Overview of NTNC and its projects

Conserve, manage and promote nature in all its diversity in Nepal by: balancing human needs with the environment on a

sustainable basis for posterity;

ensuring maximum community participation in which people are both the principal actors and beneficiaries;

giving due cognizance of the linkages between economics, environment and ethics.

Mission Statement

Established in 1982 by the Legislative Act of the parliament of Nepal,

Mandated as an autonomous and not-for-profit organization,

Governed by a Board of Trustees of prominent national and international personalities,

Supported by a network of 6 international chapters in Austria, Canada, France, Japan, the Netherlands and United Kingdom.

NTNC’s Comparative Advantage • Prime Minister of Nepal is the “Patron” of the Trust

and usually the Minister of Forests and Soil Conservation the ‘Chairman’,

• Government strong confidence on NTNC’s ability to deliver,

• Well equipped field stations with qualified staff in 3 conservation areas, 2 national parks, 2 wildlife reserve and Central Zoo in Kathmandu Valley,

Projects of NTNC

Built on work of Nepal Conservation Research and Training Center since 1989 after Smithsonian Institute, USA ended Nepal program.

Focus on wildlife research and monitoring; training of local and international conservation and development workers.

Research on-going on rhinoceros, tigers and their prey species, wild elephants and invasive plants.

Biodiversity Conservation Center (BCC) Chitwan National Park – a World Heritage Site

Bardia Conservation Program (BCP) Bardia National Park

Started as a satellite project to monitor translocated rhinoceros from Chitwan NP to Bardia NP in 1986.

Focus on wildlife research and monitoring, community development and students’ support.

Has been supporting student to conduct research for Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D.

Suklaphanta Conservation Program (SCP) Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve

Started to monitor tiger and translocated rhinos from Chitwan since 1999.

Strong people focused buffer-zone programs especially the disadvantaged groups and janajatis.

Intensive monitoring of wildlife and habitats on-going.

Parsa Conservation Program (PCP) Parsa Wildlife Reserve

Started to monitor wildlife and habitat since 2010.

As large data gaps exists, the focus has been on research on wildlife and their habitats.

The first conservation area and largest protected area 7,629 km2 in Nepal.

Very rich in natural and cultural heritage.

The most popular trekking destination in Nepal.

Pioneer of Integrated Conservation and Development Project (ICDP) model.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) – Kaski, Myagdi, Lamjung, Mustang & Manang

Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) - northern Gorkha

The second ‘conservation area’ under the management of NTNC since 1998 and now extend by the Government till end of 2018.

Extremely remote and neglected area but has high eco-tourism potential.

The region is rich in both natural and cultural heritage.

Gauri-Shankar Conservation Area Project (GCAP) – Dolakha, Ramechhap & Sindhupalchowk

The third ‘conservation area’ under the management of NTNC from 2010 for 20 years.

Corridor between two national parks (Langtang NP and Sagarmatha NP) covering 2,179 sq. km.

High biological richness and cultural diversity.

Huge potential for tourism development.

Central Zoo Kathmandu Valley

Handed over by the Government for management on Dec. 29, 1995 for 30 years.

The only zoo in Nepal for ex-situ conservation, research and conservation breeding.

Conservation education activities for school students and other visitors has become a model for South Asian zoos.
