sr. Vice President and Head –

Technology (TPDS), Mahindra & Mahindra then took the

discussion forward by sharing his perspectives on the

challenges and implications for the industry. This clearly set

the tone for the panel discussion which followed the

opening address. The panel was moderated by Mr. Gautam

Dutta, Sr. Director – Marketing, Siemens PLM Software and

SKIP - WELDING TECHNOLOGY FOR BAJA &

SUPRA VEHICLES :

SAEINDIA Southern Section conducted Student

Knowledge Improvement Program (SKIP) on

“Welding Technology for BAJA & SUPRA vehicles” on

2nd & 3rd July 2016 at SAEINDIA Southern Section,

Guindy, Chennai. Mr. T. Kasiraja, MC Member, SAEISS

inaugurated the program and introduced the Speaker

Dr. D. Muruganandam, Professor, Sri Sairam

Engineering College and Mr. Sasianand

Parthasarathy, Fronius India Pvt Ltd., to the

participants.

Mr. Sasianand Parthasarathy explained about welding

power source and he explained types of electrodes and

said that electrodes are selected based on the welding

material and he showed some images about welding

material, frames and explained about them. He gave

detailed explanation about the electrodes like Rutile

electrodes, Basic electrodes, CrNi electrodes, Cellulose

electrodes, Aluminium electrodes, Cast iron electrodes,

Arc air gouging and explanation about Metal Inert Gas

Welding [MIG], Metal Active Gas Welding [MAG /CO2].

On 3rd July 2016, Dr. D. Muruganandam started his

session. He explained about defects in welding such as

Lack of fusion, Lack of Penetration or excess

penetration, Porosity, Inclusions, Cracking, Undercut,

and Lamellar tearing.

At the end of the session Mr. Sasianand Parthasarathy

& Dr. D. Muruganandam distributed the certificates to

the participants.

KRT TREK REPORT:

We are glad to inform you that SAEINDIA Southern

Section - Mahindra World City Division conducted KRT

TREK program at Yelagiri Hills, Vellore district on 2nd &

3rd July 2016. Members of SAEINDIA Southern Section

participated in the event and made the program a grand

success. Mr. S. Shanmugam, Vice Chairman, SAEISS took

the session and shared the activities of SAEINDIA Southern

Section to the participants.

On 2nd July 2016 night the participants sat near the camp

fire and shared their knowledge. Few participants also

confirmed their willingness to be a champion for the

existing events of SAEINDIA Southern Section.

On 3rd July 2016, all the participants started the trek at

Swamimalai. Mr. M.P. Prasad conducted the team

building to the participants. Participants thanked the

organizer for conducting such a wonderful program. Mr.

C. Pradeep, Divisional Chairman, Mahindra World City

and Mr. R. Balasubramanian distributed the certificate to

the participants.

Mr. S. Shanmugam, Vice Chairman SAEISS presented the

memento to Mr. M.P. Prasad for his contribution.

CHAMPION LEADERSHIP TRAINING PHASE 1:

SAEINDIA Southern Section organized the Champion

Leadership Training phase 1 on 16th & 17th July 2016

at SAEINDIA Southern Section office, Guindy.

Dr.E.Rajasekar, Secretary - SAEISS welcomed all the

participants to the Champion Leadership Training

phase 1 and gave an overview about SAEINDIA and

detailed about ongoing and future activities of SAEISS

to all the participants.

Mr.S.Selvamani, Past Chairman, SAEISS enlightened the

participants how to execute, the importance of

execution, and their elements. He also briefed about

budget, need for budget and finally made the

Champions to visualize how to make money to work.

Mr.C.Pradeep, Chairman MWC Division, started the

session by stating the difference between project and

program and project management cycle. Mr.D.Balaji,

KRT Trek Champion conducted the Team building

activities which made the participants to achieve their

team’s goal.

Mr.C.Sundaravadivelu, TQM Expert reviewed the SOP’s

of all the activities of SAEISS and guided the champions

how to formulate the SOP. Mr.S.Shanmugam, Vice

Chairman SAEISS clarified the Champions about the

Structure of SAEISS, Governing Council & Managing

Committee. He distributed the certificates to all the

participants.

Mr. T. Kasiraja, Joint Treasurer SAEISS thanked the

speakers and all the participants and requested their

continued support for the future programs.

LECTURE MEETING – MODEL BASED SYSTEMS

ENGINEERING & SIMULATION:

On 8th July 2016, Friday SAEINDIA Southern Section

organized the Lecture Meeting at Siemens Industry Software,

Guindy. Mr. T. Kasiraja, Joint Treasurer, SAEISS gave a speech

about ongoing SAEISS activities and future activities to all the

participants and invited them to be an active SAEISS

Volunteers. He introduced the speaker Mr. Renaud Meillier,

Director – System Simulation Business Development,

SIEMENS PLM Software.

Mr. Renaud Meillier, briefed about the Lab Amesim to the

participants. He explained the simulation process of various

equipments with his unique presentation. He also explained

about Model Predictive Control method of “Optimal

Trajectory Planning for Driver Assistance System”.

He urged the importance of simulation in automotive

industries to reduce emission and to increase the efficiency

of the vehicle by reducing the fuel consumption. He showed

simulation of Excavator which has been prepared for

efficient way of handling the machine. He covered major

simulation done by SIEMENS Vehicle Energy Management

Test Centre and its capabilities to optimize seemingly

conflicting requirements for fuel economy and drivability as

well as noise, vibration and handling (NVH) comfort for next-

generation systems and vehicles.

Mr. Kumaran Bharatheedasan, Lecture Meeting

Champion, SAEISS thanked the speaker for his innovative

speech and presented a memento to the speaker as a token

of gratitude. Mr. Aiyappan Ramamoorthy, MC Member,

SAEISS thanked the speaker and all the participants for

participating in the lecture meeting and requested their

continued support for the future programs also.

Senthilkumar, Secretary - SAEISS Chennai Division to

take the Dais.

Mr. Khader Basha, Chairman, SAEISS - Chennai Division

welcomed all the members of SAEINDIA Southern

Section for the inaugural function of Chennai Division.

Dr. E. Rajasekar congratulated the SAEISS - Chennai

Division Management Committee Members and

introduced them to the Section Management

Committee members.

Mr. K Ganapathy Subramaniam invited all the

members in the dais to lighten the kuthuvilakku. Dr. S.

Sundareshan, Director General R&D (Retd), CVRDE

expressed his gratitude about the inaugural function

of Chennai Division. Mr. R. Senthilkumar, Secretary

Chennai Division thanked all for attending the

inaugural function and making the event grand

success.

CHAMPION LEADERSHIP TRAINING PHASE 2:

SAEINDIA Southern Section organized the Champion

Leadership Training phase 2 on 30th & 31st July 2016 at

SAEISS office, Guindy. Dr.E.Rajasekar, Secretary - SAEISS

welcomed all the participants to the Champion Leadership

Training Workshop. He gave an overview about SAE,

SAEINDIA and SAEISS. He then briefed about ongoing SAEISS

activities and future activities to all the Champions.

Mr.C.Sundaravadivelu, TQM Expert made the champions to

understand the concept of SOP. He explained how the SOP

must be formulated for the events. Mr. T Kasiraja, Visteon,

briefed about the do`s and don’ts during the program/event

execution and shared the best practices and his experiences

to new champions.

Mr.C.Pradeep, Chairman MWC Division, handled the Project

management session and he advised the Champions to

follow Work Breakdown Structure to handle the programs

with ease. He ended the session with a thought provoking

video.

Mr.M.P.Prasad, RNTBCI conducted the Team building

activities. He made the champions to realize their struggles

and supported them in making the champions think and act

better.

Mr.S.Shanmugam, Director DDIPL, pointed out the necessity

to prepare the budget and calendar for the activities and

revealed the guidelines and situations to be considered in

preparing the budget and the activity calendar. He

distributed the certificates to all the participants.

TOPTECH - DIESEL ENGINE TECHNOLOGY :

Toptech program on ‘‘Diesel Engine Technology” was

organized by SAEINDIA Southern Section on 19th &

20th August 2016, Friday & Saturday at Hotel Lemon

Tree, Chennai. Mr.S.Shanmugam, MD in DDIPL

welcomed all the participants and the speaker on

behalf of SAEINDIA Southern Section. He then

introduced Mr. C. Prakash, Training and

Development, Ashok Leyland speaker to the

participants and handed over the session to Mr. C.

Prakash.

Mr. C. Prakash started the session with the basics of

diesel engine technology. In the later session, he

explained the technology in depth. He then explained

every aspects of the Diesel engine technology to

participants very well. He also gave more video

presentation for the participants regarding the

testing conditions and Emission control of diesel

engine. He also answered all questions raised by the

participants. The participants were also stunned with

his calibre and the way he took the session.

Mr. S. Senthilkumar champion of Toptech program

and Mr. B. Srinivasan MC Member SAEISS took over

the valedictory session on the day two evening and

thanked everyone for attending the Toptech

program. He also thanked the speaker for his

knowledge sharing and presented him with the

memento.

Mr. B. Srinivasan distributed the certificates to the

participants of Diesel engine technology. At the end

of the session, participants thanked the faculty for his

wonderful session and appreciated his energetic

presentation.

CHENNAI DIVISION LECTURE MEETING:

SAEINDIA Southern Section Chennai Division organized its

first Lecture Meeting program on ‘‘Evolution of Diesel

Engines for Automobiles” on 13th Aug 2016, Saturday at

Madras Management Association, Chennai. Mr. K.

Ganapathy Subramaniam, Divisional Manager, Marketing

introduced Dr. P.A. Laxminarayanan, Chief Technical Advisor,

M/s. Simpson & Co. Ltd. to the participants. Mr. M. Khader

Basha, Chennai Divisional Chairman invited the speaker for

his lecture on the topic.

Dr. P.A. Laxminarayanan started his lecture on Evolution of

Diesel Engines for Automobiles. Dr. P.A. Laxminarayanan

explained about the euro 3 to euro 6. He started to explain

the emission standard from euro 3 and then explaining about

Transport Chain Cycle in Euro 3.

Dr. P.A. Laxminarayanan continued his lecture from euro 4 to

euro 6. He explained all the important emission controls and

its norms to be followed to meet the euro standard. He also

explained how the standards can be reached. Dr. P.A.

Laxminarayanan’s knowledge on the topic and experience on

the field is well recognized in his presentation. The way he

presented the lecture was very much welcomed by the

participants and every one amazed on his knowledge. During

the discussion session, he explained and clarified very well.

he has given for sharing such a knowledgeable session

on Automotive Crashworthiness.

Mr. Sridhar Lingan started his lecture on the topic

“AUTOMOTIVE CRASHWORTHINESS” with the

motivation for vehicle safety by showing the WHO

research reports on the global accidents statistics and

the Vehicle Crash statistics which will be the key factor

in the area of vehicle safety development.

SKIP - AUTOMOTIVE TRANSMISSION:

SAEINDIA Southern Section organized SKIP program on

“Automotive Transmission” on 19th and 20th August 2016 at

SAEINDIA Southern Section, Guindy, Chennai.

Mr. B.Senthilkumar, SKIP Champion handled the

inauguration session and introduced Mr. R. Venugopal,

DRDO Fellow, CVRDE to all the participants.

Mr. R. Venugopal started the program with a brief

Introduction about Automotive Transmission and Objective

of this program. Then he explained on types of gear and their

categories like spur gear, spur rack, helical gear, helical rack,

double helical gear, straight bevel gear, spiral bevel gear,

screw gear and warm gear.

He explained about gear cost vs. quality. In the afternoon

session, speaker explained about synchromesh gear box,

synchronizer mechanism, simple epicycle gear train and

compound epicycle gear train.

Mr. R. Venugopal, the speaker started the second day

session with explaining about the transmission control like

brake system, neutral start switch, throttle position sensor,

water temperature sensor, speed sensor, stoplight switch,

over dive main switch and control of lock-up.

Dr. D. Muruganandam, MC Member handled the valedictory

session. He thanked the speaker for his excellent

presentation and the participants and distributed the

certificates to the participants. He also presented the

COCHIN DIVISION INAUGURATION:

SAEINDIA Southern Section – Cochin Division Inauguration

ceremony was organised on 27th of August 2016 at Rajagiri

College of Engineering & Technology, Cochin. Two technical

talks on the latest advancements in automotive field were

also made by eminent speakers. Mr. Benkim B A, Treasurer,

SAEISS - Cochin Division, welcomed the gathering and

introduced Dr. E. Rajasekar, the speaker to the participants

and handed over the session to him for the lecture on

“Automotive Sensors and their Applications”.

Dr. E. Rajasekar, Secretary - SAEISS made a very good

introductory speech on SAE’s mission and vision. He took a

very promising lecture on the activities of SAEISS. After a

small break Dr. E. Rajasekar gave an interesting lecture on

Automotive Sensors and their Applications; the lecture was

very useful to the members since it was included with many

modern technological sensors and their working. Mr. Francis

Augustine Joseph thanked the speaker for his lecture and Dr.

Manoj Tharyan, Faculty advisor, SAE Collegiate club of RSET,

presented him with a memento, as a token of gratitude.

The dignitaries occupied the dais for the inaugural session.

Dr. Thankachan T. P, HOD, Mechanical department, RSET,

welcomed all the dignitaries and the participants to the

inauguration of Cochin Division. All the dignitaries

inaugurated the Cochin Division by lighting the lamps. Mr. S.

Sriraman, Chairman SAEISS gave the inaugural address. Dr. E.

Rajasekar introduced all the MC members of Cochin Division

to the participants. Dr. E. Rajasekar, Secretary SAEISS wished

them for their future activities and the growth of Cochin

Division.

The day 1 Program began with the welcome address

from Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem. They

gave a warm welcome to all the participants & the

Resource person, MC Member and Champion

present at the venue. Head of the Department

welcomed the Resource person and MC Member

SAEISS.

Mr. R. Armstromg, MC Member - SAEISS & Mr. S.

Shanmugam Director, DDIPL addressed Host College

and gave brief Introduction about SAE Trek.

SAEINDIA Southern Section appreciated the

Knowledge Institute of Technology for hosting the

prestigious Trek program in their college premises.

Mr. S. Shanmugam presented the memento to the

host college.

After the Inauguration Engineering Design process

was started by Mr. S. Shanmugam. He explained the

various design fundamentals to the participants.

Participants were divided into 7 teams. He explained

the objectives & purpose of the challenge, what are

the requirements & expectation from each teams.

Teams planed & designed the toy, using all the

fundamentals of Science then testing of their design

in front of the Resource person and Students making

note of various parameters to compare the results.

On Day 2 all participants along with volunteers went

for trekking to Yercaud Hills. Mr. S. Shanmugam, Mr.

R. Armstrong and Dr. E. Rajasekar distributed to the

certificate to the participants after the Trek.

KRT & SAE TREK:

We are glad to inform you that SAEINDIA Southern Section

conducted KRT TREK hosted by Knowledge Institute of

Technology at Yarcaud Hills, Salem District on 27th & 28th

August 2016. Members of SAEINDIA Southern Section of

various organizations participated in the event and made the

program a grand success.

Dr. M. Sathyanathan, HOD, Knowledge Institute of

Technology welcomed the dignitaries and the participants

and others for the SAE KRT Trek program. Dr. M. Thangavelu,

Placement Trainer KIOT presented the memento for Mr. S.

Mr. S. Shanmugam, Managing Director, DDIPL thanked

Trek program in their organization and presented the

memento to the Dr. M. Thangavelu, Placement Trainer,

KIOT. Mr. S. Shanmugam & Mr. R. Armstrong, MC member -

SAEISS, conducted the Engineering Design Process for KRT

trek participants. Every participants of trek enjoyed and learnt

the engineering concepts by building a jet toy. In the process

of designing a jet toy, they build a toy, tested its performance,

measured its accuracy and speed it can travel with different

nozzles and different weight loads.

On 28th August 2016 all the participants started to Trek at

6.00 A.M. from the hosting college and reached the Yercaud

Hills, Salem District at 8.00 A.M after having the breakfast

between the natures and started the SAE KRT Trek. Dr. E.

Rajasekar, Secretary -SAEISS joined the SAE KRT Trek.

SKIP - AUTOMOTIVE TRANSMISSION:

SKIP program on topic of “Off Highway and Special Types of

Vehicles” was organised by SAEINDIA Southern Section on

10th & 11th September 2016 at SAEISS, Guindy, Chennai.

The program started with the inauguration of SKIP Program.

Mr. T. Kasiraja, Joint Treasurer – SAEISS delivered welcome

address. He introduced Dr. E. Rajasekar to the participants.

Dr. E. Rajasekar started the program with a brief Introduction

about Off Highway and Special Types of Vehicles. He

explained about requirements of Off Highway Vehicles with

slides & Video. He explained the working of various vehicles

video demonstrations, the participants are able to visualize

the vehicles performance and their working.

He also explained the working mechanism of Dump trucks,

Excavators, Bull dozers, Military tanks, Loaders, Wheeled and

Crawler Tractors, Tree cutters, Scrappers and Bush cutters to

the participants. Then he also explained the technical features

of each vehicle.

During the valedictory session Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman -

SAEISS being a part of Tractor manufacturer, he explained the

participants about his vast experience and the technical

features of the Tractors. Then all the participants shared their

feedback to Dr. E. Rajasekar and Mr.S.Sriraman.

Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman - SAEISS distributed the certificates

to the participants and also felicitated the speaker with the

memento as a token of appreciation for conducting such a

value added program to the student community and making

the event a grand success.

Division on 17th September 2016, Saturday at

Madras Management Association, Chennai. Mr. R.

Balasubramanian, Secretary SAEISS MWC Division

welcomed the speaker and the participants to the

lecture meeting. He invited the speaker for his

auspicious lecture meeting.

Mr. K. N. Balaji started his lecture on the topic

“Mobility - Automotive user experience and

expectation” which will be the key factor in

automobile user expectation from industry. The

speaker vowed the participants with his exemplary

talks about the automotive user experience and

expectation which can be implemented as the user

expects the safety and efficiency of vehicles. His

presentation is totally different from others because

he used cartoon pictures and templates to explain

technical terms. He made the lecture a grand success

by visualizing stunning images and videos to garner

the participant’s attention.

CHAMPION LEADERSHIP TRAINING PHASE 3:

SAEISS organized the Champion Leadership Training Phase 3

on 17th & 18th September 2016 at SAEINDIA Southern Section

office, Guindy. Mr. T. Kasiraja, Joint Treasurer - SAEISS

welcomed all the participants and introduced Dr. E. Rajasekar,

the speaker.

Dr. E. Rajasekar, gave an overview about SAE International,

SAEINDIA and SAEISS. He then explained the need of society

and the expectations from champions and briefed about

ongoing SAEISS activities and future activities to all the

Champions. Mr. S. Sriraman, Chairman SAEISS gave his views

about Leadership skill to be developed by the champions. He

discussed about the need for the champions and their

dedication to execute the activities. Mr. C. Pradeep,

Chairman, SAEISS MWC Division, handled the Project

management session and two case studies were made and

the Project management session was handled more

interactively and discussions on real life current scenario were

made.

Mr. M.P. Prasad, Champion – Team Building made the

champions to realize their struggles and supported them in

making the champions think and act better. Mr. T Kasiraja

briefed about the do`s and don’ts during the program/event

execution and shared the best practices and his experiences

to new champions. Mr.S. Shanmugam, Mentor - SAEISS

clarified the Champions about the Structure of SAEISS,

Governing Council and Managing Committee. He pointed out

the necessity to prepare the budget and calendar for the

activities. Mr. C. Sundaravadivelu, TQM Expert made the

champions to understand the concept of SOP. And how the

SOP must be formulated for the events. They together gave

the certificates to the participants.

INNOVISTA 2016:

SAEISS Madurai Division organized a state level engineering college student project competition “INNOVISTA 2016” on 17th September 2016 at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, Dindigul in association with TAFE, Madurai. During the inauguration Mr. V. Srinivasan, Sr. Associate VP, TAFE, Mr. Sivakumar, GM - Materials, TAFE, Ms. Chhaya Balasubramanian, HR Manager, TAFE and other dignitaries from colleges took the seats on Dais. Mr. V. Srinivasan inaugurated INNOVISTA 2016 by lighting the Kuthuvillaku with the other dignitaries and he delivered the inaugural speech. Dr.M.Uthayakumar, Treasurer, SAEISS, Madurai division delivered welcome address. The Presidential address was delivered by Dr.N.Mahendran, Principal-in-charge, PSNACET. Dr.D.Vasudevan, HOD/Mech.Engg., PSNACET and Mr.Sivakumar, TAFE felicitated the gathering. Dr.Kannan Rajendran, Secretary, SAEISS, Madurai division delivered vote of thanks. An exclusive live demonstration of tractors have been performed by Mr.Arul Anandakuamar and Mr.Arsad of TAFE. Totally 160 abstracts have been received out of which 36 projects have been selected for final display. The first three teams have been awarded with a memento and cash prize. Apart from that five teams have been given with consolation prize. In the concluding session, Mr.V.Srinivasan invited the selected teams to TAFE for a special presentation session and he encouraged them to take the projects to the next level. All the participants have been issued with participation certificates. The entire arrangements were taken care by a team of student & faculty volunteers from PSNA College of Engg. & tech., Dindigul.

CONFERENCE:

SAEINDIA, Bengaluru section supported PMI, Bangalore

chapter, in conducting Project Management Practitioners'

Conference 2016 and the topic was ‘Architecting Project

Management for Enterprise Agility ‘from July 14-16 in

Bengaluru. In its 11th year, the Conference offered a great

combination of sharing, learning and networking

opportunities for professionals from all industries involved in

projects. Spread over a period of three days, the Conference

brought Keynote Speeches, Case Studies, Panel Discussions

and multiple tracks of Professional Paper Presentations.

ADMINISTARTIVE & TECHNICAL COMMITTEE

MEETING - AERO COMPETITION:

SAEINDIA Bengaluru section (SAEIBS) had an administrative &

technical committee meeting regarding the aero competition

at Sri Venkateshwara College of engineering, Bengaluru.

Meeting was chaired by SAEIBS chairman Mr. J.Munirathnam

highlighting the importance of aero competition in Bengaluru.

TECH TALK & MEMBERSHIP DRIVE:

A technical talk with the support of NVIDIA Graphics

Pvt. Ltd., and organized at Continental corporation

followed by membership drive. The event was well

attended by the continental employees. The talk was

on the topic “Technology Trends in the Autonomous

Mr.Dinesh and Mr.Vasudev Muthu, member of Executive

council of the section and members of the technical

committee of the competition also interacted with the

students.

Mr. Purushotham Joshi & Mr. Rakesh D. R from the section

were also in the program. More than 250 students and faculty

attended the program.

It is planned to conduct 2 -3 more such awareness program

across Karnataka to make students understand the

importance of such competitions which will give them hands

on experience.

DINNER MEETING - SAEINDIA PRESIDENT:

A dinner meet was organized by the MC of SAEINDIA,

Bengaluru section honouring the newly elected President of

SAEINDIA, Dr.Malhotra.

It was an opportunity for the MC and the President to know

each other.

The members of the MC introduced themselves to the

President. Mr.Venkatraj, Advisor to President also attended

the meeting.

TECH TALK - FUELS, STANDARDS,

REGULATORY ASPECTS & BIO FUELS:

A technical talk on BS 6 fuel, "Fuels, Standards,

Regulatory aspects, Bio Fuels” was delivered by

Dr.R.KMalhotra, President, SAEINDIA on 26/9/2016

at General Motors Technical Centre India (GMTCI) in

Bengaluru.

AWIM MASTER TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM:

AWIM (A World In Motion) Master Teachers & Volunteers

Training Program” was conducted successfully 8th & 9th July

2016 at ARAI, Pune with the focus on Skimmer and Jet-Toy

activities. Around 75 participants including Industry

Volunteers, Student Volunteers & Teachers witnessed.

Mr. Ramesh. S. Pasarija, welcomed all the participants and

the training was inaugurated by chief guest Dr. David Schutt,

CEO, SAE International and Mr. Murli Iyer, Executive Advisor –

Global, SAE International; Mr. Shrikanth R. Marathe,

Immediate past Chairman of SAEINDIA Western Section

(SAEIWS); Prof. P. B. Joshi, Vice Chair, Student Activities of

SAEIWS; Mr. B. V. Shamsundara, Treasurer of SAEIWS and Dr.

K. C. Vora, Co-ordinator of SAEIWS were also present.

Dr. David Schutt congratulated all the participants and said

this will help us build a well groomed students having

inclination towards science and technology.

The Jet toy training was conducted on first day and Skimmer

training was conducted on the next day. The master trainer

for Jet-toy was Mr. Manoj Girhe from John Deere & Mr.

Aatmesh Jain from ARAI. Master Trainer for Skimmer was Mr.

Rahul Gujar and Mr. Shrikanth Sampath from Eaton.

Teams were asked to build new sail patterns other than

conventional designs. Each team tested their Jet-toy and

Skimmer on corresponding tracks for Distance, Weight

carrying capacity, Speed, Accuracy, Maximum time & Turning

ability.

We have scheduled the AWIM Pune Olympics 2016 in the

month of December 2016.

TECH TALK:

The Tech Talk Series Lecture on “Efficient Physio-

Chemical Simulation of Fuels, Combustion and

Emissions in IC Engines” was organized on 3rd August

2016 at ARAI, Pune. The speaker for the lecture was

Dr. Amit Bhave, Chief Executive Officer, CMCL

Innovations. It witnessed participation from

engineers, scholars, students, faculty in the discipline

of engineering. Dr. K. C. Vora welcomed all the

participants, and Introduced Dr. Amit Bhave.

Dr. Amit Bhave is the CEO and co-founder of CMCL

Innovations, an R&D-driven, award-winning company

offering computer-aided engineering (CAE) software

products and technical consulting to the powertrain,

materials, and energy industries. CMCL Innovations

offers three commercial software toolkits and is

currently actively partnering within six large

collaborative development programmes in the UK

and Europe, focusing on the development of toolkits

for various applications such as hybrid vehicles, high

power density IC engines, and nanoparticles (both

organic and inorganic) from practical combustion

devices such as engines and reactors.

He has also led four techno-economic assessment

programmes in the areas of biomass-based power

generation, renewables, CO2 capture and utilisation.

He is also a Senior Member at Hughes Hall and has

over 35 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of

CAE, low-emission energy conversion, low carbon

vehicles, alternative fuels and chemical processes.

SAE TREK:

Pad-Marg - SAEIWS Trek a one day program is a blend of

adventure and learning. This trek is an initiative of SAEINDIA

Western Section, for its members. Second trek in this

initiative is scheduled on Saturday 20th August 2016 from

Vetal Hill to Chaturshrungi Hill and return.

This program was at scenic trekking locations which will

provide great sense of adventure and bonding with nature

and providing some instructional learning. In our second

edition of program, participants collected plastic waste,

bottles on the hill and sent it for recycling. Participants also

went under test on General Automotive Engineering.

All participants gathered at Vetal hill Hanuman Temple, from

where all participants started trekking towards

Chaturshrungi Hill and then return back.

Vetal Hill is a prominent hill in the city limits of Pune, India.

The hill is the highest point within the city limits. There is a

temple of Vetala located on the top of the hill from which

the hill derives its name.

Participants also gave a test on General Automotive

LECTURE MEETING - EMISSION

REGULATION FOR I. C. ENGINE IN INDIA:

Lecture at Collegiate Club: Mr. Ramesh delivered a lecture on “Emission regulation for I. C. Engine in India” at N. K. Orchid College of Engineering and Technology, Solapur for its collegiate club members.

AWIM MASTER TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM:

AWIM (A World In Motion) Master Teachers &

Volunteers Training Program” was conducted

successfully 27th Aug 2016 at Valentine Circle School,

Solapur. There were around 30 participants including

Student Volunteers and Teachers for this training.

The Jet toy and Skimmer training was conducted in

one day. The master trainer for this activity was Mr.

Sagar Murugkar of SAEIWS.

Teams were asked to build difference Jet toys and

new sail patterns for Skimmer other than

conventional designs. Each team tested their Jet-toy

and Skimmer based on specified parameters.

Teachers & Volunteers would train the students in

respective schools in coming months for the AWIM

Regional Olympics in December 2016.

LECTURE MEETING - PEGASOR’S TECHNOLOGY

OVERVIEW:

On 31st August 2016 SAEIWS conducted a lecture on

“Importance Of Measuring Particulate Emission Pm & Pn

From Engines – Pegasor’s Technology Overview” by Mr.

Markku Rajala, Head of Technology, Pegasor OY Finland at

SAEIWS and more than 60 participants attended the

program.

WORKSHOP - FUTURE POWERTRAIN:

One Day Workshop on Future Powertrain, Role of Vehicle

Thermal Management & Waste Heat Recovery Technology

was jointly organized by SAEINDIA WS with ARAI on 9th

September 2016.

The Speaker was Mr. Sudhi Uppuluri, Principal Investigator,

CSEG. There were over 36 participants witnessed the event.

COLLEGIATE CLUB INAUGURATION:

On 27th September 2016 new Collegiate Club was

Inauguration program was at Viva institute of

Technology, Virar. Mr. Ramesh Pasarija, DD SAEIWS

briefed about SAEINDIA activities and its benefits to

the participants. This was followed by lecture

“Emission Regulation In India” for its collegiate club

members. After the lecture Mr. Pasarija interacted

with student members. Later they visited the

workshop to see the BAJA vehicle of student team.
