We will be looking at the first churches reported in the Bible in the Book of Acts. I think that each church has a distinctive quality that can guide us as a church. For example, last Sunday we looked at the church of Jerusalem. Their distinctive quality was that they were devoted. Acts 2:42 provides us a summary: “They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, and to the breaking of bread and the prayers”. What would be the result if we were all deeply devoted disciples of Jesus Christ? What if all of us were devoted to being the best Christians we could be? I think that our church, our community and our world would feel the impact. Each week as we examine the churches from the Book of Acts we will discover other distinctive qualities that we as a church can emulate. Due to vacation time and inviting other people to preach and lead worship these sermons will not be preached consecutively . However, by the end of the summer we will have been able to learn lessons from these earliest churches on how to be the church today. The schedule of these sermons are as follows: May 22 “Be Devoted” - The Church of Jerusalem May 29 “Be Mission-Minded” - The Church of Antioch June 12 “Be Free” - The Churches of Galatia June 26 “Be Generous” - The Churches of Macedonia July 17 “Be Faithful” - The Churches of Thessalonica July 24 “Be Unified” - The Church of Corinth August 7 “Be Alert” - The Church of Ephesus August 14 ”Be Bold” - The Church of Rome Yours in Christ, Chris Camps Scholarship Funding Would you like to provide a great experience for a child or a youth from our church this summer? If so, then would you consider donating to our Camp Scholarship Fund? For many years our church has underwritten the cost of our camping program by giving scholarship equal to 1/2 the cost of camp for every camper from our church and if needed we would give full scholarships. This en- abled us to make sure that no one would be kept from going to camp because of the cost. Until this year we have always handled this out of our General Fund. But when we were trying to balance the budget for this year we were faced with some tough decisions. One of them was that we could not continue to fund camp scholarships at the level we wanted to. So we decided to cut the scholarships to 1/3 the cost of camp and to make an appeal to our members for donations to our Camp Scholarship Fund. This year for our Bartlesville District Youth Camp we have 42 of our youth signed up to go. The cost of camp is $220 and we are providing scholarships of $75 each. We have enough in our budget for 20 scholarships ($1500). When we figure out the amount needed including a few full scholarships we are needing about $2,000 in donations for our youth camp scholarships. This year for children’s camps we have 27 children signed up to go. The cost of camp varies from $50 to $225 depending upon the length of the camp. We are providing scholarship of 1/3 the cost. We budgeted $1000 and so far we have almost $1300 needed for scholarships. So we need about $300 more in donations to cover our scholarships. If you would like to donate towards the Camp Scholarship just note that on your check. Thank you for provid- ing these important experiences.

A Note From Our Pastor

My new sermon series started this last Sunday. We will be looking at the first churches reported in the Bible in

the Book of Acts. I think that each church has a distinctive quality that can guide us as a church. For example, last

Sunday we looked at the church of Jerusalem. Their distinctive quality was that they were devoted. Acts 2:42 provides

us a summary: “They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, and to the breaking of bread and the

prayers”. What would be the result if we were all deeply devoted disciples of Jesus Christ? What if all of us were

devoted to being the best Christians we could be? I think that our church, our community and our world would feel the

impact.

Each week as we examine the churches from the Book of Acts we will discover other distinctive qualities that

we as a church can emulate. Due to vacation time and inviting other people to preach and lead worship these sermons

will not be preached consecutively . However, by the end of the summer we will have been able to learn lessons from

these earliest churches on how to be the church today. The schedule of these sermons are as follows:

May 22 “Be Devoted” - The Church of Jerusalem

May 29 “Be Mission-Minded” - The Church of Antioch

June 12 “Be Free” - The Churches of Galatia

June 26 “Be Generous” - The Churches of Macedonia

July 17 “Be Faithful” - The Churches of Thessalonica

July 24 “Be Unified” - The Church of Corinth

August 7 “Be Alert” - The Church of Ephesus

August 14 ”Be Bold” - The Church of Rome

Yours in Christ,

Chris

Camps Scholarship Funding Would you like to provide a great experience for a child or a youth from our church this summer? If so, then

would you consider donating to our Camp Scholarship Fund?

For many years our church has underwritten the cost of our camping program by giving scholarship equal to

1/2 the cost of camp for every camper from our church and if needed we would give full scholarships. This en-

abled us to make sure that no one would be kept from going to camp because of the cost.

Until this year we have always handled this out of our General Fund. But when we were trying to balance the

budget for this year we were faced with some tough decisions. One of them was that we could not continue to

fund camp scholarships at the level we wanted to. So we decided to cut the scholarships to 1/3 the cost of

camp and to make an appeal to our members for donations to our Camp Scholarship Fund.

This year for our Bartlesville District Youth Camp we have 42 of our youth signed up to go. The cost of camp is

$220 and we are providing scholarships of $75 each. We have enough in our budget for 20 scholarships

($1500). When we figure out the amount needed including a few full scholarships we are needing about

$2,000 in donations for our youth camp scholarships.

This year for children’s camps we have 27 children signed up to go. The cost of camp varies from $50 to $225

depending upon the length of the camp. We are providing scholarship of 1/3 the cost. We budgeted $1000

Give Thanks With A Grateful Heart Each of you hold a very special place in my heart! You have touched my life through your abundant love and caring. Thank you for the many prayers, cards, and calls. God has heard and has answered! It is truly wonderful to be able to speak with normal effort; a time of rejoicing! May you know abundant love, peace, and joy ~ Goldie I wanted to thank everyone for the prayers, phone calls, and words of comfort in the loss of my mother. I appreci-ate the church family so much during this time ~ Dean Broyles

Our family could hardly believe all the visits, cards, phone calls and meals that our splendid church family provided when Keith passed away suddenly on April 20th. Our pastors were there for us with spiritual support and guid-ance that we needed so desperately. What an amazing group of loving, caring and compassionate people in our church home. Thank you for all that you did for us in our time of need. With our love ~ Betty Callicott and the whole family

College Ministry Fellowship The College Ministry Fellowship (18-24) will be meeting on Thursday, May 26th at 6:30 p.m. in the Lodge. We’ll be having some snacks, talking about what we’d like to see happen for

this group, and enjoying time together. If you’re interested in this or future events, we hope

that you’ll join us on Thursday night and join our group on Facebook (FUMC Owasso Young Adults) Questions? Contact Andy Henson ([email protected]) or Carol

Cooper ([email protected])

Young Adult Fellowship The Young Adult Fellowship Group (25-39) is up and going! Our next meeting time is scheduled for Sunday, June 12th at 7:00 pm in the Lodge - we will come and enjoy the church picnic for a while then head inside to meet. We gather for fellowship and to share in joys/concerns/devotional time together. If you’re interested in this or future events, please contact Andy Henson at 918-272-5731 or [email protected] so that you can be added to the contact list. We would love to have you come and join us!

VIM Fundraising and Upcoming Trips Thanks to everyone who was able to attend the VIM meeting on May 15. We had a successful

meeting and are excited about being able to bring this area of ministry into our church and into

what we are already doing missionally.

There are 4 people from our church (Connie Mix, Andy Henson, Lacey Moore, and CJ Harris)

participating in a mission to Nicaragua from August 1 to August 8. We also have 2 people (Chris

Noland and Aaron Plew) who are signed up to participate in the Bartlesville District Mission trip

to Bolivia from July 28-August 6. This is merely the start of something greater to come.

We want to be able to have an opportunity to support those going in missions this summer so

on Sunday, June 26th from 5:00-7:00 pm we will have a dinner in the Chapel to support the

Nicaraguan and Bolivian missions. You will have an opportunity to learn more about the missions

to Nicaragua and Bolivia and what each experience will entail. There is no charge to come but we

will be taking an offering during the meal in support of these missions. We hope you’ll join us

then.

We want to take a moment to inform you of upcoming opportunities to go and be in mission.

October 3-8 – DISTRICT VIM TO NUEVA ESPERANZA, NEW MEXICO. The cost will be about $350,

and they will drive in vans. If you’re interested, contact Andy Henson

([email protected]) and he can put you in touch with someone to get more information

November 5-12 - Possible VIM to somewhere in the US. Keep these dates open if you’re

interested in participating in a VIM experience through our church.

Again, this is simply the beginning of many opportunities to go and serve through VIM. We hope

you’ll continue to support those in mission and this new area of ministry in our church!

A “Thank You” from the Christian Service Scholarship Committee The Christian Service Scholarship Committee would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who supported our Silent Auction Theme Basket Fundraiser. The basket donations were exciting and unique making our efforts a great success. Those generously bidding on bas-kets surpassed our dreams, coming up with $3,041. Thank you to all who helped in our success. It is a joy to share the proceeds with those studying to further their Christian education. So far this year we were able to grant scholarships to Rebecca Yount, John Miller, and Connie Mix. This summer and fall we are anticipating that Carol Cooper, Taud Boatman, and Andy Henson will be enrolled in classes. We are proud of you!

You are invited… The Family Life Committee is inviting YOU to the First United Methodist of Owasso church picnic on June 12, 2011 at 6:00 PM. We will have Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, all the fixin’s, drinks, games, and fellowship. Please don't be left out! Bring your appetites, lawn chairs, and blankets and be prepared for a lot of fun! For more information, contact Monica Miller or Cathey Foshee

More thanks from the Week of Serving I want to thank all of those people who gave up their time and helped do my yard and hauling off trash and junk. My daughter came home one day and told me that I might be chosen to receive some help with minor chores that I am unable to do. Of course I was grateful for any help but had no idea of how many people would be involved or anything. I met Jerry Spencer who came out to speak to me. When he told me someone would come out and look at what I thought would be a couple hours of labor and I pay for supplies. This task ended up being a large major job. It still didn’t stop him. He gave up many days to see that it was complete. Once I looked out and there were maybe 10 people doing yard work, hauling, and roof work. The girl mowing looked no older than 12. Even though I don’t know all of those people who were a part of the help - I want to express to every person how much I will never forget that day and what it meant to me. Since being sick I have been blessed to know that there really are people willing to lend a hand. Very very special thanks to Jerry. He went above and beyond what I could even imagine. I hope if he is ever in need that he will be overflowed with blessings like he did for me. I have not spoke to Taud but I sure would like to thank him as well for sharing his people who cared. Thanks again, Lorna Gibbs * We may never know the impact we have on others when we are willing to simply go and serve!

More Thank You’s

Commissioning Service, Concert and Reception Jim Cinocca is being commissioned as an elder in the United Methodist Church at our Oklahoma Annual Conference on Sunday, May 29 at 7:00 pm in Oklahoma City. This is, of course, a special event for Jim as he enters the ministry. He will be receiving his first appointment as a United Methodist pastor at the conclusion of Annual Conference. Congratulations Jim! Jim will be preaching at 3 worship services in the Worship Center on June 5th. That evening at 5:00 pm, his wife Holly is having a farewell concert with the help of our Praise Team and friends. Following the concert we will be having a reception for the Cinocca family. They will be starting their ministry in Heavener the next week.

Annual Conference May 29-June 1 The Annual Conference of the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church will meet

May 29-June 1 in Oklahoma City. Delegates for this Conference include: Chris Tiger and Taud

Boatman as clergy delegates and John Miller, Buffy Boatman and Carol Cooper as lay delegates.

Others who will be in attendance are: Jim Cinocca as a clergy delegate, Larry Adkisson as a retired

clergy and Andy Henson. A highlight on Sunday evening will be when Jim Cinocca is

commissioned as an elder in the United Methodist Church. On Wednesday afternoon when

appointments are made we are expecting both of our pastors to be reappointed to serve the Owasso

Church; Chris Tiger for his 14th year and Taud Boatman for his 7th year.

Special Speakers in June On June 5 Jim Cinocca will be preaching at 3 of our worship services. He will begin his ministry in

Heavener the next week. On June 19, Steve Bredesen will be preaching. Steve was with us a year

ago to tell us about his plans to go to Uganda as a missionary. Now he will be reporting on first year

of ministry in Uganda.

Prayerwalking The Prayer Team Ministry is planning a Prayerwalk. We want to pray for our community and we will start with the neighborhood around the church. Prayerwalking is simply praying with purpose as you walk. The object of Prayerwalking is to go to a specific location to offer up prayers for that area. It is an excellent exercise in listening for God’s voice as it requires all of your senses to be tuned in to God. The biblical roots behind prayerwalking are found in Luke 10 when Jesus appointed 72 of His followers to go out in pairs to prepare the way for Him to come. In a very real way, prayerwalking prepares the way for God’s message to come to an area through blessing. We will be praying for each home and the occupants of that home as we walk by. Our plan is that you can experience this style of praying and take it to your own neighborhoods. We will gather at the church on Saturday, June 4th at 10:00 am and discuss the concepts of prayerwalking. From around 10:30 am to 11:15 am we will do our prayerwalking and at 11:15 am we will meet back at the church and share our experiences. If you are interested in participating please indicate below. For more information contact Priscilla Tiger at [email protected] or 918-605-8196. so come a little earlier with your food items. You’ll be getting a call next week to see which of the picnic side

dishes, or dessert that you’d like to bring. If you want something other than water to drink, you need to bring

your own. We’ll have a big jug of water and a cooler full of ice. Important - please bring your lawn chairs.

Plan on entering our 1st Annual Horseshoe Tournament, there will be a very nice prize for the winning team (and

probably a booby prize for last place team). Or maybe you’d rather play Scrabble, Monopoly, Farkel, cards, or watch

the tournament & cheer on your favorite team, or just chat with each other. Which ever you choose, you will enjoy

good food (as usual), great fun and awesome fellowship! Hope to see everyone there!

On Thursday, June 23rd we will tour the Alpaca Ranch in Owasso. Jess & Cookie Bowers are the owners or 34

Camp Registration Deadline is approaching fast. All registrations need to be submitted to the church office by June 1st to avoid a late fee. Camper slots are filled on a first come, first serve basis, so be sure to get your forms filled out and into the church office as soon as possible. DO NOT register on-line or mail your information to the Conference Office. Our church will pay 1/3 of the cost for the campers, but we can’t do that until we get your registration paperwork and if money is sent to the Conference Office, we are not able to reimburse you. Camp Registration and Health forms are available in the Children’s Area, the Church office and on-line. If you have any questions, please contact Corrina Robinson at 272-5731 or via e-mail at [email protected]

Our Noah’s Ark Preschool Sunday School Room (younger preschoolers - Room 107 across from the Nursery) is in need of a new Leader. Pam Weibel has served as the Noah’s Ark Room Leader for the last few years now and has decided to move to a different area of Children’s Ministry to serve. We are so thankful to Pam for her service heart and loving guidance over the years and I am excited to have her serve in a different capacity with our children. This change brings on a new opportunity for another loving, servant heart to lead our younger preschool kids along the beginning of their spiritual journey as they discover the various ways God reaches out to each one of us every day. The curriculum is very user friendly. It features a bible story, music CD, craft, games and video component. Please prayerfully consider serving in this area of Children’s Ministry. Contact Corrina Robinson at the church office for more details.

Vacation Bible School is right around the corner. This year Shake It Up Café will open for 1 week only starting June 27th - July 1st from 9am - noon to train Chefs. There will be an evening event open to the public on Thursday, June 30th where our Chefs will demonstrate their knowledge of selected recipes from God. This event will start at 6pm with the demonstration and then conclude with a tour of Shake It Up Café. Chefs entering Kindergarten - 6th Grade during the 2011-12 School Year will be admitted to this 1 week training opportunity. Youth Force 2011 Claremore, OK We are getting all geared up for Youth Force in Claremore this summer. We have 41 youth and 9 adults who will be spending the week of June 5-10 in Claremore. We’ll be working on homes of people who can’t do the work themselves...we’ll be building wheel chair ramps, painting, siding, roofing and more. Please be in prayer for us as we experience Youth Force again this summer. Below is a list of all our youth and adults going—it’s always fun to get mail while at Youth Force, so if you feel like sending some letters, please do so! And, please do be praying for all of us. Your prayers sustain us when we’re tired from working or missing our friends and families. Even if you’re not attending Youth Force, there is a way for you to be involved. Our church will be providing the meal on Monday night, June 6th. We’ll be doing a Mexican Feast. If you can provide monetary donations to help cover the expenses of this meal or if you can provide a dessert, please let Carol Cooper know. There will be a bul-letin insert to sign up also. Or you can email Carol at [email protected]. Thanks for your help!

Advice to our High School Graduates From the 11:11 Worship Service

*As you go and create your own life, remember you will always have a loving church family here in Owasso. * Don’t eat the Oreo. Go without dessert or buy a pack of Oreo's from the store. Don’t’ get a class at 6:00 in the morning. You will have to get up very early. Bring lots of blankets. Your room will be cool. Visit your friends and family. Not just on the holidays. This is all I can give, since I haven’t been to college. So good luck. * Do good! Awesome! Super! 100%! * I Timothy 4:12 (NLT) Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you life, in your love, your faith, and your purity. * Don’t forget who you are, don’t forget how you got to where you are and remember whose you are! * Everyday—look for God’s presence and blessings. * To all the Grads—or A.T.G.’s Don’t eat the Oreo. Go without dessert. Make sure you don't let anybody or anything change what YOU want to do. Come and visit your family, including your church family as often as you can, not just the holidays. I can’t give much more advice, since I haven’t gone to college yet. Have fun while you’re there and keep us in touch. Good luck, wherever you are, in college. * To Seniors—Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is God’s will—his good, pleasing and perfect will. My prayer to you… Even though you’re independent, continue to be in church on Sunday. Even though you stayed out late on Saturday, continue to be in church on Sunday. Remember how close you feel to Jesus right now, and continue to be in church on Sunday. * Seniors, Don’t forget who you are and where you came from. Don’t conform to the pressures of college/world. Hold tight to what you believe! And thank those who have helped you get this far! Study hard and enjoy every second of it!! 4 years goes by quick!!! Congrats Class of 2011 * Check in with God daily, not just for that BIG EXAM and check in with your Mom or Dad at least once a week! * Choose friends who want to make you a better person and help you be a better Christian. God gave the best “advice” as possi-ble, re-act and re-react the 10 commandments. Live by them and you will know peace. * If you are going away to school make and extra set (or two) of car keys. Nothing is worse than being locked out of your car in the cold night & know that the only people who have a copy are more than 2 hours away! Keep an extra set in your wallet and a set with someone trust worthy on campus. Use the school commissary, they have healthier food than you’d buy on your own—helps with the freshman 10! Talk pleasantly to your grandparents and parents each time you get a chance, one day they are just gone. * Be responsible. Follow your dreams. Show up. Live for God—let him guide you. * Love is the key to life! Trust me. Love is the key to life! Love your family, friends and strangers. Do not hold grudges! Forgive. Be positive. Things will work out. If you love, God will take care of you. I know from experience, love yourself. Your body is the temple of the Lord. Take care of yourself. Eat right and be careful who you give your body too. Most of all Love God...with all your heart, soul and mind. God Bless you!!

Prayer for Youth Force Many from our church family will be participating in Youth Force-Claremore June 5 through June 10. The Prayer Minis-

try would like to support those with our prayers during the week. We plan to set up the prayer room with pictures and

information about those involved and suggestions for how you can pray for them. We would like you to visit the Prayer

Room during the week and experience praying for our youth and this mission project. There will not have specific times

set up but just come as you can. The Prayer Ministry Team has made some changes to the Prayer Room so be sure to

come by and check it out.
