changing in your old neighborhood you ought to lakc a look at TcAyo, In the fours years since 1 uas here last, the face of Uiis capital has been aKered radically, and you arc •entitled to your OM h opinions as to whether it^s been for beUer or worse. ^

Tokyo ts still in a freniy of building for the Olympira. a project that has been adopted nationally as a matter of honor and pride. Streets are still being tom up. overhead tiightt-ayK an.' nL-aiiiig construction, the monorail is taking Shape. The Olympics have been a etinvenient, device for bring-‘ Ing the city up (o 20th Century standards.

But it will be a long time before Tokyo solves its traf- 1k problems. The city needs aC least a half down Lais An- ^cs type freeways, but the obstaclc-s in the waya>f building them arc nothing short of mdnnmental.

NISEI — Back in the ‘IhirUes a small numlwr of Nisei came to Japan from the United States in search of the opportunity that seemed to elude them at home. In their native America a deep economic depression and firmly seated prqndi^ combined to darken their ,futurc.s.

Mo^ of these. Nisei found Japan u-as nol Ihc -land of promise,, either. They encountered difficulty adjusting Ui Japanese living standards, and the demands, and custom^ of the business world were strange. Some, disillusioned.. went ^ome to the slat«. Others were stranded by the war. Still others, determined to make good, made -their peace wiitMbe land and decided here they would live, work and die.

These Nisei, now in or approaching their fifties, are generally no longer the English-speaking flunkies whose fa- dlit^ with the language was virtualh their only asset. They are now holding positions of importance ba^ on their other abilities.

Welly Shibata, who runs things at the English Maini- chi. was talking about these marters over. breakfast the

.other morning and-wondered out ioitd why more Nisei and Sansei newspapermen don't come over'herc to wm-k. He pointed oift. hoH'cver. that unless these persons could read and write Japanc.se. their future in this country would be nererely limited. Without hi-lingual language facility, their position would he no different than that of Caucasians.
