Since 1979, Outreach International has been working with the world's most marginalized people to create solutions to help end world poverty. We are currently working in 10 impoverished countries, reaching hundreds of thousands with our mission to create permanent change. We call this long-term change "Sustainable Good." At Outreach International, we believe giving a gift without educating a community to use it, repair it or cultivate it, is no gift at all; it's a quick fix to a problem that will continually resurface. And we don't want to create short-term solutions for world poverty—we want to change it forever. Through Outreach International's Participatory Human Development Process (PHDP), impoverished people around the world voice their own hopes and concerns for their families and communities. We believe in inspiring confidence by empowering communities to work together toward a greater solution. Their choices of village-specific projects in these six categories create a locally-driven, holistic approach.

Supporting children's schooling programs around the world and giving children the opportunity to have better access to those programs, we promote the importance of education in all Outreach communities.

Health issues include a wide spectrum of projects. In many impoverished communities, latrines are being built to improve sanitation. Additionally, programs have been developed in local area clinics to treat and prevent diseases.

Giving families the opportunity to grow nutritious vegetables, children grow up stronger with more opportunities for education. Outreach has developed superfood feeding programs and greenhouse gardens.

Helping communities obtain better access to clean drinking water by building water pumps and wells, we are fighting disease and giving communities more time to generate income activities. In more advanced programs, irrigation systems are put in place to help harvests grow during the lean months.

In communities lacking economic opportunities, raising farm animals, such as pigs, chickens, goats and buffalo, allows impoverished villages the chance to feed their families and also turn a profit with surplus milk and fertilizer.

In Malawi and Bolivia, harvests decrease dramatically during the lean season. Because deforestation damages impoverished communities who rely on the forest for food and income, Outreach villages have planted thousands of trees to create a better environment for growth.

"During my time as a facilitator, I don't expect that poverty will be totally abolished. But I want the people to have the motivation to continuously fight for its eradication as they journey through their lives," said Krizza Velasquez, a community leader at Outreach International for seven years.

Growing up in the Philippines, in a life of poverty herself, Krizza feels a special connection to the people she's working with. "I witnessed my parent's sacrifices, heartaches and guilt when they were not able to provide for all our needs when I was young. And just as I dreamt of having a better life, I want a better life for these communities, too," she said.

Right now, Krizza's biggest concern is that her communities are experiencing poor sanitation as well as a lack of food and a lack of income-generating activities. Watching the communities grow and work together, she's seen them initiate multiple

projects; so with the right resources, she knows it's only a matter of time before they overcome these obstacles, too.

Also a native Filipino, Emily Garubo has dedicated 22 years of her life to serving impoverished communities in her country. And because more than 23 million people in the Philippines are living below the poverty line, both Emily and Krizza have prepared to do everything within their means to improve conditions.

Working for Outreach for nearly 30 years combined, Emily and Krizza have been through extreme trials and tribulations as well as emotional and triumphant victories. They are knowledgeable and experienced in their fields, to say the least; but things haven't always been so easy.

be daunting. "Gaining their trust is a difficult part of the process," said Krizza.

But that's not the only challenge. "You have to go outside of your comfort zone," she continued. "Sleeping in beds made of bamboo is difficult when you're used to a comfortable bed at home. And I had to take baths in an irrigation canal."

"And, often, you have to get used to an entirely different language," Emily added, pointing out the many regional dialects.

As Emily and Krizza became acclimated in their communities and progressed as facilitators, they began feeling a strong sense of pride for their communities' accomplishments.

As part of the Outreach process, community members are empowered, developing a strong sense of community as well as the realization that they can achieve more than they ever thought possible. Giving them the freedom to set their own goals as a community, Outreach encourages them to voice their concerns and aspirations for their villages.

Emily and Krizza agreed that, as community facilitators, the greatest sense of accomplishment comes when community members feel that sense of accomplishment themselves. "When they say, 'It's my victory,' then I am proud," said Emily.

Years ago, Krizza's sister came to visit her in an Outreach community. And for Krizza, that was a peak moment in her career. "She saw me conducting a meeting, and she said, 'I'm so proud that you're my sister. I want to be like you someday.'"

Emily and Krizza's personal experiences compare with people living in the United States? Things are definitely different, both women agree.

The first thing Krizza noticed is the difference between Filipino and American levels of confidence—especially because she's been working to build confidence in Outreach communities in the Philippines.

"As communities work together, accessing resources and implementing community projects, I want the people to realize their self-worth and regain their confidence and dignity," she said. "Filipinos are resilient. Our country is

along the ring of fire—the hotspot for disasters and home of copious amounts of poverty. But amidst that, Filipinos can still smile and be hopeful. It's one of the Filipino traits I am most proud of."

Emily added, "When my role as a leader shifts to the community members themselves—that's when I know I've done my job."

In 2012, Outreach International worked with nine communities in the Philippines, coordinating 86 total community projects, and reaching a total of 4,640 people.

Last year, in the town of Naviundu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), more than 1,000 people were able to use clean tap water due to Outreach International's work with community members. But the humble, hard-working village of Naviundu wasn't the only community to reach water improvements—in 2012, Outreach worked in six communities in DR Congo alone.

In a country where nearly 51 million people—or 75 percent of the population—lack access to safe drinking water, community priorities have led to improved boreholes, installation of safe water pumps and wells, and a significantly reduced amount of time dedicated to fetching water.

In Africa, women and children spend a collective 40 billion hours every year gathering water. This time-consuming routine leaves little time for children’s education or income-earning activities. But because Outreach has helped increase water sources in DR Congo communities, children are spending less time searching for water and more time in school.

Of the 800 million people living without clean water in the world, 345 million live in Africa. And because of this startling statistic, Outreach has made it a priority to serve three countries in Africa, helping each access clean water and improve sanitation.

In Kalebuka, DR Congo, 85 families are now experiencing running water flowing directly to their houses, benefiting more than 400 people.

And, Outreach water projects are not just on the African continent.

Schools in Haiti have constructed rainwater catchment systems to maximize

water sources. And in Guatemala, villages have utilized filters to reduce water-related illness. And with the help of community groups, Outreach is minimizing the amount of time it takes to fetch water in Bolivia.

As a Bolivian native, Rufina spent countless hours every week finding water for her children. In an effort to save time and energy for all women of the community, village members worked diligently to build a water source nearby. "It used to take me two hours to go down the hill to fetch water. Thanks to improvements, I now have a water system near my house," said Rufina.

riverbanks, Outreach believes health education and sanitation are tremendously important in the fight for clean water. For example, it is startling that there are now more mobile phones in the developing world than toilets.

Focusing on improving sanitation in Haiti, the Philippines, Zambia, Guatemala and DR Congo, communities have constructed latrines, while children around the world are learning the importance of hand washing—especially before eating.

As the essential element of life, water is one of the most valuable resources Outreach can offer its communities. More than 3.4 million people died from water-related diseases last year, killing more people than HIV, malaria and war-related deaths combined. And more than 90 percent of those deaths are children younger than five years old.

But with increased awareness and support, these staggering numbers can be enormously reduced. These vulnerable men, women and children reach new grounds everyday you partner with Outreach.
