Over 210K in Scholarships Bestowed at
Ewing High School Senior Awards Night Marks-Lake, Tolleris Memorial, Joshua Scott Memorial Awards Highlight Evening
The Ewing High School Senior Awards Night was held on Thursday, June 6th.
At the event, over $210,000 in scholarship funds and grants were awarded to members of the EHS
Class of 2019.
During the event, Ewing High School Departmental Honors were also announced with recognized
students being presented awards from faculty members.
Lehigh University-bound Amelia Baffuto was named EHS Class of 2019 Valedictorian, and Henry
Hutchinson headed to Eastern University, was recognized as Salutatorian.
“I would like to thank the civic and community organizations as well as the businesses and individuals
that step forward and provide scholarships and awards for our exceptional students,” commented
Superintendent Michael Nitti. “Their belief in our mission and support of our schools will help these
outstanding young people continue their fine academic work after they move on upon graduation.”
The presentation of the annual Debbie Marks-Lake Memorial Award/Scholarship was one of the
highlights of the evening and was presented by Kyle Marks, Debbie’s nephew and a current EHS senior
student-athlete himself. Kyle presented the award to his classmate since their kindergarten days
together at Lore School, outstanding EHS scholar-athlete Devon Kueny.

Marks-Lake Scholarship Recipient Devon Kueny and Marks Family Members
Debbie Marks-Lake was a three-sport student-athlete for Ewing High School excelling in soccer,
basketball and softball. Known for her athletic prowess, Marks-Lake earned numerous awards in high
school, highlighted by her selection as a first team All-State player in soccer, The Trentonian "Player of
the Year" for soccer, and many other athletic and scholastic achievements.
One of the finest student-athletes every produced by the Ewing Schools, Marks-Lake sadly passed away
in October of 2015 after a long battle with cancer.
The Debbie Mark-Lake Award/Scholarship, sponsored by her family and the Debbie Marks Lake
Foundation/Debbie’s Dreams, is awarded to a Ewing High School female student-athlete who
demonstrates the same qualities as Debbie with regard to academic achievement, scholarship and
leadership.
Devon Kueny is an outstanding scholar with a GPA of 4.48 and is currently ranked in the top one
percent of her senior class. Kueny is the President of the National Honor Society and earned varsity
letters in three sports: Girls Soccer, Softball and Wrestling. Kueny earned accolades and each sport
and was a state championship qualifier and podium finisher in wresting. She will continue her softball
career at Dickinson College.

Other highlights included the awarding of the Angela Tolleris Memorial Awards to seniors Caleb Stokes
and Symone Summiel by Councilwomen Jennifer Keyes-Maloney, the presentation of the John F. Gusz
Memorial Scholarship to Nadlie Alexis, the award of the Wayne Staub Presidential Scholarship by
representatives of the Ewing Public Education Foundation to Alexa Laflin, The Vincent J. Sciarrotta
Community Service Leadership Scholarship was awarded to Alexander Medwick and the bestowing of
the Lloyd Snyder Memorial Award to talented EHS musician Andrew Ashton.
The College of New Jersey Scholarship Recipients
A touching moment each year is when the Joshua Scott Memorial Award is presented to an EHS 9th
grade student. Joshua Scott was in 9th grade in the Ewing Schools when he sadly passed away. The
award recipient is a freshman student who best embodies the positive traits of Joshua. This year’s
honoree was Thomas Vellenga.
Continuing with accolades for the senior class, several Ewing High School seniors will be continuing
their education at the College of New Jersey in Ewing Township and were recognized for their
outstanding accomplishments at Ewing High School. James Kim, a stellar student-athlete, was awarded
The College of New Jersey EOF Promise Award of $15,000 each year, technology wiz and academic all-
star Sterly Deracy received an $8,000 a year Merit Scholarship for his hard work. Amelie Francois,

Emani Wilson and Ziara Jones-Coston will join their classmates at TCNJ, and were each was awarded
$5,000 Merit-Scholarships to continue their studies of higher education.
To close the ceremony, the “key to Ewing High School” was passed from 2019 Co-Presidents Nadlie
Alexis and Steven Rodriguez too incoming Student Council Co-Presidents Anujin Ariunbold and Nathalia
Davila.
