The Rectory, The Street, Hempnall, Norwich, NR15 2AD Dear Friends, Congratulations to the people of Topcroft. They have received a ‘commended’ certificate from the Norwich Diocese Welcoming Churches Committee, because of the way visitors are welcomed to that church.

If you have not been there recently it’s worth a look. Not only has the kitchen extension been completed for a few months now, but a new path has been laid, just in time for the Topcroft Open Gardens. Well done to you all. Why not pop in or come and attend one of our services over the summer?

Congratulations to the ‘Let’s Walk Again’ team. The Hempnall Group has launched another book of walks around the area. It’s beautifully illustrated with good information of where to go. Much time and thought has gone into this. Copies are available in the churches and various outlets at £2.00 each. Why not buy one and explore the beautiful South Norfolk countryside.

Jesus, in the bible, often talked in parables, stories that his listeners understood. In one parable he talks about the smallest seed, a mustard seed, growing into a large bush where birds nested and people sheltered from the sun. From small beginnings great things can grow, and make a difference. With a vision for justice and righteousness, with a touch of God’s grace and perseverance and His love we can make a difference in our neighbourhoods and families.

Finally, summer holidays are almost upon us. An opportunity to relax a little, explore new areas, do different things with family and friends. Wherever you go whatever you do, have a wonderful summer! With love,

SHELTON WITH HARDWICK

COMMUNITY SCHOOL AND HEMPNALL PRIMARY SCHOOL FEDERATION We have had an amazing month at both our

schools. Shelton hosted our Proms in the Wood musical concert where we had all our children take part in an afternoon concert outdoors. Every class in both schools performed a song from a musical. We also had spine-tingling performances from our children who have vocal tuition which will live long in the memory – Barney, Charlotte, Erin, Elizabeth, Stephanie and Abigail you were awesome! We also enjoyed violinists from both schools, guitarists from Shelton, percussionists from Hempnall and brilliant performances on the piano from many of our pupils. Some children created their own compositions which was wonderful to hear. To cap it off we had music teachers from the Norfolk Music Hub performing in their band and the totally awesome Long Stratton High School choir lead by Lucy Ames and our own fabulous Hempnall Community Choir! As well as the music, we have had our first Formula Goblin races of the year at Scottow. This when our children in Year 5 and 6 build and drive an electronically powered cart against other schools. The crews were brave and brilliant in their racing at Scottow. To round off the half way point in June, Year 3 and 4 children had their residential trip to the Horstead Centre this week. We had an awesome time – canoeing, climbing, camp cooking, rafting, caving and having wonderful fun in the sun! We are all tired out and staff and children alike are tired but full of pride for all the wonderful things our children have achieved this week! Next week it is the turn of the Year 5 and 6 children are going down to Hindleap Warren in Sussex for their residential trip so wish us luck! We are hosting an exhibition afternoon in each school to showcase the fantastic work that the children have done. Please come along and have a look at their work and take a look around the schools on the following dates:

Hempnall Primary School - Thursday 12 July, 3.00–5.30pm

Shelton with Hardwick Community School – Thursday 19 July, 3.00-4.30pm

Do follow us on Twitter if you’d like to see all the photos of these amazing

adventures – our children never have a dull moment at Shelton with

Hardwick Community School or Hempnall Primary School. The Twitter

address is @SHHSFederation. Laura Jestico, Executive Headteacher

AFTERNOON GARDEN PARTY Stalls and Games – July 21st at 2pm at St Andrews Church, Bedingham, Conservation Area. Many years ago a scheme to turn part of our churchyard over to a conservation area by Mrs Ruth Hadnam was started. You may not be aware that St Andrews churchyard now has a large area dedicated to Conservation wildlife. Following a study and subsequent recent visit from Norfolk

Wildlife Trust to survey and discuss this, we were informed that this was a brilliant example which they would highly recommend a visit to. As a result, the PCC have made a walk and intend to install a picnic area allowing this wonderful wildflower and wildlife area to be enjoyed by all. We would love to share this experience with anyone who is interested in coming to have a look and take a leisurely walk along the path through the areas of conservation. We will be having our recommended cut of the area by the Norfolk Probation Service at the

Thank you TOPCROFT OPEN GARDENS Topcroft PCC wishes to record sincere thanks to the 12 gardeners who kindly opened their gardens for the Open Garden event. Many hours were devoted over the weeks planting and weeding for all our visitors to enjoy the fruits of their hard work. Thanks must also go to all who donated food and helped in the refreshment marquee and to Patrick and Michael who organised the bus route on both days. Lastly and as important many thanks to all who visited the gardens to help us raise a total of £4300. ADELAIDA’S OPERATION Thank you to all in Hempnall and surrounding villages who gave generously towards expenses needed to operate on Adelaida (see note in May’s magazine). She is a health care worker in Tanzania, but needs new hips, as hers have been damaged by Sickle Cell Disease. The team at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital will perform the operation in their spare time and all her needs will be privately funded. Altogether we raised £265 in cash plus 3 generous cheques. Thank you so much. I have asked the surgeon to write and tell us how she got on in her operation and her stay here. Maggie Kingston ELY RETREAT My gratitude to Michael and Liz and to all of you for making my stay so easy and possible with your care and consideration. A great stay and reunion with old companions. Jill Tyler ROGER ANDREWS AND CLARE would like to thank so many of you for your kind donations in memory of Florence on what would have been her 80th Birthday. The tea party held in her memory raised the amazing amount of £503.00 which has been sent to The Big C, to support others who sadly find themselves in the position we were in. The afternoon was so special to us and we know she would have loved it, seeing all her friends and family together sharing memories and making new ones. CHRISTIAN AID WEEK Thank you all who contributed and helped with collecting the envelopes. So far we have raised £1819. If you still have an uncollected envelope please leave it at The Rectory, The Street, Hempnall or phone 499405 and someone will collect it. Bless you.

DITCHINGHAM HALL OPEN GARDENS 17th JUNE The weather remained fine, the gardens looked their best, plenty of tea and cake consumed, plants, pots, ice cream and tickets bought, and as a result a magnificent sum of just over £4000 was raised for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. A very special thank you to all who helped on the day, you know who you are and we are deeply grateful; people who ran stalls; those who loaned equipment, baked cakes, donated items for the tombola or raffle or came to support the event. Thank you all for making it such a success. Annabel, Judith and Susanna. ELY IN EARLY SUMMER Eighteen people from the Group and beyond spent a few happy days in Ely in May. There was plenty to do as we were staying at Bishop Woodford House within five minutes of the beautiful cathedral. There were walks by the river and a river trip by boat, the Stained Glass Museum, Oliver Cromwell House, Wicken Fen Nature Reserve and of course the cathedral itself, including Choral Evensong. There was also time to enjoy each other’s company, some quiet moments and the kindly hospitality of the Centre. Thank you Liz and Michael for your usual meticulous organization.

HEMPNALL VILLAGE HALL - COMPUTER TUTOR REQUIRED We are urgently looking for a computer IT tutor to help and instruct a group of friendly enthusiasts of varying abilities, on Tuesday afternoons between 3pm & 5pm (or another day or time to be agreed). With the good weather the children are able to enjoy outdoor learning. They will be visiting the Norfolk Show this term, going to see the Go, Go Hares in Norwich as we have decorated one as a school and enjoying Sports Day. Every summer we have a Summer Fete and this year we will be on Saturday 23rd June 12-2pm. We do hope you will be able to come along and join us.

The school has a range of clubs running this term. The children can enjoy:- karate, multi-sport, archery, lego and choir. We are continuing with the project we started last summer with

Adnams, growing our own fruit and vegetables and selling them to their restaurants. With the help of two parents, the KS 2 children go out on a Friday morning to plant, weed and harvest crops. Our musicians have been doing various music grades, and later in the term we will be having an evening where they will be able to share their skills. We have a wonderful teacher who gives our children the opportunity of doing recorders, clarinet, and piano. We also have a small choir and our Key Stage 2 musical production this year will be putting on Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Coat. The school is always looking for helpers in school. We currently have two vacancies for Midday Supervisors to help at lunch time. We would also be interested in anyone who would like to come in and volunteer in the school. If you are interested in either of these, please contact the school.

CHURCH GROUP WALK Following on from a very successful walk at Caister St Edmund which took in part of Boudicca's Way, a group of some 20 walkers (age range few months to a few decades) met on the green at Pulham Market on Sunday 10th June to tackle another stretch of Boudicca's Way. The walk was predominately along well used and maintained footpaths in attractive countryside, through woodland, crossing streams, around and across fields, There was very little road to negotiate and this was quiet country lanes. The Hereford cattle passed en route were much admired by all. The sun shone and conversation flowed. The walk brought

everyone back to Pulham Market for a well-earned tea and cake.
