Overcoming the Feeling of

Failure at Work

• Failure plays an important part in

our professional life and we must

be aware of its main effects to

avoid further problems.

• It can drain our happiness and

motivation leading us to a feeling

of depression.

Overcoming the feeling of failureIntroduction

“I am not concerned

that you have fallen. I

am concerned that you

arise.”

Abraham Lincoln

• We need to separate failure

from our own identity since

just because we failed it

doesn’t mean we are a failure.

• Failure can destroy our self-

esteem and confidence

affecting our career and

professional goals.

Overcoming the feeling of failureStrategy 01 – Don’t make it personal

• Analyze the failure avoiding feelings of anger,

frustration, blame or regret.

• Ask the following questions:

– Why did I fail?

– What might have produced a better outcome?

– Was the failure completely beyond my control?

– What did I learn from this?

• Think about how you will apply such answers

to better understand your feelings.

Overcoming the feeling of failureStrategy 02 – Analyze your performance

• Being obsessed with a failure will not

change its outcome. In fact, it will

intensify its feelings, trapping us in a

negative emotional state.

• We cannot change our past, but we

can shape our future.

• The faster we take a positive step

forward, the quicker we can leave

these debilitating behavior.

Overcoming the feeling of failureStrategy 03 – Stop being obsessed

• We easily get influenced by what

people say about us and often

our fear of failure is rooted in our

fear of being judged and losing

others’ respect and esteem.

• We should not give too much

power to others’ opinions.

• Remember, this is your life, not

theirs.

Overcoming the feeling of failureStrategy 04 – Release the need for approval of others

• In both our career and personal life,

it can be easy to focus on the

negative events.

• And because of that tendency, it can

feel natural to let one single failure

completely redefine our career path

or project.

• Whenever you face a setback, try to

consider the positive aspects in any

situation or challenge.

Overcoming the feeling of failureStrategy 05 – Don’t let a failure break you

• Almost every successful

professional has overcome a

misstep of some sort.

• So, when you experience your own

career slipup, it’s helpful to speak

with someone who can share some

wisdom on how he or she faced a

setback and emerged stronger on

the other side.

Overcoming the feeling of failureStrategy 06 – Learn from those who faced it

• Accepting your failure doesn’t

mean being proud of it or even

admitting to yourself that you

lost and should give up.

• True acceptance is

understanding that you need to

figure a way to overcome it,

applying a positive and

constructive strategy.

Overcoming the feeling of failureStrategy 07 – Acceptance is key
