Many well-designed handwriting programs build on

movement patterns to teach letter formation, alignment and spatial relationships to develop legibility. Most of these programs will work – IF the student has motivation to keep practicing these repetitive movements. Mastering penmanship involves the kind of repetitive practice that comes from intrinsic motivation. Without an internal drive to practice a skill individuals rarely persevere long enough to succeed. The Handwriting Success program explains and utilizes an approach that rewards practice and the pathway to success with research-based tips from motivational and positive psychology. Understanding the neuro-motor, cognitive, and social-relational skills underlying development of handwriting enables you to direct your efforts where they will produce the best success. You will leave the day loaded with activities that provide intrinsic motivation for persevering with repetitive skills practice and forms for creating a motivational Handwriting Warriors & Princesses program. This seminar not only gives you the tools needed to identify neuro-behavioral skills that directly impact handwriting, it will also teach you how to design a program that motivates students to persevere with this fundamental academic skill.

Creating a Motivational Program

Susan L. Roberts, MDiv, OTR/L, has more than 25 years of experience in “results oriented” therapy in schools. She approaches children’s challenges with handwriting from an integrative perspective that begins with the primary occupation of childhood: play. From this perspective she addresses cognitive, sensory-motor, social connection and creative aspects of learning penmanship so that children feel eager to learn and proud of their accomplishments. Susan has pursued interests in how sensory

integration impacts indigenous healing traditions since her graduate studies at Harvard University.

Susan earned a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from Boston University and a Masters in Divinity from Harvard University. Susan added nutrition to her repertoire through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York City, and became a member of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners.

Ms. Roberts has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the Occupational Therapy Departments of Eastern Kentucky University and the New York Institute of Technology. She was named Arizona Occupational Therapy Association’s Occupational Therapist of the Year in 1993.

Susan Roberts has written three books: Biomechanics: Problem Solving for Functional Activity; Kinesiology: Movement in the Context of Activity; and My Kid Eats Everything: A Journey from Picky to Adventurous Eating.
