Why Celebrate a 160th Anniversary?

We’ve made big plans to celebrate with the city our 160th anniversary on Saturday afternoon, September 12, from 2-6 pm. Why is this so important? Is it worth all this effort?

Churches grow in several ways, but the most effective way for an established church in an estab-lished neighborhood to grow is by increasing its public visibility. In other words, people need to know us by a positive reputation.

The great thing about our heritage as a church is how we are integrally connected to one of the pri-mary “founding families” of Kansas City. Isaac and Christiana McCoy came into this region before Kansas City was settled. Last Thursday, I happened to be walking from one section of St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza and passed by an inner courtyard for the first time. I looked up and saw this historical plaque prominently displayed: St. Luke’s on the Plaza is the site where McCoy built his family home near Westport, adjacent to the home of his son, John Calvin McCoy, commonly referred to as the “father of Kansas City.” Johnston Lykins, our founder and Isaac’s son-in-law and close partner in ministry, built one of the city’s first mansions downtown when he left missionary work and became a busi-ness leader and the first duly-elected mayor of Kansas City. More than any other Kansas City institution, we are integrally linked to this founding family. And it reminds us, and everyone else, that our heritage is not only long in this city but it is also filled with stories of faithfulness, justice, equity and passion for ministry. This is our story to tell. Please help us as we tell this story on Saturday, September 12!

Is training congregations to engage in conversations on race. Stephen Jones and Paul Sienkiewicz will attend on Saturday, 9/26, 8:30 am – 12:30 pm at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church on Swope Parkway. We’d like to have one more person engaging in this important training.

HOMES FOR OVERNIGHT LODGING OF BACONE COLLEGE STUDENTS We now have housing for 22 college students from Bacone College in Muskogee, OK for our anniversary day on Saturday, September 12. But we need housing for 30, so we need more homes/apartments of our members to step forward and offer spaces for the students to sleep over-night. You would pick up the young people sometime in the evening, host them overnight, serve them breakfast and return them back to our church in time to go on to their next concert – and return home later that day. The commitment is very short – but the need is very real! You will be blessed by getting to know some of these very special students! Bacone has a mixed student body, so some of the students will be Native Americans as well as other backgrounds.

Greenlake Experience, by Donna Fast

Are we having Fun yet?

Would you like to vacation in beautiful new rooms?

These beautiful dishes were a gift from Grace Baptist in thanks for the generous opportunity to enjoy the fellowship and inspiration at Green lake by invitation of First Baptist. We shared a wonderful bounty and had our own banquet every night.

FYI ABWMABWMABWMABWM

We will start our 2015-2016 year off with American Baptist Women Sunday Sept 20. Pastor’s wife Jan Jones will present a message around this years ABWM theme “See...the Beloved Community: Reformative Relationships” (Psalms 34.8, 13:9 and Luke 10:29-37)

We will have an organizational meeting on Sept 17th at 10:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room. We have 4 meetings planned this year. Beginning Saturday Oct. 10. The program will be by Martha Brown on “Reaching out to Japan, through quilts,” in the Fireside Room. On Saturday Dec. 12 the program will be “Reaching out to Tijuana: Deborah House” presented by Dezo talking about her experiences. On Saturday, March 5, at 10:00 a.m., the program is “Reaching out to Nepal.” Niranjan Shrestha will share about his rescue efforts in Nepal this year. Finally Saturday June 4 at 10:00 a.m. is “Women’s Day Out Lunch” at Armour Oaks with a program by Sarah Young.

Circle of Hope meets every 3rd Friday at 10:00 a.m. This year instead of having different programs each month we will study “Women of the Bible.” Please feel free to join us anytime you can. We would love to include you in our fellowship. We are out by noon.

We will continue to support the local food pantry. First Baptist has been the biggest supporter in the past but we have dropped the ball lately. This month will be soap and paper products which can not be bought with food stamps. Let’s be the Best supporter again this year.

Watch for the ABWM cookbook. Coming soon! We will be using the proceeds to fund our Mission projects. - Sue Hansen President.

Fall Update from Kim Brown “House of Love” in Thailand To be honest, the last months have been extremely taxing and I have felt some discouragement, but in His perfect way, the Lord encourages me-and I wanted to share a story that I hope will bless you too. This past week, we had a large group of students from Japan come for a visit. It was not a Christian school, but the leader still asked for some of the House of Love kids to share. One of our girls shared her testimony. "N" came out of an abusive home, and shared with tears in her eyes some of the difficulties, but ended with the powerful statement, "No matter what has happened to me, I am sure that God has a plan for me, and the House of Love is part of that plan. I have value because I am a child of God, and I know I am loved." Thank you for your prayers and financial sup-port of the HOL-it does make a difference!

Congratulations

To DeZo who received one of the 2015 – 2016 Harold O. Long

scholarships from the Great Rivers Region
