He was inspired to write children’s books, when his mother sang him lullabies that rhymed to make him fall to sleep. In his child hood he often got picked on because his mother and father were German immigrants. During the First World War they lost a lot of money but worked hard to get it back.

Theodor Seuss Geisel, more commonly known as Dr Seuss, was born on the 4th of March 1904.

He went to Oxford University in England, but he didn’t like it so he dropped out and toured Europe. One good thing happened there though, he met his wife.

He started drawing cartoons and in world war two he made an animated film. From there, he drew cartoons for a book company, leading to his own first book called And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street. Once he wrote The Cat in the Hat he became famous. After that he wrote 60 more children’s literacy books. His favourite book was The Butter Battle.

Now his books are so famous they’re being turned into movies. Dr Seuss received many awards for is writing, including 2 Academy awards, 2 Emmy awards and a Peabody award. Dr Seuss died in 1991 he was 87 years old after a life of joy writing about things he loved.
