Student Leadership Team 2017-18.
Over the last few weeks a selection of students in Year 12 have been participating in student leadership
interviews, applying for the role of head boy and head girl. We are delighted to announce the
appointment of Ryan White as Head Boy and Natasha Hill as Head Girl. Both students have acted as
excellent role models and ambassadors throughout their time at Cox Green School and have some
brilliant ideas about how student leadership will evolve over the next year. Jamie Lodge and Elle Peters
will take up the roles of Deputy Head Boy and Girl, alongside student leaders Ieuan Thomas, Tyrese King,
Molly Horler and Megan Black. We were very impressed with the confidence and leadership ideas of all
these students and know that the Cox Green community will be impressed with how the team encourage
and support students in the lower years in becoming better participators and collaborators. Please look
out for further information on the work of the student leadership team in September. I would like to take
this opportunity to say how impressed we were with all the applicants and a massive well done from all
of us for participating in the process.

Lauren Roach claims top spot in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Second Round
at Port Royal Equestrian Centre—Saturday 8th July 2017
At the hotly contested Pony Premier Show at Port Royal Equestrian
Centre in Holme on Spalding Moor, York, seventy-three
competitors came forward to compete in the Blue Chip Pony
Newcomers Second Round and it was Lauren Roach who claimed
her place at the top of the leader board with three strong clear
rounds.
With two Horse of the Year Show tickets on offer for this October’s
Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship Final, the determination
of each competitor was obvious as the class began. After two
challenging rounds, twenty combinations remained to go head to
head against the clock in the final jump-off.
Lauren landed first place with Kerry Grimster’s 8 year-old bay
mare, Renkum Starlight. Showing their fine form in the first two
rounds, this combination took on the jump off with determination
to deliver a treble clear in 37.08 seconds.
What I achieved this weekend. By Lauren Roach
I jumped a Horse of the year show qualifier in Yorkshire on Renkum Starlight (the horse I ride for people)
and we went clear in the first and second round, and jumped the fastest clear round in the jump off. As
we won I will be going to the Horse of the Year show in October. I am proud of how me and Star
performed, we have worked extremely hard.

Student Leadership Conference at Sir William Borlase Grammar School
On Wednesday 5th July we had the opportunity to
attend a student led Leadership Conference at Sir
William Borlase Grammar School, where three
successful leaders shared their advice and guidance.
Our first talk was by Ray King, managing director of
Leadership Management UK Limited and coaches
corporate professionals on how to be an effective
leader. His key messages were to ‘crystallise’ your
thinking by making a dream list of what you want to
achieve, making sure you don’t hold back. He emphasised the importance of having an aim, planning for
it and having the self-confidence to go on and achieve it. Following this talk we were split into smaller
groups to take part in some workshop style activities. The first of which was entitled ‘leadership in action’
and teams were challenged to build the tallest free standing structure they could, using just newspaper
and tape. Then we had a presentation from student leaders of Princes Risborough School about how their
6th form student leadership team is structured. As Deputy Head boy and girl we intend to try and
implement some of their strong points into Cox Green’s Sixth form.
Our Second talk in the hall was held by Air Commodore Ian Duguid OBE who spoke about his experience
as a leader in the Royal Airforce’s Typhoon Force. He is in charge of 6000 personnel and 150 Typhoon
fighter jets worth £45 million each. Air Commodore Duguid highlighted to us the importance of being a
leader that motivates the team, encourages engagement and sets the bar high. He also discussed the
significance of effective communication, providing examples of outstanding leaders from history.
We had a fascinating talk on Mental Health, from the student leadership team at Dr Challoner’s Grammar
School. This brought to light some fundamental issues in society and how mental health is on the most
part ignored. We hope to see this become an issue that is highlighted more in our school next year so
watch this space!
The final talk was taken by Deborah Fielding, an award winning business woman who runs Mirus Media,
an agency that provide inspirational speakers for conferences and key note speakers to events. Her
clients include Simon Cowell and James Cordon. Her talk focused on the human side of leadership
emphasising the importance of recognising that every person you work with requires a personalised
approach. Her key motto was “believe in your brilliance”.
Overall it was an intriguing day in which we developed our understanding of leadership and how it differs
to management. We hope next year Cox Green will be able to run a session for the other schools to share
our ideas.

Work Experience—Jack Sharpling
Work Experience
I was struggling to find a work experience placement that suited me and what I wanted to do as a future
career. I arranged an appointment with Mrs McKay, and we looked at my CV made some amendments
and contacted local possible marketing companies I may be able to do work experience at. After a few
rejections I was asked by one company (Enigma marketing) to send in my CV and covering email, and
with this Mrs McKay suggested to stand out to send my media coursework film along with this, and it
worked, I was offered work experience at the company in a field/position that I wanted to be in and was
interested by.
The day I spent with them I did a lot and it massively exceeded my expectations. On arrival I was
introduced to the team and others that worked in the company in different roles, they suggested I wore
casual clothing and that suited the working environment I was going into.
After this initial meet and greet I went off and did a film shoot for an informational video for a data
company in Ealing. During this I set up and down equipment and did some work with the video and
sound, I was involved with something the whole day. I was there from around 10am until around 6pm.
On return from the shoot I got back to the office and sat and experienced some of the other sides to the
business such as the branding side.
This work experience increased my knowledge of the media and business type of company and the
environment and what goes into a marketing company, it has also helped me further understand the job
role and also develop my skills. I have since been offered more days in the company which I’m very
excited about.

With our New Year 13 students venturing into the work of world next week, some of them have already
taken up positions with pleasing outcomes, and have kindly written about their time with the companies.
Good luck to those who have them planned next week or over the coming weeks, we can’t wait to hear
all about it! If you would like you can send in any pictures and articles from your work experience
placement next week and during the summer, please sent them in to [email protected].

Work Experience—Jennifer Knight
Last week, for my work experience, I had the opportunity to spend five days at Lonza, a global
pharmaceutical and biotech company.
I spent my week at their Slough site, which specialises in the pharmaceutical industry. The first day was
an induction to the business, involving a variety of presentations throughout the day with others who
were joining the company as employees. This gave me a chance to experience what it could be like when
I start a job in my chosen field. I was also paired-up with a year 12 with similar interests from Burnham
Grammar School, who I spent my whole week with and luckily, we got on really well!
For the rest of the week I visited different departments, gaining a small insight into each one. I didn’t
realise until then just how complicated the whole process of drug development is and how many people
and departments are involved - some that you wouldn’t even think of! It was amazing to be able to work
my way through the different departments and see how it all leads to a potentially lifesaving drug with
years of work and billions of pounds invested into it. I also got the chance to experience what it is like to
work in the labs with state-of-the-art, very expensive equipment, some of it which I was lucky enough to
try out.
I am very grateful to Lonza for allowing me to do my week’s work experience with them; as well as being
a company full of lovely, helpful people who I enjoyed spending my time with, it gave me a real insight
into the pharmaceutical industry. I could now genuinely see myself entering the industry after university
and owe that to Lonza for giving me a completely immersive experience.
