Designing the Dream Outdoor Kitchen

The first step is developing a clear idea of what your client wants in their outdoor kitchen by asking this fundamental question:

• How do you envision using your outdoor kitchen?

Let your client express their vision and go from there!

Page 9: Outdoor Kitchen 101...Outdoor Kitchen 101 Casey Harvey Ray Murray Inc. Attendees will learn the tips and tricks needed to design a functional and memorable outdoor kitchen tailored

8

How do you envision using your Outdoor Kitchen?• Are you planning on using your outdoor kitchen year round,

several days a week or just occasionally?

• Are you looking just for a spot to cook outside or also a place to eat, drink, and socialize?

• What do you envision cooking? Burgers and dogs, steaks or something more adventurous like smoked meats and fish, pizzas, steamed crabs, slow roasted pork, paella, etc.?

• Do you plan on doing most of your food preparation inside or out?

• How about drinks and cocktails?

Good Design Elements• Keep in mind the scale and style of the home and

property

• Plan the kitchen to minimize the impact of noise, light, and smoke on the neighbors as well as designing for privacy

• Segment into functional zones:

• Hot: Cooking equipment and work area

• Cold: Fridge, cooler, keggerator

• Wet: Sink, bar

• Dry: Dining and entertaining area

Good Design Elements• Audition a spot in the yard.

Bring out chairs and see how it feels to transport food and beverages there.

• Cook out in that location for a few nights so you can get an idea of the prevailing wind and how smoke will travel in relation to the seating and entertaining area.

Common Design PitfallsLack of Functional Zones or Work Areas

•When designing the outdoor kitchen, you should

remember that you will need the same types of

functional zones or work areas as in an indoor kitchen.

Lack of Counter Space and Landing Zones

• One of the most common mistakes associated with

outdoor kitchen design is a lack of counter space or

poor landing zone design. • 3‐4’ of heatproof countertop space around grill.• 2‐3’ on either side of sink

Common Design PitfallsLack of Cabinet Space

• You should make sure that you design and plan enough

cabinet space so that you will have adequate room to store

needed utensils, pots and pans that will be used. Also, you

should consider that you may need space for charcoal,

propane tanks and wood chips, etc.

Insufficient Lighting

• Lighting your outdoor kitchen can prove to be a challenge. Therefore, youʹll need to make sure that you plan for the

installation of sufficient task lighting that will allow your

outdoor kitchen to be used at night.

Common Design PitfallsWater Management

• Invest in weather tight storage

• Install Drip Groove in countertop

Installation tipsRead manufacturer’s instructions before design and before installation

• Clearances to combustible materials

• Approved framing and finishing methods and materials

• Any required support or bracing

• Clearances to rear wall for opening of hood and heat management

• Gas requirements

• Ventilation requirements

• Other important installation and service considerations

Installation tipsBeware of masonry dust & debris created by cutting stone or mixing cement, muriatic / hydrochloric acid or other corrosive cleaning solutions.

Can create a corrosive condition that can cause even 304 type stainless steel to quickly develop surface oxidation, corrosion and rust.

This is NOT defective metal and is NOT covered by warranties

Most Common Installation Problems• #1 ‐ Undersized gas line for appliance demand

• Cabinet/Island not ventilated

• Wrong gas type: Natural Gas or LPG  (Propane)

• Not calculating the countertop or veneer thickness when making cutouts for appliances

• Placing back of grill too close to wall or facing prevailing wind, creating overheating conditions

• No vent hoods under overhead combustibles

• No drain‐out access for wintertime water lines

• No accessible gas line shut off valve

• Framing in combustible materials

Sales & Marketing StrategyThe Four “F”’s of outdoor kitchen sales. Make sure all of your sales & marketing efforts prominently feature the four key elements of the outdoor kitchen lifestyle:

Food – Have the cookbooks, recipes & techniques available to literally make your clients hungry

Family – The outdoor kitchen brings families together from everyday moments to those special events

Friends – Entertaining is one of the major factors behind the decision to invest in an outdoor kitchen

Marketing ideasFocused & Targeted Marketing ideas:

Targeted marketing based on affluent neighborhoods

New Homeowner Targeted Marketing

“Neighbor select” direct mail program where you send out mailers to the neighbors of recent installations, i.e., “Have you seen your neighbor’s new backyard oasis?” Keeping up with the Joneses, etc...

Cross market with other businesses that cater to affluent consumers (luxury car dealerships, jewelry retailers, etc.)

Referral programs

Own the Backyard! Consumers are looking for these high quality products to go along with the rest of their project.

Affluent consumers do not want or have the time to coordinate all of the different components of the project

Who better to provide them than you, the outdoor experts?

1. Add profits to your business

2. Differentiate yourself from your competition by offering a complete solution

3. Happier clients by offering higher quality products that will provide years of enjoyment
