Mustangs, the wild horses of North America, roam wild in many places of the arid West including our backyard of the Owyhee Mountains. Join us at Murphy Outpost Days to learn about Mustangs, meet formerly wild ones up close, talk with Mustang trainers, and hear a presentation about the history of Mustangs in the United States. Come view these magnificent creatures and see for yourself a living part of our American Heritage.

The sport of Cowboy Fast Draw is a timed sport using

western style six guns and holsters based on the

romance and legend of the Old West. The motto of

Cowboy Fast Draw is Safety First, Fun Second and

Competition Third.

The Treasure Valley Gunslingers is a non-political,

member owned organization whose goals include

educating as many people as possible in the safe and

proper use of firearms, to never lose sight that all

competitors are choosing to spend their time with us

to have fun, to keep the rules simple and to the point,

and to pursue the proper balance between spirit of the

game, fair play and meaningful competition.

Members dress in 1800s period style clothing and select an alias by which they are known in the sport.

Choosing an alias and determining what clothing you will wear is all part of the fun.

TVGS is home to multiple World and National Champions in the sport of Cowboy Fast Draw. The club

has both winter and summer ranges and each year since 2009, TVGS has hosted the Great Northwest

Territorial Championship of Cowboy Fast Draw over Memorial Day Weekend which attracts shooters from

around the country.

Bill McKeeth and his band “Country Roads” have a long

musical history. Bill, whose family roots are deep in Owyhee

county, has been playing since he was a teenager. He is a

charismatic vocalist whose guitar echoes the original

arrangements of the Old Country and Classics that he plays and

sings so masterfully. Along with the music is his running

commentary on life and music which is funny, gentle, and

insightful in the vein of Garrison Keillor.

Carolyn Johnson, who has accompanied Bill on bass for

seven years is also a lifelong musician. We play a host of

venues including coffee shops, cafes, senior living

establishments, and senior centers along with occasional out of town

engagements.

The West in the 1880s in a town where everyone was

armed and respect was expected and given, Rules

were simple and life was charmed.

If you knew everyone was packn’ and might shoot

straighter or faster than you,

You’d likely be more understanding and a might

friendlier, too.

You’d consider your hog leg always loaded and only

clear leather when prepared to go to work,

You’d be honest and hard working, thoughtful,

trustworthy and true,

Kind courteous and careful and your work would be

stronger than glue.

This is the part of history we’re promoting:

Gun safety and the right to pack a gun,

To relive this time as close as we can,

Meet new friends and have some fun

We do this for each other

We do it every day.

We do it for America

And we do it the “Cowboy Way”

We are a history group that does mostly living history with a few re-

enactments mixed in. Many of us have been doing living history and

doing reenactments for more than 15 years and some as few as 1 year, but

each of us have had a passion for history from a young age. We do a

mixture of impressions from both the Frontier Era and Civil War.

Murphy Outpost days for instance is a living history Frontier event for us,

where we dress up in

impressions of the soldiers that

were located in Owyhee

County along with some

civilians. There are more than the 3 of us that many of you have

seen, and we hope to bring more into the Murphy Outpost days

event this year. We are a great group of history lovers who happen

to have a common interest and passion in Frontier and Civil War

history. Please check us out this year, we are happy to try to answer

any questions as best we can, as we draw on knowledge from

historical documents, history books, and documentaries we lovingly

study. We plan to have some very interesting displays for you this

year including a partial display of a garrison camp and a Mountain

Howitzer. We appreciate the privilege we have of getting to display

our possessions we so cherish from a part of history we are

fascinated with, and to get to share what we know of it.

Wagon Masters, Cal & Marla Clevenger, have a treat in store for the youngsters at Outpost Days, leading them in the creation of a personalized cedar wood sign. The kids will brand and hand drill the wood, finishing up with a hanging sign to take home with them.

The Clevengers attended Outpost Days 28 years ago, and the following year started taking their Pioneering Adventure to the schools, where students participate in 12 activities, giving them a better understanding of pioneer life and the hardships our ancestors endured.

The purpose of the ISRDA is to encourage and promote

square and round dancing by the means of sponsoring valley

wide dance festivals, promote good will and fellowship among

clubs, promote public awareness and to promote activities

that will train and develop callers and cuers. The ISRDA

sponsors four dances a year: Yearling Round-Up, Funstitute, Round Dance

Festival, and Fall Jubilee.

My wife and I started dancing in 1984, just for exercise. We did not

intend on wearing those funny clothes and dancing anywhere but at home club. What we found was a

community of people that wanted nothing from us, but for us to enjoy this lifetime sport—we have danced

with people from 8 to 92 years old. I started calling in 1990, and found that piece of life that was missing. I

have called in 14 states in the USA, Puerto Rico, Germany, Australia, and Austria. Square dancing is said to be

“Friendship set to music”. My idea of dancing is to have as much fun as we possibly can. This is supposed to

be fun! We have lived in Idaho for the past 37 years, and square dancing has filled this time with music, good

food, happy memories, and great friends all over the world!

I was born in Oklahoma and raised in Kellogg Idaho. I am married

and have four children, five grandchildren and two great

grandchildren. I live in Emmett Idaho with my husband (Gary),

have been here for about 25 years.

I started singing in the bars when I was 17 in Kellogg Idaho.

My brother (David) and I had a little band and we played all around

that area. Then ,when I got older, I called on the Lord to be my

Savior and started singing on the praise team. I have been playing

assisted living and memory care units for the last 15 years. I've

done the farmers markets, harvest days, cherry festival, some

rodeo's, and Huntington ore for the Pioneer days.

This will be my first time in Murphy, and I am looking forward

to seeing your town and singing for you. Gonna be a lot of fun I am

sure. Thank you having me there to celebrate with you all.

An Informal, non-political blend of geology and geographical descriptions, this presentation reflects on the history o the Indians, mountain men, miners, loggers, ranchers, sheepmen, farmers, settlers, politicians, and courageous women that made Idaho and the American West.

A mix of personal stories, local and regional color, anecdotal tales, stories and commentaries of the “oldster’s times”. As he shares the sometimes funny and little known quirks of Idaho history he tells the audience, “Only in Idaho . . . You can’t make that up.”

Anyone who doesn’t know Charlene Nettleton, hasn’t been around

Murphy much. She is the wife of retired, long time Sheriff of Owyhee

County, Tim Nettleton and Charlene have lived here for forty-eight years.

Twenty-eight of those years she worked at the Owyhee County

Courthouse.

She started quilting when she retired eighteen

years ago. Crocheting and knitting are also some

of her talents. She has donated several quilts and

afghans to the Melba Community Auction and to

the Owyhee County Historical Society for fund

raising.

Thank you Charlene for all that you do.
