Coupling  Solu+on  for  Pumping  Applica+on

Page 16: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Background

Customer  was  experiencing  intermit  coupling  failures  on  a  pumping  system.    The  applica9on  sizing  was  confirmed  to  be  correct  for  the  size  of  electric  motor  HP  &  speed  and  equipment  service  factor.

Page 17: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Inves+ga+on

The  analysis  of  the  coupling  pointed  to  an  overload  type  failure  as  the  disc  pack  fasteners  experienced  severe  deforma9on  &  fracturing.

Page 18: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Inves+ga+on

Based  on  the  coupling  root  cause  analysis,  the  equipment  was  instrumented  to  measure  torque  and  speed  at  the  coupling  interface.    It  was  found  that  the  system  was  experiencing  a  torque  condi9on  during  startup  that  created  a  transient  load  that  exceeded  the  couplings  peak  torque  ra9ng.    Over  a  series  of  start-‐ups,  this  created  a  low  cycle  fa9gue  type  overload  failure  on  the  coupling.

Page 19: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Solu+on

The  coupling  was  sized  with  the  new  torque  level  requirements  (as  measured).    While  the  resul9ng  coupling  selec9on  was  mul9ple  sizes  larger  than  the  original,  the  larger  size  was  required  as  the  number  of  startup  cycles  the  coupling  would  experience  over  its  service  life  necessitated  the  coupling  have  the  ability  to  withstand  a  high  number  of  startup  cycles.

High Temperature Coupling Application

Page 34: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Introduction •  Medical instrumentation manufacturer

had tried many standard couplings for use in a pharmaceutical research instrument, none of them being successful.

•  The company contacted Ruland Manufacturing because of our expertise and wide variety of product.

Ruland flexible couplings

Page 35: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Application Specifics •  Day to day requirement for the coupling

was not unusual or difficult to address.

•  Large parallel misalignment of the shafts needed to be accounted for, the speed was low, zero-backlash with a high level of accuracy was required.

Representation of parallel misalignment

Page 36: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Problem •  Periodic sterilization of the instrument in an

autoclave was required.

•  The high temperature was destroying any standard coupling design that met the mechanical operational requirements.

•  Standard coupling designs that could survive the high temperature did not have the amount of parallel misalignment needed for the application.

High temperature is an issue

Page 37: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Coupling Considerations •  A basic coupling design must be chosen as a

starting point for a custom solution.

•  Basic oldham design had the large parallel misalignment capabilities, as well as the required accuracy.

•  Standard oldham discs could not survive the temperature in the autoclave requiring us to look beyond our standard materials.

Oldham couplings accommodate high parallel misalignment and accuracy

Page 38: Outside-of-the-box solutions for coupling applications

Material Selection •  Design engineers needed to find a suitable high

temperature material for the custom disc that could meet the required performance characteristics.

•  Manufacturing had to find a way to machine this material with a high level of precision to maintain zero-backlash operation.

•  The result was a custom disc made from PEEK.

•  This satisfied the mechanical and temperature requirements and has solved the customer’s issue.
