EcoHero Explanatory Texts

Learning Objective:Students will be able to write a short explanatory text on one of several environment-related topics, with the assistance of a class-generated list of facts and a graphic organizer.

Lesson Summary:1. The teacher provides a selection of 2-4 possible topics for students’ explanatory texts, based on the information presented in the EcoHero game show that the class has previously participated in. For each topic, the class collectively generates a list of facts recalled from the game show activity that students can use in their writing.2. Studentsselecttheirpreferredchoiceoftheavailabletopicsandfilloutagraphic organizer to prepare for writing their text.3. Students compose their text based on their graphic organizer.Lesson variations:• Split up the lesson: Ifdoingtheentirewritingprocessinonelessonperiodisnotagoodfitforyourclass,youmaychoose tobreakthislessonintotwoseparatelessonperiodswithprewritinginthefirstperiodandcomposition in the second period.• Skip the graphic organizer: If your students are unfamiliarwith using graphic organizers or if youwish to shorten the lesson, you may skip the graphic organizer step and have students compose their pieces directly from the lists of facts that the class has created.• Expandwithdraftsandrevisions: If you wish to use this lesson as a more prominent part of your explanatory writing unit, you may choose to extend this lesson into a longer sequence by having students revise their work and write second drafts.

For each topic, the class collectively generates a list of supporting reasons that students can use in their writing.2. Students select theirpreferredchoiceof the threeavailable topicsandfillouta graphic organizer to prepare for writing their piece.3. Learning Objective:Students will be able to write a short narrative about a character making choices to help the environment with the assistance of a graphic organizer and a class-generated list of topics.

Lesson Summary:1. The class creates a list of all the “ways to be an EcoHero” that were discussed in the EcoHero game show activity the class has previously participated in.2. Each student creates a story idea based on one of the items from the list andplansthisstorybyfillingoutagraphic organizer.3. Students write their narrative using the information in their graphic organizer.Lesson variations:• Split up the lesson: If doing the entire writing process in one lesson period is not a good fit for your class, you may choose to break this lesson into two separate lesson periods with prewriting in the first period and composition in the second period. Skip the graphic organizer: If your students are new to narrative writing and/or unfamiliar with using graphic organizers, you may choose to forego the graphic organizer and have students free-write their story instead. A simplified planning process could be to have students simply write the problem and solution that their story will focus on. Expand with drafts and revisions: If you wish to use this lesson as a more prominent part of your narrative writing unit, you may choose to extend this lesson into a longer sequence by having students revise their work and write second drafts.
