Vol 41 18771924 By the death of William WHITLOCK, Esq., at St. Andrews

(Charlotte Co.) on 3rd inst., one of the links that connects thepresent with the early history of the province is broken. Mr. W. wasdescended from a good old loyalist family. His grandfather, Capt.Thomas WHITLOCK came with the loyalists from Pennsylvania and settledin St. John. He, with General COFFIN, gave the lot of land upon whichthe first church was erected. In the female line he is descended fromLt. Hallet who during the Revolutionary war, held a commission in theRoyal Navy and was owner of a farm on Long Island near New York, nearthe celebrated Hurl gate, and known to this day as Hallet's Point. Hisfather, William WHITLOCK, built and owned one of the first two storyframe buildings erected in St. John and was situated on Water St. nearthe South wharf, which he occupied as a dwelling and store, where hecarried on for years a general business. In 1812, Mrs. WHITLOCK, withher children, moved to St. Andrews, where her eldest daughter thenlived, being married to the late Hon. Harris HATCH. She opened a storein which her son William was her clerk and right hand man. He sometimes went to St. John to purchase stock. During the year 1822,William commenced business on his own account in a store situated onWater St., St. Andrews upon the site now occupied by the Morrison'sHotel. After a few years he retired, to accept the position of managerof Messrs. Allenshaw and McMaster's lumber business at St. George, where he made hosts of friends. Resigning that position he returned toSt. Andrews and recommenced business on his own account in a store upon

the Market wharf, from which he afterwards removed to the store in thehouse owned and occupied by his mother in the Church Block on WaterSt., and in which he successfully carried on a general grocery andhardware business up to the hour of his death. The house has been inthe possession of the Whitlock family for over fifty years. Inaddition to his store business he engaged to a considerable extent inshipping, at various times owning shares in, or the whole of, vessels, some of which he got built. He held the agencies for several fireinsurance firms, was agent for steamer "Belle Brown", Lloyd'sConfederation and secretary for the St. Andrews Steamboat Wharf Co.Previous to Confederation he was for some time Commissioner of buoysand beacons. He took a leading part in the promotion of the companyformed for building the St. Andrews & Quebec Railway and was directorof the company. He held the commission of Peace for twenty years. Hewas a loyal adherent to the Church of England. He was for years avestryman of All Saints Church. While sitting in his office, talkingwith an old acquaintance from St. John, he passed away without amurmer. Of the four brothers and three sisters, one of each (theyoungest) only are left. Samuel H. WHITLOCK, now residing in St.Andrews and Emma WATSON wlo Robert WATSON, Esq., St. Stephen. WmWhitlock was unmarried.

177 We resume today the brief sketch of Robert WATSON, Esq. asintroduced in the "Bay Pilot" on 18th ult. -- His fatherts name wasRobert Watson who emigrated from Scotland to St. Stephen about the year1780. The present Robert Watson was the youngest son and St. Stephenis his birthplace. His father died in 1817 and the following year, young Robert left his native town and went to St. John, where he becameinitiated with the mercantile life in the counting house of the lateThomas MILLIDGE, Esq. After a term of years in 1826, he returned toSt. Stephen; and soon received the appointment of Deputy Treasurer inthe Customs Dept.; and subsequently appointed Collector of Customs inhis native town. For nearly 32 years, Mr. Watson performed the dutiesof his office, and having a love for agricultural pursuits as well, hegave considerable attention to farming. Neither money nor pains werespared to make the soil productive and the large farm on the Old RidgeRoad, a short distance from the town yet bears ample proof of Mr.Watson's liberality and industry as a scientific ariculturalist. Inthe year 1858 a change came in the official life of Mr. Watson, occasioned by the death of David UPTON, Esq. who was Cashier of the St.Stephen's Bank, and on looking around for a fitting successor, the lotfell on Mr. Watson. The St. Stephen Railway felt the energetic aid ofRobert Watson in its first and every stage; and in the year of itsopening, 1865, he opened as a Hotel known as the Watson House. Thefire of the 14th day of May 1877 reduced this beautiful mansion toashes. We find a short biographical sketch in the "CanadianIllustrated News" of November 3rd, 1877, but as there are two errors init, we take this opportunity to correct them. It is true that Mr.Watson was twice married; but his first wife was the daughter of Rev.Dr. Skeffington THOMSON, not Rev. D.G. THOMSON. Again his second andpresent wife was the daughter of William WHITLOCK, Esq. of St. Andrews, the father of the late William WHITLOCK and present Hallet WHITLOCK,Esq. and not a "Miss McCullough" as erroneously stated. Capt. ThomasSMITH, another St. Stephen favorite is the son-in-law of Mr. Watsonhaving married a daughter by the present lady. The first Mrs. Watsonhad two daughters, both died, and also two daughters by his presentwife. (abridged)
