Birthdays

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT—ROBERT KLINE

-by Everette E. Parker, DOM+ Resident

Robert Kline, a resident of the

Ohio Veterans Home, has

traveled all over the world’s

oceans.

A veteran of eight years in the

Merchant marines, Bob

enlisted right out of high

school starting as “a lowly

deck hand” but advancing to

navigator while serving on

literally dozens of merchant

vessels hauling arms and other

supplies to troops during

World War II. Bob received

his Commission in New York

directly from then Secretary of

the Navy, Forestall. He trav-

eled on every ocean in the

world, usually on armed ships,

but “never faced combat.”

Bob is proud of all his ships,

recalling some that were 1,000

feet long. He, like many oth-

ers in the Merchant Marines,

was not classed as a veteran

he visited on his ships.

“I came here to OVH only

because I was

becoming too

much of a bur-

den to my wife.

She is 87 and I

am 90,” he said.

Bob states, “I

am enjoying it

here (at OVH).

This is the next

best thing to

home. I am treated very good

here and everyone is good to

me.” Since coming to OVH,

Bob enjoys trips, bingo and

playing Wii games with other

residents. He also attends

Mass regularly.

Bob’s family is very suppor-

tive and visits him frequently,

helping him with his OVH

activities as much as possible.

until 1988. Now, he is a

proud member of the Ameri-

can Lehio, AMVETS and the

Knights of Colum-

bus in which he

served as Grand

Knight of Huron

County.

Born in the village

of New Washington,

his family moved to

Norwalk when he

was very young and

has called Norwalk home ever

since. At one time, after re-

turning to Norwalk, Non oper-

ated Isaly store and was very

popular with his customers.

Later, he worked for General

Motors.

Bob was married to his wife

of 65 years upon discharge in

1946. They have seven sons

and six daughters, almost as

widely scattered as the ports

From Boston to Baghdad, Tampa to Toronto, The United States Army Field Band has been thrilling

audiences of all ages for more than six decades. As the premier touring musical representative for

the United States Army, this internationally-acclaimed organization travels thousands of miles each

year presenting a variety of music to enthusiastic audiences throughout the nation and abroad.

Through these concerts, the Field Band fosters the support of the American people for members of

the armed forces and supports diplomatic efforts around the world.

The United States Army Field Band is considered by music critics to be one of the most versatile

and inspiring musical organizations in the world. Its members, selected by highly-competitive audi-

tion, represent some of the finest musical talent in America. More than six decades as the military's

most traveled musicians have earned them the title, "The Musical Ambassadors of the Army."

DIRECTOR OF INPATIENT SERVICES

Frank Swinehart’s job is to make

sure Veterans who live at the Ohio

Veterans Homes and are nearing

the end of life receive excellent

hospice care.

Frank is Director of Inpatient

Services for Stein Hospice, which

operates a hospice unit at the

Georgetown home and cares for

patients at the Sandusky home. As

the former administrator of OVH in

Sandusky, Frank is well aware of

the issues facing Veterans and their

families.

“The staff is familiar with me and

my values, and always foremost is

the needs of the Veteran patient,”

he said.

Some of those needs are changing

as the aging Vietnam Veterans

move into OVH and need hospice

care. Many of them are dealing

with Post-traumatic stress disorder

and other emotional difficulties.

Stein Hospice is prepared to meet

their needs, Frank said.

“We have staff trained

in Eye Movement

Desensitization, which

is an effective treatment

method for resolving

emotional difficulties,

and a team of

counselors available to

o f f e r e m o t i o n a l

support,” Frank said.

Stein has been caring

for patients at Sandusky

OVH since the mid-1990s. In early

2011 Stein opened a 22-bed unit in

Georgetown, and in the past year

Frank has focused on building a

strong hospice team in Southern

Ohio. “Given the small size of the

team, they have done a phenomenal

job,” he said.

At both homes, Frank continues

to review and update best

practices so Stein

can deliver its wide

range of services,

r a n g i n g f r o m

cosmetology to

continuous care and

palliative medicine.

A native of Perry

County, Frank now

lives in Sandusky.

Prior to joining Stein

Hospice he worked

for several nursing

facilities in the

Toledo area. He has two

daughters, Julie Frost, a history

professor in Michigan, and Jenny

Swinehart, a special needs teacher

in Florida.

Road Soldiers News The first ride of the 2012

cycling season was

accomplished on 26 April

dodging between early

morning rains (that were

diminishing to endpoint)

and strong northerly cool-

to-cold winds that beat on

the riders on their return to

Elmore. The inaugural

ride was from Elmore, at

the Elmore Cycle and

Fitness Center (a.k.a. “the

Elmore Bike Shop”),

down the trail to Lindsey

and Fremont and then

return. At least that was

the plan…

The ride followed a

wonderful luncheon at the

American Legion Post in

Elmore, Post 279, were we

were treated to some

d e l i c i o u s T a n k ’ s

hamburgers prepared to

perfection by the men of

the Post. This provender

prepared us to greet the

vagaries of the weather on

the North Coast Inland

Trail.

Incidentally, Post 279, in

Elmore, will be part and

parcel of the pending visit

of the Moveable Viet Nam

Wall in August. The Wall

will be coming to Elmore

on the 9th and will leave

on the 13th. In between

those set up and tear down

da tes , the Elmore

community with the

mutual support and aid of

various other groups, in

particular the Ottawa

County Veterans Service

Office, will be hosting a

range of programs and

remembrance for veterans

of the Viet Nam Era,

specifically, and all

veterans, generally.

The Road Soldiers is

helping in doing a Fun

Ride in conjunction with

the visit of the Wall,

currently just called “The

Wall Ride,” and seeking to

get things in order for that

commemorative occasion.

More details will be

forthcoming on our

website as it is rebuilt by

our new webmaster.

Watch for these on

www.roadsoldiers.org. as

time passes. The Wall

Ride will be on the 11th of

August, a Saturday, and

will be what is known as a

“fun ride,” meaning that it

will NOT be a race or

timed, but for recreational

purpose.

The Wall Ride, however,

will likely incorporate a

“Mi l e o f S i l e n c e /

Remembrance,” and riders

will be asked to observe

this in memory of the

veterans who “gave it all”

in the defense of the

nation. We may even do a

miniature American Flag

“planting” alongside of the

trail for this “mile” to

mark the remembrance of

our nation’s heroes.

Again, more will follow…

Back to our North Coast

Inland Trail ride of 26

April, 14 members of the

club turned out for this

first ride of the season.

All of our trikers finished

the course and all of the

r iders managed to

complete at least ten

miles. Joe got confused

and forgot to return to

Elmore and we picked him

up at the Walter Avenue

Fremont Trailhead. Our

fearless chairman made it

to Fremont and turned

about and headed back

toward Elmore only to

suffer ride-ending cramps

in Lindsey where our 14

passenger van picked him

up. That’s well over 15

miles in the cold and at

least 5 against the strong

head winds. Next time,

Quentin will eat a banana

or two before his mega-

output rides!

Our next ride is scheduled

for our Rain Date on 11

May on the Slippery Elm

Trail between Bowling

G r e e n a n d N o r t h

Baltimore. We’ll have

supper at the North

Baltimore Legion Post that

has been long-suffering

over us! We have stood

them up (due to incessant

rains) for the past three

years. This year, we’re

going to the North

Baltimore Legion for

supper come wind or,

literally, high water.

Looking well ahead, the

protracted variable and

just plain nasty weather

will, ultimately, break way

for summer warmth. Keep

the faith and keep riding

until it gets here – just put

on the layers and the tights

on the lower extremities.

Eventually, summer will

get here…

Yours in wheelin’ about,

Lance N. Franke, Staff Liaison Road Soldiers Cycling Club, OVH

C-Unit Residents enjoy a friendly

competition on their Wii.

Oh, blessed June. What a wonderful month.

Activities abound. Busy is an understatement.

There are many themes that flourish during the

month of June. Such as:

National Rose Month (our National

flower)

Graduation celebrations

Weddings, of course

National Safety Month and

National Fruit and Vegetable Month

These last two, Safety and Health, make me think

about two areas of our lives that deeply interest God.

How do I know? Because He provided a huge amount

of direction regarding our lives and these two issues.

For instance: Safety, check these out:

Lev 25:18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and

keep mine ordinances and do them; and ye shall

dwell in the land in safety.

Deu 12:10 and he giveth you rest from all your

enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;

Pro 21:31 The horse is prepared against the day of

battle: but safety is of the LORD.

So, June is the month to be reminded, that no matter

what turmoil or storms of life may come, real peace

and safety can be found from trusting the author of real

safety, and that is our Heavenly Father.

Do you know what the Bible says about Nutrition and

Health? Our Creator God is vitally interested in you,

His investment. Many advertisements include the

statement, “it’s heart healthy.” But the best health

advice you’ll find comes out of the Scripture.

Check these out:

Psa 22:26 The meek shall eat and be

satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that

seek him: your heart shall live for ever.

Pro 16:24 Pleasant words are as a

honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to

the bones.

3Jn 1:2 Beloved, I wish above all things

that you may prosper and be in health, even

as thy soul prospers.

The church has always been in the health care

business. Jesus spent his three years of ministry

preaching, teaching and healing, but Jesus was most

known among the people as a healer. The crowds that

followed him

requested a

healing touch

more often

than a holy

word. He of-

fered whole-

n e s s a n d

health to those

who were in

pain, in dis-

tress, in the

darkness of blindness or the disarray of a troubled

mind and spirit. He tended to the needs of their

stomach as well as to their souls. What He did then,

He still does today. So, if you think about Health and

Safety this month, please think about it with eternity

in mind! 8 Georgetown

Support Our Troops

The 10th annual Brown County

Support Our Troops rally was held

Tuesday, May 15 at the Ohio

Veterans Home Georgetown.

Featured speakers were Sandra

Vorhies, the soon-to-be State

Commander of the Ohio Department

of AMVETS and famed wildlife

artist John Ruthven.

Ruthven, a long time Georgetown

resident, delighted the audience was

several hilarious stories of his Navy

duty on a submarine chaser during

World War II. Ruthven is a member

of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

This month Vorhies will become the

first woman to hold the post of

AMVETS State Commander.

Looking at the crowd from around

Georgetown and the surrounding

area, she remarked that she loved to

come to OVH-G because the

community embraces the facility.

Indeed, the community was a big

part of the program again this year.

Sydney Michael, a 7th grade student

from next-door Adams County,

whose grandfather is a resident of

OVH-G, sang the National Anthem;

Pearl Harbor Survivor Joe Whitt led

the Pledge of Allegiance; Western

Brown High School’s Army JROTC

program provided the Color Guard.

admiration and

respect should be

given to those who

when they return

home. There is

much integrity

and dignity in

those who show

this commitment.”

two tours in Iraq.
