The ovaries of sexually-mature females secrete 2 different hormones:
1) Estrogen is responsible for the development of the secondary sex characteristics in females: • development of breasts • further development of the uterus and vagina • broadening of the hips • growth of pubic hair• increase in fat tissue• helps to prepare the body for pregnancy • involved in changes if pregnancy occurs
2) Progesterone helps prepare the lining of the uterus to receive the egg if it becomes fertilized by a sperm.

Testosterone is made in the testes and is the main male sex hormone.
Testosterone is responsible for the development of the secondary sex characteristics in men:• growth of a beard• growth of pubic hair• enlargement of the penis• deepening of the voice• increased musculature• broadening of the shoulders
Testosterone is also essential for the production of sperm.
