The reason Safety and Quality are SO important is because we reduce the risk of harm by promoting delivery of the best possible health care.

The change that is coming is directed at improving patient outcomes, quality of care, and patient safety. The idea is that in making these changes, we are putting in place a measure to control the cost of health care. There is no question that nurses improve outcomes for patients in a multitude of settings, but how will Nursing Education need to change to produce nurses that can practice in the new healthcare arena?

Critical Thinking Clinical Decision Making

#Copyright 2011, 2007 by Mosby, Inc., an affiliate of Elsevier Inc.Critical thinking is what we all do everyday how do I get the kids to school, get my studying done, pick-up a gallon of milk, and make dinner? It is the process of prioritizing our lives so that everything gets done.Research has shown that what nurses utilize is a reasoning process called clinical judgment, rather than a problem-solving approach of critical thinking. Clinical judgment is case-based, contextually bound, it includes interpretive reasoning, and a deep background knowledge is essential for setting up expectations of what will be seen with each clinical case. It is also noticing the unexpected, for considering the plausible interpretations, for collecting reasonable evidence, and for choosing the best course of action for each specific patient while providing safe, quality nursing care. Clinical judgment always occurs in the context of the particular patient/client. What are some independent nursing actions that you can provide to improve the safety of the patient and quality outcomes? The decision making process is just an additional aspect of clinical judgment.

Institute of Medicine (IOM): Patient SafetyThe Institute of Medicine defined patient safety as freedom from accidental injury. It is estimated that upwards of 98,000 people die each year as a result of preventable harm from healthcare that is supposed to help them.

The Institute of Medicines (IOM) 2000 report To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System, is to help those in government and the private sector make informed health decisions by providing evidence upon which they can rely.

2. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has funded the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project for three phases. The 1st phase was released in 2005 and is an initiative directed toward educating nurses to provide better outcomes for patients. The Joint CommissionNational Patient Safety Goals

#Copyright 2011, 2007 by Mosby, Inc., an affiliate of Elsevier Inc.#Copyright 2011, 2007 by Mosby, Inc., an affiliate of Elsevier Inc.1. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) mission is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans by developing successful partnerships and generating the knowledge and tools required for long-term improvement. The goal of the research is measurable improvements in health care in America, gauged in terms of improved quality of life, patient outcomes and lives saved. Getting quality health care can help you stay healthy and recover faster when you become sick.

2. In 2002, The Joint Commission established its National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) program; the first set of NPSGs was effective January 1, 2003. The NPSGs were established to help accredited organizations address specific areas of concern in regards to patient safety.

Development of the GoalsA panel of widely recognized patient safety experts advise The Joint Commission on the development and updating of NPSGs. This panel, called the Patient Safety Advisory Group, is composed of nurses, physicians, pharmacists, risk managers, clinical engineers and other professionals who have hands-on experience in addressing patient safety issues in a wide variety of health care settings.

Patient Safety & QualityQuality & Safety Education in Nursing

Safe, effective delivery of patient care requires understanding of the complexity of care delivery, the limits of human factors, safety design principles, characteristics of high reliability organizations, and patient safety resources.

Faculty members nationwide are working to help new nurses gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to continuously improve healthcare and patient outcomes in the systems in which they work. And as I mentioned before - The fact is that getting quality health care can help you stay healthy and recover faster when you become sick. The QSEN initiative compliments the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQs) mission to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans by improving the education of nurses.
