Location

• Fattoria Resta sits atop a hill on the southern tip of Buonconvento’s district in Siena, Tuscany.

• Part of the recently appointed DOC Orcia, the vineyard is comprised of 6 acres of vines, the majority of which were planted in 2000.

History

• In 1997, Anna Lisa Tempestini and her husband, both formerly of the famed Altesino winery, made the decision to plant vineyards throughout the property

• The winery was founded in 2000, with the first vintage produced in 2004.

• With only six total acres under vine, the winery looks to make the most of their yields by staying true to the character of the Sangiovese grape.

• The grapes are processed and aged in the ancient structure of Fattoria Resta, a Monastery built in 1573, for which the winery is named.

• Under the guidance of experienced oenologist Paolo Caciorgna.

History

• Fattoria Resta produces only one limited-production wine, Martin del Nero — a testament to their commitment to quality rather than quantity.

• In the year 1573, the master builder Martino del Nero engraved his name on a stone column in the wine cellar of the monastery he was building.

• It preserves the properties of the Sangiovese grape, with its strong character and rich, embracing structure.

• Everything is done by hand, from summer and winter pruning to harvesting.

Philosophy

• Anna Lisa Tempestini is dedicated to making wine that reflects the natural characteristics of the Sangiovese grape without being overpowered by the aromas and flavor of wood.

• Because she produces only one wine, she believes it should be elegant and able to age for a few years.

OwnerAnna Lisa Tempestini•Born in Chicago, Illinois.•Her family moved to Florence, Italy when she was 4 years old. •While attending university, she worked part-time in the Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico Gallo Nero office in the Public Relations department organizing tours of Chianti wineries for journalists. •It was during these tours that she would sneak into the laboratories and taste the wines with the inspectors who decided if the wine was worthy of the famous Chianti seal. •At the age of 21, Anna Lisa took a position at Altesino winery, where she met her husband, Claudio Balsa. •She gained invaluable knowledge of Brunello and the Montalcino area. •In 1997, Anna and her husband decided to plant vineyards on the property that surrounds their home.•Named Consigliera for the Consortium of DOC Orcia in 2007.

WinemakerClaudio Basla•Claudio was born in Tornaco (Piedmont). •After graduating from high school, worked for a prominent company in Milan. •In 1975, Claudio’s boss, Giulio Consonno, purchased the Altesino estate, and offered Claudio the opportunity to join him in the wine industry.•Claudio contributed to Brunello di Montalcino’s rise to international prominence. •He is credited with creating the first single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino, the renowned and much sought-after Montosoli. •He was the first to use French barriques, introducing this technique in 1979. •Claudio created the first “estate grappa” (made only with pomace from estate fruit) along with Master Distiller Nannoni in 1977. •He organized the first Brunello futures sale in Tuscany in 1985.
