The simple way to deal with data protection. The business value of data has grown immensely, and so too, has the quantity of data. Traditional storage methods simply cannot keep up—in capacity, management simplicity, disaster recovery capabilities, and compliance.

Faced with the importance of managing and protecting growing volumes of data, organizations are demanding solutions that deliver scale, performance, and agility—all while reducing storage costs.

Today’s infrastructure requires data protection to span all platforms, from virtual to physical to cloud. Protection must be standardized across physical and virtual environments, disparate operating systems, and critical applications from data center to remote sites. Only with this level of versatility can organizations fill their needs for backup, and ultimately, avoid running into issues that could impact their ability to recover or reuse their valuable data.

The combination of Micro Focus® software and HPE hardware provides an ideal data protection solution. Together, Micro Focus Data Protector and HPE StoreOnce bring broad compatibility, unique value‑added integrations, and support for a wide variety of mission‑critical applications. An enterprise‑grade data recovery solution, Micro Focus Data Protector has a rich history of supporting a wide variety of mission‑critical application environments, and HPE StoreOnce is one of the industry’s most advanced deduplication engines in the market today.

Micro Focus Data Protector was once HPE software, and because of that shared history, it works seamlessly with HPE StoreOnce, HPE Cloud Bank Storage, and other HPE Storage platforms. In short, this partnership delivers the scale, performance, agility, and cost‑efficiency necessary to protect today’s hybrid cloud environments.

Streamline backup across hybrid cloud environmentsHybrid cloud environments help increase efficiency and lower costs; however, they can end up delivering the opposite when it comes to backing up and restoring critical data. That is unless adjustments are made to the IT infrastructure.

Legacy backup methods are ineffective at meeting backup service‑level agreements (SLAs) for highly distributed and dynamic workloads. Organizations must use a smarter, more efficient backup method—one that can protect at scale an ever‑growing quantity of valuable and diverse data and provide a higher level of business resiliency.

Additionally, many organizations use multiple backup applications that are each designed to work with a specific storage implementation. This process then creates storage silos that cause challenges with recovery SLAs and increase management headaches. When backup software is not integrated with the organization’s underlying storage infrastructure, administrators are forced to write custom scripts to automate backup and recovery tasks and spend more time recovering applications.

Data Protector and HPE StoreOnce use the same deduplication technology, which allows for federated deduplication. This means administrators can configure deduplication on the application server, media server, or backup target. Once the data is deduplicated, it is seamlessly moved across the backup stack without rehydration. Data can be stored on deduplication stores created on HPE StoreOnce appliances and on generic backup appliances, which enables remote sites to keep local copies of the backup for faster restores, while sending a copy to central or disaster recovery site.

Zero downtime backup (ZDB) integration orchestrates the creation and protection of space‑efficient, application‑aware snapshots on HPE storage arrays. Administrators can easily configure the number of snapshots kept on each array. Since ZDB does not use the primary server’s resources to backup data, the impact of backup on application performance is minimized.

• Dedupe where data is created

• Reduce the need for extra hardware at ROBO sites

• Reduce network bandwidth consumption

• Offload application server from dedupe processing

• Higher total target appliance throughput

• Efficient utilization of backup infrastructure

• Software‑only implementation can utilize generic disk storage

• Purpose‑built appliance optimized for backup data

• Simplest implementation—no operational changes

Disaster recovery is faster. Administrators can use the instant recovery (IR) feature to recover application snapshots created through ZDB and stored on an array. Additionally, Automated Replication Synchronization eliminates the manual steps required to set a standby Data Protector Cell Manager, which speeds up the recovery process and allows data to be replicated from the remote HPE StoreOnce device to another backup target.

Take even greater control over backup dataWith an integrated environment, administrators can easily monitor, analyze, and report on backups. The HPE Recovery Manager Central provides converged snapshots, replication, and backup capability by integrating HPE 3PAR StoreServ all‑flash arrays with HPE StoreOnce. Data Protector then centralizes management and makes it possible to send backups to tape, disk, or cloud.

Improving resource utilization is possible with the HPE StoreOnce Federated Catalyst feature. Administrators can pool the capacities of multiple storage nodes, scale accordingly by adding more nodes or capacity, and ultimately extend global backup capacity—without increasing management time.

Enable quick and reliable backup and recovery in the cloudCloud solutions provide organizations with flexible and low‑cost data storage. While storing data off‑premise is critical to any disaster recovery plan, there are limitations to the ability to back up and recover this data. Data Protector addresses these limitations, making it simple to use cloud storage as part of a single backup and recovery strategy.

Data Protector features native integration with Amazon Web Services S3, Microsoft® Azure, Scality, and Ceph cloud solutions. Through first‑to‑market integration with HPE StoreOnce Cloud Bank, Data Protector enables administrators to seamless transfer data between on‑premises data sets and these cloud targets without the need for a gateway.

As is the case with on‑premises storage, the fact that Data Protector and HPE StoreOnce use the same deduplication engine means deduplication can occur at the application server, on the media server, or at the target backup appliance. No data rehydration is required, and since all metadata is transferred to the cloud target, restores can occur even if the HPE StoreOnce device is replaced.

Give mission-critical applications a safety netEnterprises rely on multiple applications for day‑to‑day operations. Some of these are more mission‑critical than others, but each require protection that’s reflective of their importance. Relying on traditional backup software—one that does not use dedicated application integration agents—is not enough to ensure data consistency or support for applications running in high‑availability mode.

Some organizations may try to address application backup and recovery by implementing multiple backup solutions, but that introduces infrastructure integration problems, makes managing backups much harder, and makes it more difficult to diagnose problems.

Data Protector provides the intelligent, flexible, and scalable backup and recovery framework that overcomes these challenges. It looks beyond data recovery and incorporates application awareness, storage integration, and operational analytics to deliver a better way to protect applications.

Consistent application recoveryBusiness application integrations allow Data Protector to extend server backup, automate point‑in‑time recovery, and deliver granular restores to application owners. Data Protector is designed to provide application‑aware backup and recovery for critical applications, including Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Server, SAP HANA®, IBM Db2, and MySQL. It does this by using backup APIs or file system agents for integrating with Windows®, Linux®, and UNIX®.

By integrating with VMware vSphere® and Microsoft Hyper‑V, Data Protector eliminates the need for separate solutions to protect mission‑critical applications in virtual environments.

Integration with HPE StoreOnce enables Data Protector to speed up backup and enable instant recovery. Its federated deduplication capability makes it easier to replicate backups across the network and transfer data in a deduplicated state. This enables optimal capacity utilization and reduces bandwidth consumption.

Additional safeguards for mission-critical applications• Granular Recovery Extensions provide the option to search for and recover individual items.

• Enhanced Automated Disaster Recovery, or Bare‑Metal Recovery, allows organizations to quickly recover an entire system in the event of a catastrophic failure.

• Predictive analytics provide insight and analysis into the backup process, so administrators can determine whether backups are meeting SLAs and how to fix problems.

Did you know?• Because application files (a.k.a. open files) are frequently updated and accessed, the backup process

must coordinate with the application before data can be backed up.

• All application files must be consistently captured because failure to do so can lead to backup data corruption and restore inconsistencies.

• Each application has a unique architecture and method for reading and writing data files, which means each backup and restore process should be unique.

Give mission-critical applications a safety net.

LicensingThese Data Protector solutions allow customers to select the license that best matches their consumption model. Through the socket‑based license of Data Protector Express, customers receive a predictable pricing without a need for monitoring their virtualized workload. As their needs expand and an upgrade to the Premium edition is required, customers can easily switch to capacity‑based consumption for mixed physical and virtual environments.

Capacity‑based licensing (available on Data Protector Premium) is based on the volume of primary data protected by Data Protector. Capacity is measured in front‑end terabytes, which is defined as the aggregate amount of source data backed up from all systems.

For existing Data Protector customers who are not yet on the simplified socket or capacity licensing scheme it would be worth a discussion with your representative as some substantial cost savings may be possible, as well as getting access to the full capabilities of the new features and integrations.

Enable an adaptive backup and recovery environmentBy standardizing data protection across locations, applications, formats, operating systems, and hypervisors, Data Protector provides the assurance enterprises need to meet operational and business goals. Plus, integrations with HPE StoreOnce systems not only enable customers to better utilize their IT infrastructure, but they also provide the capabilities necessary to protect the enterprise from the core to the edge.
