"Ovidius" University ofConstantza was set up by gov-ernmental decision, on the 7-thof March 1990. This youngUniversity however prides itselfon continuing fifty years of hign-er education in this scenic areaof Dobrudja.The University of Constantza,
settled on the Black Sea coast;ranks as one of the major institu-
tions of higher education inRomania and it has known spec-tacular development. It is com-plex educational institution, amodern university that hasestablished a national and inter-national reputation for itsachievements.It counts about 20,000 stu-
dents and consists of 15 facul-ties, 62 specializations, master
studies for 54 specializations,and 7 PHD programs.
The teaching staff membersmore than 1,315 specialists 100full professors, 250 associateprofessors, 440 lecturers, 360assistant professors and 150junior assistant professors, and15 researchers.The University is provided

with fully equipped buildings forlaboratories, classrooms, auti-doriums, multimedia rooms andother training rooms, covering100,000 square meters.It also owns a central library
with over one million books andperiodicals, 10 reading roomswith more than 500 seats in anarea of more than 10,000meters. The network of branch-es includes 4 faculty libraries.New computer networks havebeen established for the benefitof the students and academics.Other important facilities are
computing services, languagecenters and "Ovidius" UniversityPress, a publishing housewhich prints university treatiesand research work of teachigstaff. It also prints the "Annals ofConstantza University" contain-ing scientific papers in differentfields such as biology, physics,
chemistry, literature and linguis-tics, medical, economic sci-ences, mathematics, history,geography, informatics, theolo-gy, agriculture, engineering. The University has 5 student
hostels with more than 1,500places, restaurants, student’sclubs offering plenty of recre-ational and cultural facilities.At the University’s sports club,
located on the Mamaia Lake,students can use about 10hectares of sports fields for theirtraining: football and athleticsfields, volleyball, handball, bas-ketball, tennis courts, rooms forphysical fitness and rhythmicgymnastics, a swimming pool,saunas, body-building rooms, amodern and complex nauticalclub for rowing and yachting,etc.As partner in the Erasmus-

The capital of the historicalprovince of Dobrudja (an arealying between the Danube andthe Black Sea) and the secondlargest city of Romania,Constanta has a long history.
Greek sailors form Milet set-tled here in the 6th century B.C.calling the place Tomis.
The colony particularlythrived under the Roman rule,beginning with the 1st centuryB.C.
The vestiges of the AncientGreek, Roman and Byzantine civ-ilizations have been of particularinterest for Romanian and foreignhistorians and archeologists.
W ith a population of over350,000 inhabitants, Constanta islocated about 130 kilometersaway from the Danube Delta, and225 kilometers away fromBucharest. It has a six-hour directmaritime route to Istanbul (600km by road).
Constanta has temperate cli-mate with hot summers and coldwinters. The average annual tem-
perature is approximately 11o
Celsius.Constantas a long tradition
of multiethnic peaceful coexis-tence: its cosmopolitan and opencharacter make it suitable forinternational contacts andcooperation.

"Ovidius" University of Constantawas granted a charter by to theRomanian Government’s decision, onof March 7, 1990. This is one youngand modern University which howev-er has a long history and an experi-ence of about 50 years of high educa-tion in this beautiful area of our coun-try, Dobrogea.
Constanta University, settled onthe Black Sea coast, is one of themost important institutions of highereducation in our country and it hasknown spectacular post-revolutiondevelopment.
"Ovidius" University of Constantais a complex educational institution, amodern university that has estab-lished a national and international rep-utation for its achievements.
It counts about 20,000 studentsand consists of 15 faculties, 62 spe-cializations, master studies for 54specializations, and 7 PHD pro-grams.
There are also more than 700members on the teaching staff.
