As autumn peaks so does the kayaking season, with

full rivers and stunning wooded gorges. There are miles of breathtaking rivers to canoe near Fort William in Scotland, and the Lower Falls in Glen Nevis is one of the top destinations, according to Callum Anderson (pictured right). “It’s magic, and the Lower Falls are not particularly hard to canoe,” he says, “but the river higher up is a bit more adrenaline-filled.” Not that it’s a stream for complete novices – about a grade five, says Anderson (six is highest).

“There’s not a lot of skill involved in going over falls – it’s easy to drop!” he adds. “You just need to get your line right. I’ve been throwing beginners over these falls, but you do need to know what you’re doing.”Once hooked, kayaking is an

addictive activity. “It’s a great adventure and a cracking way to see the countryside. And when you’re in the rapids they seem a lot bigger.”

conditions. “Many local clubs will have

instruction,” says Callum Anderson,
