HOW WE SEE IT Outreach youth work is a new possibility to reach out to the youth. It’s really hard to do have to be alert about different trendings with the

youth. Going where the kids are: shopping centers, railway stations, metro

stations etc. Get to know the youth in a place that’s ”no ones”. Earning their trust trust and respect themthey will respect you. REMEMBER TO BE PATIENCE. Giving guidance showing the child where s/he could get help, but not

forcing. Showing to the youth that they are welcome. Making rules for their own good Might not have rules at home. Helping them to have a change in a better life teaching how to apply for

a job etc.

Challenges: Money Development of cooperation in the organization or between

organizations. The need to be on top of your game/focus because of the limited

resources Globally fast-paced society(Reactive/preventative technique) Cooperation with the police in extreme cases Finnish organizations play too safe. Shame, disappointment at unfinished projects or unfulfilled goals

” Success stories, they take time but they do happen”, Wentzel.C

Purpose of Outreach youthwork To help young people under the age of 29 who are outside of education, unemployed,

have limited options and those who are at risk of social exclusion.  To help those who need support to reach public sector services and keep them

committed.  To try and find those youngsters who, for example, haven’t received help from the

social services system. Sometimes they have been in the system for many years but they haven’t found the best way to manage their life.

Trying to dig deeper into young people’s problems and better understand how to help them.

Reach young people in different areas for example cafeterias, schools, young people’s homes and also different kinds of offices such as the employment office, social welfare office and mental healthcare offices.

Focus on working with young people aged between 13 and 29. Often these young people have a variety of problems; they can range from social problems, economic problems, mental health problems, life-management problems and substance abuse.

Depending on the needs of the clients the services can be long or short term. All of the work is confidential and voluntary for young people. Every young person deserves the same chance as everybody else in life.
