And now I will shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia” (Daniel 11:1-2). The book of Daniel is not a prophecy about the United States, Russia, China, Japan, or any other 21st century nation. None of these nations, or any other 21st century super power, is mentioned in this book. However, there are four nations who continuously appear throughout the book. They are the Babylonians, also known as the Chaldeans (Daniel 1:4, 2:2, 2:10, 3:8, 4:7, 4:30, 5:7, 5:11, and 9:1). Next we have the Mede and Persian rule, a dual rule of two kingdoms, (the Mede kings, Daniel 5:28, 6:8, 6:12, 6:15, 8:20, 9:1, and 11:1), and, (the Persian kings, Daniel 8:20, 10:13, 10:20, and 11:2). Thirdly; we read of the Greecians (Daniel 8:1, 10:20, and 11:2). The fourth kingdom is never mentioned by name, but is implied in several texts, (Daniel 2:40, 7:3, 7:7, 7:17, 7:19, and 7:23). Both secular history and Biblical history reveal the identity of the fourth kingdom as Rome. It would be in the days of this fourth kingdom, Rome, which the God of heaven would set up His eternal kingdom, the church. Daniel writes, “And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron …” (Daniel 2:40), and, “And in the days of these kings, (the kings of the fourth kingdom, Rome –LY), shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but is hall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever” (Daniel 2:44). The entire book is about the four physical kingdoms who took physical Israel into captivity, and ruled over her, and the eternal kingdom, (spiritual Israel – the church), which God would set up in the days of the fourth kingdom, Rome. Thus, the term “… latter (or last) days …” is a reference to the last days of physical Israel as God’s appointed people, and not to the end of the world, “Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days” (Daniel 10:14). Daniel’s people, or “… thy people …” are the Jews, and “… the latter days …” are a reference to the last days of that nation as God’s appointed people. The four beasts of Daniel chapter seven, “The first was like a lion …” (v4), “And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear …” (v5), “After this I beheld, and lo another like a leopard …” (v6), “… and behold a fourth beast … and it had ten horns …” (v7); are the same four beasts of John’s Revelation chapter 13, but in reverse order, “And I … saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns …” (13:1), “And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard …” (13:2), “… and his feet were as the feet of a bear …” (13:2), “… and his mouth as the mouth of a lion …” (13:2). Since Daniel saw the beast about 400 to 500 years beforehand, he was told, “… shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days” (Daniel 8:26, also see and read 12:9). Since the Jewish nation and the church were about to live the prophecy of these two books, John was told, “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass …” (1:1), and, “… for the time is at hand” (1:3), and, “And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book, for the time is at hand” (Revelation 22:10).
