Overview During Operation Guardian of the Walls, May 10-21, 2021, the Palestinian terrorist

organizations in the Gaza Strip launched 4,360 rockets at Israeli cities and towns in a

systematic attempt to harm as many civilians as possible. Twelve Israelis, two of them

children, were killed by rocket fire and one IDF soldier was killed by an anti-tank missile. 680

of the rockets fell inside the Gaza Strip, killing at least 21 people, 10 men, two women and

nine children: among the ten men, one was Hamas operative, one Palestinian Islamic Jihad

(PIJ) operative and one Fatah member.

During the operation the IDF attacked about 1,500 terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip, the

overwhelming majority with precision weaponry. An analysis of names of the 236

Palestinians killed in the attacks indicated that at least 114 of them (48.3%) belonged to

terrorist organizations, most to the military-terrorist wings of Hamas and the PIJ: 65

belonged to Hamas, 20 to the PIJ, 25 to Fatah, two to the Popular Front for the Liberation

of Palestine (PFLP), one to the Mujahedeen Brigades1 and one to the Popular Resistance

Committees. Eleven of the men between the ages of 17 and 40 were killed in IDF attacks on

terrorist targets but we have no information linking them to terrorist organizations (one of

them was a driver for a terrorist squad). At least five who were operatives of Hamas'

military-terrorist wing were also operatives in Hamas' security forces (police, naval

police or internal security forces). It has often been found that operatives of Hamas' military-

terrorist wing were also operatives in its security forces.2

Of the Gazans killed by IDF attacks who had no terrorist organization affiliation, 52 were

children, 38 were women and five were 70 years old or older. Many of the Gazans who were

killed as a result of IDF attacks and are not identified as affiliated with terror organizations

were killed because they were in proximity to terrorist operatives or targets during an attack,

the result of Hamas' situating its terrorist installations near or under civilian structures: one

prominent example was the collapse of two buildings under which Hamas had built one of

its terrorist tunnels. One death was reported when an IDF tank opened fire to chase non-

combatant Palestinians away from the border.3 The deaths of four Gazans were reported

without their ages.

Yahya al-Sinwar, head of the Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip, admitted that

the organization's military positions were located within the civilian population,

confessing it was a "problem" (al-Jazeera, June 5, 2021).4

Number of fatalities

There are several Palestinian versions of the overall number of Gazans killed during the

hostilities.

According to the latest update from the ministry of health in Gaza (June 3, 2021),

256 people were killed and 1,948 were wounded (ministry of health in Gaza Facebook

page, May 24, 2021).

According to Wafa, the Palestinian Authority (PA) news agency, 257 people were

killed (Wafa, May 30, 2021).

According to the al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, a Hamas-affiliated

Palestinian NGO operating in the Gaza Strip that documents IDF activity, 248 people

were killed, 66 children and 39 women (al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, May 22,

2021).

According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, 247 people were killed, 66

children and 39 women (Palestinian Center for Human Rights, May 21, 2021).

According to Defense for Children International – Palestine, 67 Palestinian

children were killed; no other statistic was provided (Defense for Children

International – Palestine, May 21, 2021).

According to Yahya al-Sinwar, 90 operatives from the Palestinian organizations

were killed (al-Jazeera, June 5, 2021).

The Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center (ITIC) carried out a detailed analysis of

the information from the above and other sources of 262 names of Gazans killed during

Operation Guardian of the Walls. It was found that 155 were men (ten killed by rocket

misfires), 41 were women and 62 were children under the age of 16, nine of whom were

killed by rocket misfires. The ages of four could not be verified.

As in previous operations and this time to a greater degree, the ministry of health in Gaza

and the terrorist organizations provided only scanty information about terrorist operatives

who were killed. Exceptions were the high-ranking operatives, whose deaths were formally

announced by their organizations. The Hamas administration has been trying to create the

impression that the overwhelming majority of fatalities were non-combatant civilians. The

ministry of health in Gaza stressed the number of women, children and aged, as opposed to

its past policy of publishing detailed lists of the names of all those killed. The social media

and official media outlets have also represented a significant percentage of terrorist

operatives as "civilians," for the same reason, that is, to promote the narrative that most of

the fatalities were non-combatants.

Methodology

Lacking organized lists of names, the ITIC's researchers based their results on a variety of

Palestinian sources. They included data from the ministry of health in Gaza, reports issued

by human rights organizations including the al-Mezan Center for Human Rights

(www.megan.org), the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (www.pchrgaza.org) and

Defense for Children International – Palestine. Information was also gathered from the Wafa

news agency, the websites of the Palestinian organizations' military-terrorist wings, the Arab

media and the social networks.

It can be stated that the overwhelming majority of the terror organizations affiliated

fatalities were identified as Hamas and PIJ military-terrorist wing operatives. However, it

was hard to determine absolutely how many Fatah members were terrorist operatives who

actively participated in the hostilities or were targets for elimination or attack because of

their military-terrorist activities.

In addition, at least 11 Gazans who died as a result of IDF attacks were between the ages of

17 and 40 and could have been targeted, but the Palestinian sources make no mention of

their organizational affiliation.

There are also five fatalities whose deaths, according to the Palestinians, are not currently

attributed to the IDF, and the Palestinians are still investigating the incident:

Moussa Khamis, 18, killed on May 10, 2021, at the Al-Omari Mosque in Jabalia.

An investigation is also underway into an attack on the home of Iyad Abd al-

Fattah Dib Salha, on Al-Barakah Street in Deir al-Balah on May 19, 2021. Three

family members were killed in the incident.

On May 19, at 16:10, the home of Iyad Amin al-Qudra in southern Deir al-Balah

was hit by a missile or rocket. His wife Fida Fakhri Samih al-Qudra was killed in the

attack. The incident was not attributed to the IDF in the reports of the human

rights centers (Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights website, May 20, 2021; Palestinian

Center for Human Rights website, May 20, 2021).

The fatalities and the circumstances of their death According to the al-Mezan Center for Human Rights, a pro-Hamas human rights

organization operating in Gaza, the first incident resulting in fatalities occurred on May 10,

2021, at 18:10, when the home of the al-Masri family in Beit Hanoun was reportedly hit

by a rocket. It was not stated in the report whether it was the IDF or the terrorist

organizations that fired (al-Mezan Center, May 11, 2021). 5

Another Palestinian human rights organization, the Defense for Children International --

Palestine, stated that at the time of the incident "armed organizations" (i.e., Palestinian

terrorist organizations) were firing rockets, but Israeli UAVs were also observed in the area.

The organization noted that it was still investigating the incident and that it could not yet

determine what caused the fatalities at the home of the al-Masri family (www.dci-

palestine.org, May 11, 2021).6

Since rockets were mentioned, and since the IDF had not yet launched its operation when

the incident occurred, it can be assumed it was a failed launch or fire by terrorist

organizations in the Gaza Strip. Nevertheless, the Arab media in Gaza treated the incident as

an Israeli "massacre," and exploited the incident for propaganda purposes against Israel,

even though Palestinian organizations have stated the cause of their deaths has not yet

been determined.

According to the al-Mezan Center, eight people were killed in the incident, including six

children (al-Mezan Center website, May 11, 2021). 7

The dead were:

Mohammad Ali Mohammad Nosseir, 20, from Beit Hanoun (al-Mezan Center, May 11,

According to the al-Mezan Center, on May 10, 2021, at around 22:15, three Palestinians

were hit in an airstrike in the al-Manara neighborhood in southern Khan Yunis. One of them

died of his wounds several hours later. He was Salim Mohammad Salim al-Fara, 37,

resident of Khan Yunis. The al-Mezan Center described him as a “civilian.” However, an ITIC

examination revealed that he was a Hamas operative. According to his family's website, he

On May 11, 2021, at 04:40, the Israeli Air Force attacked the top floor of a seven-story

building in the Shati refugee camp, west of Gaza City. Reportedly, two people were killed (al-

The IDF announced it had attacked the house of Iyad Fathi Fayeq Sharir, the head of the

Hamas anti-tank units in the Gaza Strip, adding he had been killed (IDF Spokesman,

according to Israel’s Channel 13 News, May 11, 2021). The Palestinian Ma'an News Agency

released a photo showing him in the Hamas uniform (Ma'an News Agency, May 12, 2021). The

al-Mezan Center reported that he was killed as a result of firing at a two-story building (it did

not specify where). Iyad’s wife Layali Sharir and their 15-year-old daughter Lina were

also killed (al-Mezan Center, May 12, 2021).52 Further examination revealed that the building

which was attacked was Sharir’s home in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood in Gaza

(Ma'an, May 11, 2021).53

On May 11, 2021, Hamas’s military wing issued an unusual statement stating the IDF

had attacked a target where its operatives were preparing “to repel aggression.”

According to the statement, Hamas operatives were killed in the attack while others were

MIA (Izz al-Din al-Qassam’s Telegram account, May 11, 2021).55 It was further stated that

there were five to seven missing operatives in a tunnel which was attacked in Qarara, in

northeastern Khan Yunis (al-Ayyam, May 12, 2021).e According to social media reports, th 56

tunnel was situated in Qarara, in the Khan Yunis district, and there were seven fatalities,

residents of the Amal neighborhood in Khan Yunis. According to one post the Izz al-Din al-

Qassam Brigades had reported the death of their operatives in the tunnel on their

According to Palestinian reports, the two brothers worked on their father’s poultry farm

near the Deir al-Balah beach, situated near “resistance” positions in southwestern Deir al-

Balah. It was so close to the outposts that shrapnel fell near the farm every time the

positions were attacked. According to the family, they were killed by a missile fired from a

UAV when the Israeli Air Force attacked the terrorist positions near the farm (Palinfo, May 13,

2021).64

On May 12, 2021, at 01:35, the Israeli Air Force attacked an apartment in the Tel al-Hawa

neighborhood in western Gaza City. Wael Abd al-Karim Issa and Hassan al-Qahwaji, two

Hamas operatives, were killed. Rima Saad Kamel Saad, Zaid Mohammad al-Talabani, 5,

and Hala Hussein Rifi, 13, were also killed (al-Mezan Center, May 12, 2021).65

On the morning of May 12, 2021, the Israeli Air Force attacked a site where senior Hamas

commanders, including Gaza Brigade Commander Bassem Issa, were present. A total of 14

people were killed, all Hamas operatives. Hamas confirmed the death of Bassem Issa,

Brigade commander of the Gaza City, and a “group of his fellow commanders and jihad

fighters,” without mentioning their names (Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades website, May 12,

2021). A video of the funeral procession was uploaded to the web, where their names were

read, “commander” Sami Radwan, Hazem al-Khatib, Awad Abu Salmiya, Mujahed al-

Hadidi, Zafer al-Shawa, Akram al-Attar, Jamal al-Zebda, Osama al-Zebda, Abu Mojahed

Talha (i.e., Jomaa Talha), all of them Hamas operatives. In the funeral procession, all

bodies were covered with Hamas flags (al-Araby al-Jadeed, May 14, 2021).69

They were:

Mohammad Jamil Fares, 37. He studied mechanical engineering at Tishreen

University in Latakia, Syria, where he was an student activist. In 2005, Hamas’s overseas

military operations department launched a project for the manufacture of UAVs and

began to amass equipment and recruit engineers. The unit was headed by Muhammad

al-Zouari. After Fares graduated in 2007 he received a job offer from the unit to work on

the project in the military production division. He accepted the offer and worked with

Zouari, serving as his right hand man in developing many models. In 2011, he returned to

the Gaza Strip, together with his doctor wife, the daughter of a senior Hamas figure

abroad, whom he had met in Syria, and their son Fares. In the Gaza Strip he worked on

aircraft manufacture and the development of new models, and was also in charge of

training engineers. He achieved prominence after Operation Pillar of Defense and the

attack on the aircraft manufacturing workshop where he worked. During Operation

Protective Edge, his home and the home of his family in Khan Yunis were attacked

(Palinfo, May 19, 2021; al-Jazeera Mubasher, May 31, 2021)70.

Mahmoud Mohammad Fares (Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades website, May 25, 2021)71

Jamal Mohammad Said Abd al-Rahman al-Zebda. al-Zebda had a doctorate in

Engineering and Mechanical Sciences from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State

University. He was a US citizen. His studies in aerodynamics and the delta wing were

used in the manufacture of fighter jets, including the F-35, and were published in journals

and scientific literature, forming the basis for the development of aircraft engines. In

1994, he returned to the Gaza Strip and served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering

at the Islamic University. In 2006, he joined a covert team of engineers operating as part

of Hamas’s military wing on the development of military capabilities, including the rocket

program. He worked closely with team leader Muhammad al-Deif. He taught an entire

generation of engineers at the Islamic University, and recruited many of them to join the

military wing’s program for the development of military means, mainly rockets and UAVs.

In 2012, Jamal al-Zebda survived an assassination attempt in the final hours of Operation

Pillar of Defense (al-Akhbar, May 22, 2021)72.

His son, engineer Osama al-Zebda, 39, (33 according to a different report) also

joined Hamas and holds US citizenship.

Jomaa Abdullah Muhammad al-Talha, was a Jordanian of Palestinian descent born

in 1962. He was raised with Muslim Brotherhood ideology, including by Abdullah Azzam

(who later became the spiritual mentor of Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan). He

studied engineering at the University of Jordan. In 1982, he traveled to Lebanon, where

he fought against the IDF in the First Lebanon War. In 1983, he moved to Pakistan to join

the Arab jihad fighters in the war in Afghanistan under the leadership of Abdullah

Azzam. There he acquired expertise in the manufacture of small arms and military

equipment. After several years he returned to Jordan and specialized in construction.

From Jordan he moved to the UAE, where he founded a contracting company. After

Hamas’s military wing established the military production division in Syria, as part of its

overseas military operations department (al-I’mar), a senior operative was needed to

manage the production division. Al-Talha responded to the call, left the UAE for Syria in

2007, and became the director of the production division six months later. In 2009, the

Hamas leadership invited him to the Gaza Strip. He was detained en route by the

Egyptian security forces and remained in prison until 2011. After his release he went to

the Gaza Strip, where he was put in charge of cyber security and scientific development in

the military wing (Shehab, May 17, 2021; aljazeera.net, May 24, 2021)74.

On May 12, 2021, at 16:20, Hamad Ayad Mansour al-Dabari, 86, was hit by shrapnel near

his home in the Zalata area of the village of al-Shuka in east Rafah (al-Mezan Center, May 13,

2021).119 It may have been a failed rocket launch.

On May 12, 2021 at 17:30, the Israeli Air Force attacked the town of al-Fukhari in

southeast Khan Yunis. The attack killed 11-year-old Ammar Taysir Aish al-Amour and 13-

year-old Hamada Attia Abed al-Amour (al-Mezan Center, May 13, 2021).120

On May 12, 2021 at 18:30, the Israeli Air Force attacked a squad (“a group of people,"

according to the al-Mezan Center) near the al-Ihsan Mosque in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

On May 12, 2021, at 19:30, the body of Mohammad Ahmed Abd Abu Amsha, 35, was

brought to the hospital in Beit Hanoun, having been found in a military post in central Beit

Hanoun. The post was attacked by the IDF on May 10, 2021 at 19:30 (al-Mezan Center, May

13, 2021).129 According to the website of Hamas’s military wing, he was a Hamas operative

(Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades website).130

Abu Sharakh al-Madhoun, 66, were killed (al-Mezan Center, May 13, 2021).133 In other

sources, she appears as a 60-year-old Hijar Mohammad Ali Abu Sharakh (al-Madhoun)

At 09:10 on May 13, 2021, Israeli Air Force planes attacked the al-Taimat neighborhood in

eastern al-Fukkhari, eastern Khan Yunis. Abd al-Aziz al-Hamid Abd al-Aati Abu To'eima, 24,

was killed in the attack (al-Mezan Center, May 13, 2021).137 According to the PFLP website, he

was an operative in the artillery unit of the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, the organization's

military wing (PFLP website, May 23, 2021).138

On the afternoon of May 14, 2021, Mahmoud Muhammad Ahmed al-Madhoun, 30, was

declared dead. He was wounded by shrapnel while close to his house on May 12, 2021, at

13:00, when the Israeli Air Force attacked in eastern the Hala al-Shawa clinic in Beit Lahia (al-

Mezan Center, May 15, 2021; the Palestinian Center for Human Rights website, May 15,

2021).139 The Fatah branch in the northern Gaza Strip issued a mourning notice for him,

saying he belonged to their ranks. His body was wrapped for burial in a Fatah flag (Nashat

At 13:00 on May 17, 2021, Yahya Mansour Ghaben, 22, was declared dead at the Shifaa

Medical Center. He had been wounded on the evening of May 13, 2021, by IDF artillery fire

targeting an anti-tank missile launching squad near the American Hospital (PCHR website,

May 18, 2021).154 Hamas' military wing said Yahya Mansour Ghaben, from Beit Lahia, was a

At 21:15 on May 14, 2021, shrapnel from a rocket or missile fell near the house of Issa

Obeid on al-Nuzha Street in Jabalia, killing Butheina Mahmoud Issa Obeid, six years old,

who suffered from cerebral palsy, who was playing in front of the house. Defense for

Children International -- Palestine reported that the source of the rocket or missile was

"unknown" (al-Mezan Center website, May 15, 2021; PCHR website, May 15, 2021; www.dci-

palestine.org, May 15, 2021).188 The shrapnel may have come from rocket that misfired.

At 23:55 on May 14, 2021, a missile was launched at the garden of Hatem Mahmoud

Hamed al-Mansi, immediately to the south of the Abd al-Raziq Qalibo mosque in in eastern

Beit Lahia, which had been attacked and destroyed several minutes earlier. Three Gazans

were killed:

At 01:30 on May 15, 2021, the Israeli Air Force attacked the house of Alaa Muhammad

Abd al-Alam Abu Hatab (Abu Youssef Abu Hatab) in the al-Shati refugee camp. The house

was completely destroyed. According to official reports nine people were killed in the attack,

two women and seven children, but pictures of the funeral showed ten bodies. One body

On the evening of May 15, 2021, Ahmed Iyad Ahmed Fatouh, 22, was declared dead. He

was wounded in an attack at 22:40 on May 13, 2021. He owned a car wash business at the

entrance to al-Zuweida, about 6 miles south of Gaza City (al-Mezan Center website, May 16,

2021; PCHR website, May 16, 2021).197 He was a cousin of Rawhi Fatouh, a member of Fatah's

in Gaza City. According to al-Mezan Center, the Abu al-Auf clan building was allegedly

attacked, as were the building belonging to the al-Qulaq (or al-Kulak) clan, and the

headquarters of the Hamas ministry of labor. The nearby al-Auf building was also allegedly

attacked. The buildings, which were atop tunnels dug by Hamas, collapsed. According to the

first official reports, 30 Palestinians were killed, nine of them women and 11 children (al-

Mezan Center website, May 16, 2021; PCHR website, May 16, 2021). On May 16, 2021, a

spokesman for the ministry of health in Gaza reported the number of fatalities had risen to

2021, on May 16, 2021, 13 additional bodies were extracted from the rubble, bringing the

total number of women killed to 12 and children to 18 (al-Mezan Center website, May 17,

number of Palestinians killed was 45.

Ashtiwi clan on 10th Street in southern Gaza City was attacked. Mahmoud (or Muhammad)

At 03:00 on May 19, 2021, the Israeli Air Force attacked Terrorist operatives located on

the northwestern side of the fifth floor (or top floor, according to the PCHR) of the five-story

Zaarab Building near the Saraya Junction in the center of Gaza City (al-Mezan Center

website, May 19, 2021; PCHR website, May 19, 2021). The social networks reported the death

of Bilal Abu al-Mankush, a high-ranking operative in PIJ's military wing, his wife and son,

Bilal (Twitter account of @Nonymous51240670, May 19, 2021; to of @AsdzakA, May 19,

2021).247 They later reported four others had died in the attack: Omar al-Kurdi; Ahmed al-

Hadad, Hassan Salem and Bilal al-Mankush (Twitter account of @Hakeam_shatella, May

19, 2021; Twitter account of Mansour Rian, May 19, 2021).248 According to the al-Mezan

Center, two Palestinians were killed:

Omar Muhammad Amin al-Mankush, 19 or 20 (al-Mezan Center website, May 19,

2021; PCHR website, May 19, 2021). The social networks referred to him as Omar Amin

al-Kurdi or Omar Amin al-Kurdi al-Mankush. A mourning tent was erected for him at

the family home near the Abu Hanifa al-Naman mosque in the Tel al-Awa

neighborhood of Gaza City. A video taken at the tent shows several Hamas flags, a

possible indication of a clan connection to the movement (Facebook page of his

At 11:00 on May 19, 2021, Firas Alaa Muhammad al-Bahri, 20, was declared dead at the

Shifaa Medical Center. He was wounded at 13:45 on May 13, 2021, by shrapnel from an Israeli

missile fired at "a [so-called] group of Palestinians" near Building 19 of the al-Nada Towers in

Izbat Beit Hanoun. Fatah's Bahaa Abu Jarrad sub-branch in the northern Gaza Strip issued a

On the evening of May 19, 2021, the body of Aysar Abd al-Rahim Taha al-Halabi, 48, was

brought to the Shifaa Medical Center. He was from the al-Shati refugee camp and killed in

one of the attacks; his body was found under the rubble (al-Mezan Center website, May 20,

2021; PCHR website, May 20, 2021).256 According to the social networks, his body was found

after four days (Twitter account of Wa'el Abu Omar, May 20, 2021; Twitter account of Abo

Mahmaud Salama, May 20, 2021).257 According to Hamas' military wing he was a field

At 14:00 on May 19, 2021, the IDF fired artillery at houses at the end of al-Qarman Street

in in eastern Beit Hanoun. One shell hit the third floor of Zakariya Muhammad Hamas' house

and his son, Ra'ed Zakariya Muhammad Hamad, 32, was killed (al-Mezan Center website,

May 20, 2021; PCHR website, May 20, 2021). The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

(PFLP) issued a mourning notice for him stating he had been a member of the organization

since 2006 and an operative in its military wing, the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, since 2012

(Bowabat al-Hadaf, May 19, 2021).259

At 16:00 on May 19, 2021, the house of Iyad Abd al-Fattah Dib Salha on Baraka Street in

Deir al-Balah was hit by a missile or artillery shell. The reports of the PCHR did not relate

the event to the IDF (al-Mezan Center website, May 20, 2021; PCHR website, May 20, 2021).260

According to the Defense for Children International -- Palestine report, the organization is

continuing its investigation to determine if the attack was carried out by an Israeli Air Force

plane or an IDF UAV (www.dci-palestine.org, May 20, 2021).261

Those who were killed were:

Iyad Abd al-Fattah Dib Salha, 34 or 35, who used a wheelchair.

Amani Yussef Salha (Mahoush), 29, wife of Iyad Abd al-Fattah Dib Salha, eight

months pregnant. The PCHR related to her unborn child as a victim of the attack,

noting four, not three deaths, which may have influenced the total number of

Palestinians killed.

The Fatah movement in the central Gaza Strip issued a mourning notice referring to them

were not added to the list of Palestinians killed in Operation Guardian of the Walls.

At 16:10 on May 19, 2021, the house of Iyad Amin al-Qudra in southern Deir al-Balah was

hit by a missile or rocket. The reports of the PCHR did not relate the event to the IDF (al-

Mezan Center website, May 20, 2021; PCHR website, May 20, 2021). The attack killed his wife,

Fida Fakhri Samih al-Naja, 32 (according to the al-Mezan Center, she was Fida Yahya Samih

al-Qudra, 34). The Fatah branch in the central Gaza Strip issued a mourning notice for her

At 16:20 on May 19, 2021, (16:10 according to the al-Mezan Center) the IDF attacked the in

eastern part of the village of Juhor ad-Dik Hassan Sami Radwan al-Burnu (according to the

al-Mezan Center, Hassan Sami Hassan al-Burnu), 63, was killed while he was in the fields

[nearby] (al-Mezan Center website, May 20, 2021; PCHR website, May 20, 2021).

At 20:05 on May 19, 2021,an IDF UAV attacked the rear of the house of Sa'ad Ali Asaliya in

the Shashah region in in eastern Jabalia. His daughter Dima Sa'ad Ali Asaliya, ten years old,

was killed while bringing an oven to her sister's house (al-Mezan Center website, May 20,

2021; PCHR website, May 20, 2021; www.dci-palestine.org, May 20, 2021). Sa'ad Ali Asaliya is

a Fatah member (Facebook page of Sa'ad Ali Asaliya).264 The Fatah branch in the northern

Gaza Strip issued a mourning notice for Dina Sa'ad Ali Asaliya (Nashat Iqlim al-Shimal

Facebook page, May 19, 2021).265

At 05:10 on May 20, 2021, the Israeli Air Force attacked the house of Muhammad Khaled

al-Khawaldeh in the al-Sater al-Gharbi region in the Khan Yunis district. The house was

destroyed and nearby houses were damaged, including the house of Naaleh Rabia al-

Khuznar. Hoda Salah Rabia al-Khuznar, 36, was killed in the attack (al-Mezan Center

At 11:55 on May 20, 2021, "a [so-called] group of Palestinians" was attacked in the al-

Atatra area of northern Beit Lahia. Hisham Shaher Muhammad al-Sharfa was killed in the

attack (al-Mezan Center website, May 20, 2021; PCHR website, May 21, 2021).266 The Salah al-

Din Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, stated that Hisham

Shaher Muhammad al-Sharfa, 28, was an operative in its artillery unit (Salah al-Din Brigades

At 16:40 on May 20, 2021, the Israeli Air Force attacked a white Skoda Citgo in the al-

Saftawi neighborhood in western Jabalia. Two Palestinians were killed and the vehicle was

destroyed (PCHR, May 21, 2021).268 They were:

Maysara Abd al-Shakur Misbah al-Arir, 22, from the Sajaiya neighborhood of

On the morning of May 21, 2021, the body of Mariam Muhammad Odeh al-Talabani, 3

years old, was found under the rubble of her father's house in Gaza City, which was attacked

on May 11, 2021 (PCHR, May 21, 2021).

On May 23, 2021, the Nidal al-Amoudi Brigades of Fatah's military wing, the al-Aqsa

Martyrs' Brigades, announced the death Mahmoud Ammar Abu Jarrad (Abu Ammar), who

was an operative in the artillery unit in the Beit Hanoun region (al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades

website, May 24, 2021).270 He was severely wounded in an Israeli Air Force attack on a

terrorist squad in Beit Hanoun on May 11, 2021 (Wafa, May 24, 2021; Bowabat al-Hadaf, May

Terrorist operatives killed when the tunnel in Qarara in the southern Gaza Strip was

attacked on May 11, 2021. After Operation Guardian of the Walls ended it became known

that two tunnels had been attacked in in eastern Khan Yunis, one in the region of Qarara and

the other in the region of al-Fakhari. Nine bodies of Terrorist operatives were removed from

the tunnels (Watan News Agency, May 21, 2021; al-Ayam, May 22, 2021, qudsnet.com, May 24,

Other deaths

The name of Doaa Iyad Sharab, 12 years old, appears on the list of Palestinians killed in

Operation Guardian of the Walls by the Wafa News Agency. According to the mourning

notice issued by the family, she was hospitalized in an ICU following complications from the

injuries she sustained in proximity to the attack on her house in the Amal neighborhood of

Khan Yunis (Facebook page of the Sharab clan, May 20, 2021).302 Khaled Jamaa, cultural

affairs editor at the Wafa News Agency, reported that when the IDF attacked the Amal

neighborhood near Doaa Iyad Sharab's house she became frightened, "her heart stopped

beating" and she collapsed, her head hitting the floor. Her father took her to the hospital

where a subdural hematoma was found. After four days in an ICU, she died on May 20, 2021

(Facebook page of Khaled Jamaa, May 26, 2021).303

On May 16, 2021, the death of Darwish Muhammad Darwish al-Yazuri, 61 or 62, from

Khan Yunis, was reported, following the IDF attack on the night of May 156, 2021 (Twitter

account of Radio al-Aqsa, May 16, 2021; Twitter account of alresala.net, My 16, 2021).304

According to the reports, he died of a heart attack during the attack on the house of Yahya

al-Sinwar, which was close to his own (Facebook page of Mahmoud al-Yazuri, May 16, 2021,

Twitter account of Nada Dergham, May 16, 2021).305 His name is not on Wafa's list of

Palestinians killed in Operation Guardian of the Walls or in the reports issued by human

rights organizations.

On May 17, 2021, the death of Ibrahim Hassan Othman (Mahmoud) al-Astal, 73, from

Khan Yunis, was reported. He died after having been wounded in an Israeli attack a number

of days previously (website of the al-Astal clan, May 17, 2021; Twitter account of the

Palestine al-Hadath Agency, May 17, 2021; Facebook page of Mahmoud al-Khatib, May 17,

2021).306 According to several reports, the attack was carried out on May 15 or 16, 2021
