Overview of the Purdue PLM Certificate Program

Nathan Hartman, Ed.D. Professor of Computer Graphics Technology

Director, Product Lifecycle Management Center Director, Strategic Research Area in Advanced Manufacturing

Motivation for the PLM Certificate Program?

• A need to bridge the gap between corporate decision to practice PLM and feature/function software tool training.

• Tools and processes affect the way people work. • A business and product realization approach that

utilizes interconnected set of digital systems to create, leverage, and disseminate product definition data and enable collaboration and innovation throughout the phases of life of product.

Where have we been on the collaboration journey?

Collaboration meant face-to-face

communication

Communications and data movement

sometimes happened real-time

You trusted the data because you trusted the person that

generated the data

Where have we been on the collaboration journey?

Maintenance and Repair

The 3D digital definition becomes the conduit in a standards-based communication process

The model is the basis for a secure, authoritative source of product definition You come to trust the

process that generates product data (as the person may be unknown)

Preparing a PLM Workforce

• Developing the requisite computing infrastructure • Training on appropriate tools • Embracing digital data and its role in innovation • Stress the concept of right data at the right time in the

right form – “fit for purpose” • Virtually perfect and trusting the process – Data Quality

Overview of Purdue PLM Certificate Program (PLMCP)

Three 5 week synchronous, on-line courses:

Course 1: Introduction to 3D CAD Design in PLM Environments Course 2: Introduction to Product Data and Configuration

Management in PLM Environments Course 3: Introduction to Virtual Manufacturing in PLM Environments

• One lecture session and one laboratory session per week • Students register through Purdue Extended Campus Office • Certificate awarded upon completion of all three courses. • Developed in cooperation with The Boeing Company • Delivered by Computer Graphics Technology Department faculty

from the College of Technology, Purdue University

• Introduction to PLM • Role of 3D Solid Modeling in PLM • Design Process and Design Intent • Parametric Modeling and Features • Assembly Modeling • Geometry and Information Re-use • Modifying and Editing Constraint-based Models • Model Based Definition

Course 1: Introduction to 3D CAD Design in PLM Environments

• Product Data Management • Change Management • Product Structure Management • Configuration Management • Product Definition • Introduction to Workflows • People, Organization, and Security

Course 2: Introduction to Product Data and Configuration in PLM Environments

• Introduction to Virtual Manufacturing • Process Planning • E-BOM, M-BOM, X-BOM • Assembly Planning • JIT and Lean Manufacturing • Work Instructions • Human Factors in Virtual Manufacturing

Course 3: Introduction to Virtual Manufacturing in PLM Environments

Why this is an effective solution? • The program stresses the concepts of PLM and not the

idiosyncrasies of a particular PLM tool. • Allows instructor real-time interaction with all students. • Participants do not need to travel for training • Allows participants to try before they buy • Virtual machines in the cloud means software is not installed on

local machine • Access to fully featured PLM suite of tools to demonstrate concepts • Allows participants from any functional area to see where they fit

into the PLM equation • Only business skills required • Familiarity with engineering software is not required

Why this is different than “commercial” training

• Emphasis of the curriculum is education of the theory and concepts of integrated PLM processes, not tool training.

• Allows Purdue to utilize examples relevant to industry standard toolsets.

• While using a specific PLM toolset for examples, curriculum is applicable to any PLM toolset.

• This is continuing education, not “picks-n-clicks” tool training. • Continuing Education Units (CEUs) awarded
