The Suzhou River is the mother river of Shanghai. It is not only the mirror of the development (发展) of Shanghai but also the successful example in dealing with the pollution (污染) by Shanghai Government. Now the Suzhou River is clean. In the river, there are many fish now. Beside the river there is a beautiful park memorizing (纪念) the history of the Suzhou River. There are many tall buildings on both sides of the river. You can feel the fresh air and the sweet smelling grass there. Every year the dragon boat race is held on the Suzhou River. The Suzhou River has changed a lot. In the past, the Suzhou River was dirty and smelly. It was terribly polluted. It was reported that there was no fish in it. There was no bird there. Many small boats were on the river. Alongside the river, there were many factories giving out wastes which polluted the river. On both sides of the river, there were lots of poor people and old houses.
